Linux is a trademark owned by Linus Torvalds [1]. It is an operating system which is powerful, free and inexpensive to own based on UNIX [1]. It is a POSIX-compliant with versions available to install in cell phones, supercomputers and most computing systems [1]. Linux is an open source program as its source code is available to the general public for use and the right to modify from its original design without any charges [1]. New code will be added to the next version made available with Linux if it is accepted as a universal improvement [1]. The code will continue to exist and developed by the user even if the company fails [1]. Moreover, updates for Linux are available every six months [1]. Nowadays, Linux is in constant development by those contributors most of whom have never met around the world [1].
Linux Torvalds, the founder of Linux, was born on 28th of December, 1969 [2]. He was a graduate student of computer science at the University of Helsinki in Finland [2]. The story took place in 1988’s, Linux had enrolled at the University of Helsinki [2]. He had bought a PC, but wanted to create an operating system which could greatly enhance the limited capabilities of the Intel 80386 microprocessor [2]. He started with MINIX, a Unix-inspired operating system developed by Professor Tanenbaum [2]. However, he was not impressed with the system in general, especially its inability to do terminal emulation which is needed by Linus to connect to the university’s computers [2]. When he was a graduate student, he started to develop the terminal emulation program [2]. Besides that, he was thinking to have the program to be able to do other things with it like saving and transferring files [2]. He announced his achievement on the inte...

I was very interested in computers and technology as a child, both playing games and building fake parts for them. Still in elementary school, I was fascinated by these computing machines, spending hours on end working with DOS to satisfy my curiosity. Around my middle school years, Windows became graphical, and I found interest in even more computer games with even greater experiences and capabilities. Windows was the dominant operating system at the time, but I was soon to find there was a whole different world out there of operating systems. While out on vacation in Washington, DC, my Dad and I were able to meet with the local Tech Fanatics group, HackDC. It was here where I discovered Linux. Linux, an alternative to Windows, immediately grabbed my attention when I saw it in use. It appeared to me as something that only the extreme computer users even heard of. Upon my return home,

Nowadays, most of the web, email, database and fileservers are Linux servers. Linux is a UNIX system which implies that it has solid compatibility, stability and security features. Linux is used for the mentioned environments because these services require high security. Further, an increase of attacks on these servers can be observed. Additionally, the methods to prevent intrusions on Linux machines are insufficient. Further, the analysis of incidents on Linux systems are not considered appropriately (Choi, Savoldi, Gubian, Lee, & Lee, 2008). It can also be observed that a lot of investigators do not have experience with Linux forensics (Altheide, 2004).
As the internet is becoming faster and faster, an operating system (OS) is needed to manage the data in computers. An Operating system can be considered to be a set of programed codes that are created to control hardware such as computers. In 1985 Windows was established as an operating system and a year earlier Mac OS was established, and they have dominated the market of the computer programs since that time. Although, many companies have provided other operating systems, most users still prefer Mac as the most secured system and windows as it provides more multiple functions. This essay will demonstrate the differences between windows
Retail system management can be an exhausting and daunting task. However, successfully evaluating the efficiency of an organization’s operating system is necessary to ensure a smooth and efficient operating stance for any venturing company. In this example, I will discuss the evaluation of RadioShack’s current operating system—Windows 98.

Then came Linus Benedict Torvalds. At the time he was a sophomore majoring in Computer Science at the University of Helsinki, his hobby also included computer programming. At 21 he found himself spending most of his time toying with computer systems, trying to see what he could do in order to push their limits and increase their functionality. The key missing in his tests was an operating system that had the flexibility craved for by professionals. MINIX was available, though it was still just a stu...

Against the above background, this report is intended to provide an objective review of where and how Linux might fit into your business related plans and activities moving forward. The aim is to deliver insight rather than recommendations – i.e. it is not my intention to either advocate or discourage desktop Linux adoption, just to help understand the potential benefits, issues and practicalities so the fit...

Implementation of the virtual machine is difficult. A lot of work is required to provide an exact duplicate of the underlying machine, which has both the user mode and kernel mode. The virtual machine software can run in kernel mode since it is the operating system, where the virtual machine itself can only execute in user mode. In a virtual machine implementation, there must be a virtual user mode and a virtual kernel mode, both of which run in a physical user...
Computers are one of the most popular kinds of electronic devices in the world today. Whether kid or adult, male or female, everyone wants to learn how to operate the computer. People use computers for different purposes such as typing papers, creating websites, making presentations, browsing on the internet, playing games, etc. In fact, many people are still confused about choosing what kind of computer they want to buy. In the world today, there are two types of computers: notebook/laptop and desktop. They both are actually very different in several ways. In this paper, I will compare the size, connectivity, power, and price of notebook and desktop computers. I can make these comparisons because I have both a notebook and a desktop computer in my apartment.

Where would we be without operating systems? Technologically, we would be living in the Stone Age, computers would be useless without an operating system. What is an operating system? An operating system is computer instructions that coordinate all the activities of a computers’ hardware like, memory, storage devices, and printers (Gary B. Shelly).
