The man of the nineteenth century. Many historians argue that American culture is based on Civil War and its outcome. It is easy to agree with that statement, because one cannot even imagine living in a slave-owning society that would most definitely develop if the South had won. Abraham Lincoln, America’s sixteenth President was the most influential man of the war. He was responsible for mobilizing the North’s power, getting people, both Republicans and Democrats, to sympathize with the Union cause and consequently, winning the war. This is what makes Lincoln the most influential man of the nineteenth century. Lincoln was born into an “undistinguished family”. His parents died, when Lincoln was just a child, and he had to struggle greatly in order to get some education. Lincoln served as a captain in the Black Hawk War after which he continued with a law career. Lincoln spent eight years in the Illinois legislature. In 1858 Lincoln ran against Douglas in series of debates for Senator’s position. Although Lincoln lost, these debates won him the nomination of 1860. His greatest accomplishments were to come much later. When Lincoln was inaugurated in 1861, he made it perfectly clear that the secession of the South was unconstitutional. He was willing to compromise with the South on the issue of slavery, the driving force behind South’s secession. Unfortunately, South was not interested in compromising. After the Fort Sumter was forced to surrender by the Confederate troops, Lincoln declared war. Since he was running a centralized government rather than the South that believed in states’ rights over central government, Lincoln was able to efficiently mobilize Union’s people and resources. That, of course, played an essential role in the final victory, and is one of Lincoln’s greatest accomplishments. The victory of the Union affects today’s society just as much, or maybe even more that the War for Independence. As mentioned, Civil War is the underlying event of American history and further formation of its culture. It is impossible to even conceive a society that would develop as a result of Confederate victory. Asides from being a slave owning and perhaps, a slave trading nation for many years, America would also lack a centralized government and much of its international power. No one knows how many years it would take for the Confederacy to abolish slavery. Lincoln, on the other hand, abolished slavery in 1863 , two years after the beginning of the war.
To summarize, the congressional committee system is a double-edged sword. It ensures that appropriate attention is given to each bill, but it can be easily corrupted by partisan influence. Surely, though, the advantages far outweigh the consequences. Committees are an integral part of the law-making process. They help to expedite the process of passing laws and ensure that only relevant issues are brought to the chambers of Congress for consideration.
While working in the House of Representatives and in the U.S. Senate hold different requirements their main purpose is to work together to form what is known as the United States Congress. Together they work to regulate laws and to form new ones when necessary. They are in place to keep the powers separate and to make sure that the power never lies with one group. Both the House of Representatives and the Senate play a very important role in the way the government
Gatsby is not so great because he is a liar. From the very start Gatsby is said to be an alumnus from Oxford, who fought in WWI, hunted big game, and had parents from the Midwest. He even justifies himself when Nicks asks and Gatsby pulls out a picture of him at Oxford and a WWI medal that he carried around in his pocket. He even changed his name, James Gatz to Jay Gatsby, but why? “James Gatz – that was really, or at least legally, his name. He had changed it at the age of seventeen and at the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career” (6). Gatsby is mysterious and mystifying, known for his large parties yet no one knows why he has them. Keep in mind this is the prohibition era, but at Gatsby’s parties there is always plenty of alcohol to go around and no one knows where it comes from or how he acquires so much, one of the many mysteries. In attendance at these parties there are people like Meyer Wolfshiem “the man who really did fix the 1919 World Series” (118), to the mayors and governors. More questions arise in this company as to how Gatsby is associated with gangsters and why they attend these large parties. It is completely ironic how so many attend these parties but none ...
Religion is a symbolic representation of society. The sociological approach to religious belief looks at how society behaves on a whole, to answer the question, “Why are people religious?” We express our participation in religious events through plays, acts of confession, religious dances, etc. To begin to understand why we have such term, let’s understand the common elements of religion. There are different types in which people believe in or follow and that is: animatism, animism, ancestral spirits, god and goddesses, and minor supernatural beings. Beyond these different elements, such one is to have religious leaders to follow.
As a child, Jay Gatsby grew up on a farm. He saw his parents as nothing but lethargic farmers. Gatsby knew exactly what he didn’t want to be and that was like his parents. They were people who were content with who they were. Gatsby, on the other hand, was the exact opposite. He wanted to move on. Jay Gatsby wanted to be someone special, someone with prestige and someone definitely with money. Gatsby developed a self improvement plan to help him flourish as a young man. His plan detailed dumbbell exercises, studying electricity, practicing elocution and studying needed inventions. Even his parents knew he was driven. His father said:
Finally, Gatsby is a very appealing character because he has a lot of style and he is driven by this dream of being upper class that he becomes a millionaire and has this remarkable life style but he can’t get Daisy and he dies trying to get her back. Gatsby’s problem is that it’s not enough for him to be rich now he doesn’t care about the parties or the life style. He needs to reach back into this past and start a life with daisy when they were both innocent that was the moment when he needed to be a rich kid but he can’t change the past.
Gatsby is a character that starts off very in the dark and we don’t know much about him, but as the book develops and the other characters develop Gatsby’s true character is revealed. When we first look at Gatsby we see him as a lonely introvert who uses his money as a cover up. We see his loneliness in this quote by Nick saying “… fifty feet away a figure had emerged from the shadows of my neighbour’s mansion and was standing with his hands in his pockets …- he stretched out his arms towards the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling … I glanced seaward – and distinguished nothing except a single green light … at the end of a dock” (Fitzgerald 25). This quote really shows our first look at the true Gatsby as a man who is blinded by his love for Daisy and as he develops with the theme we really get the same look as the man from the short story Araby. One of the themes in this book is Class, the old money, and new money, Gatsby is new money and as the book develops we really start to see how he will never be like the characters who are old money no matter how much he develops as a character. Gatsby becomes a more predominant character with all the parties he throws and reconnecting with his love Daisy we see how Gatsby covers himself and his whole life is really a façade. We know that his life is a façade when he figure out that Gatsby changes his name from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby because he wanted to get away from his old life. This ties in with the theme of the class, the American dream and also his character development because we are able to follow him as he starts to unravel his life to Nick. Gatsby’s character is blinded and he stays blinded through the whole book and as the book develops Gatsby stays blinded which gets him killed in the end. We see how he is blind through the quote saying “Gatsby bought that house so
Durkheim’s study of religion in The Elementary Forms of Religious Life is widely renowned to be one of the founding theories and definitions of the sociology of religion. The Elementary Forms of Religious Life presents Durkheim’s core belief that sociology of religion should be studied in a rational and objective manner. This essay will go into the definition of religion provided in chapter 2 in depth, particularly Durkheim’s sacred and profane dichotomy, which he views as fundamental to religion, and his controversial denial of the divine being necessary for all religions. This essay will examine the counterargument of how the Divine could arguably be a feature common in all religions. Furthermore, we will focus on Durkheim 's problematic
Gatsby always keep a positive attitude with him throughout his life. For example, he did not step
some, such as Karl max saw that religion is a way strong of a tool that impairs social evaluation. Which resulted in ethnic and religious cleansing and furthermore proved to be the wrong approach to defining the role that religion plays in societies behaviors. I for one, think that religion is an indispensable and integral part of human sociology; furthermore, I believe understanding this relationship would lead to social development.
The interest groups are said use a lot of funds annually especially for food and entertainment so that they can spend significant time convincing these legislature on the policy making systems (Ramsey: 1). Over a period of 2 years, Lobbyists have reported usage of $4.8 million (Ramsey: 1) of food and beverages alone hence this shows that they actually take part in influencing the decision. The names of policy makers are mostly not disclosed although they should only be included in the Lobbyists reports when the expenses by the legislature exceeded $114, the names of those legislatures should be reported (Ramsey: 1). Therefore, the Lobbyists can ensure that they do not expose the beneficially of these special treatment through splitting their expenditures among several lobbyist so as to control anyone spending over $114 on a single law maker official (Ramsey: 1). Limitation of this usage can be done through limiting the number of Lobbyists that an Interest group can employ on a simultaneously. This will drastically reduce the expenditure since some groups hire more than 1 lobbyist (Ramsey: 1).
Lobbyists are people with strong communication who seek the favors of influential people to enact a change in their community. They may achieve this through earnest proposals, petitions, favors, or bribery. From labor unions to the local senior citizen club, lobbyists are found just about everywhere. Many people naturally associate lobbying with the evil, dark side. It is important to know that lobbying itself is not a negative action. In fact, pos...
Most of the time, a student cannot learn at their own pace of the subject because the teacher has a schedule and other students so that student can easily fall behind or not feel as if they are learning. Also, if a student misses a class due to an illness or some other sort of reason they will get behind in classes, while with online class the student can still work while sick or the class will not move on without them. Some schools do not offer some classes that students wish to take. For example, some schools may not present a language class that the pupil wishes to take but online they have a better chance of being able to take that
Pastor Bill also spoke about the revelation of forgiveness and grace. This is the theological themes of Sacraments and Salvation. The last sermon I attended for this assignment was on November 13, 2016, which was about igniting our fearlessness. Pastor, Bill provided four characteristics of Jesus that inspired femaleness; 1) his speech 2) his bravery 3) his death and 4) his mission. He described Jesus as an Alpha male leader and the Lion of Judah. The point to the theological theme of Jesus, the Son of God, who came down to earth to save humanity from sin. Jesus Christ teaches the words of God, and he spoke the truth with love and people listened. Jesus illustrated his bravery when he revealed himself as the Messiah who leads to him being crucified. He overcame death and received the victory. Jesus also knows his purpose as the Son of God, and he did serve the Lord and his people with passion and joy. Pastor Bill shared this characteristic of Jesus so that we can follow his step. We should not be afraid of anything because “we can do all things through Christ” (Philippians 4:13). Pastor Bill invited the church to reach out to others without fear and do great things for the Lord. The four sermons I’ve attended are related to the theological concept I was learning from The Basic.
Today’s generation is like no other. The nation as a whole has completely evolved from past times, with technology being one of the greatest improvements. Traditionally, schooling takes place in a classroom setting, but, with the many modifications in our world’s system, we are able to assimilate more modern means of education, such as online learning. However, with many changes comes differences and requires adjustments. The online learning system has proven to be just as effective as traditional learning, with some minor differences, however, nothing of great significance. A few of those insignificant differences include online learning being convenient, especially for the non-traditional students,
