Commencement Speech Lin-Manuel Miranda is an American Composer who is worldly recognized for his musical named “In The Heights.” Throughout his life, he’s won a variety of awards which leaves him only one Oscar away from achieving EGOT status. EGOT represents that a person has won all four of the major entertainment awards such as an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. (Liebman Entertainment LLC) Due to the fact of his accomplishments, Miranda was chosen to speak at the University of Pennsylvania graduation in the year 2016. Lin-Manuel Miranda states “ Your stories are essential” encouraging the graduates to go on and share their stories with others. Since adolescents are the future of our country, Miranda intended for the older generation to hear this message convincing the wise folks to pass on their knowledge to young adults. In his speech, he expresses that “Someone will thank you for telling your story because it resonated with their own.” implying that what one is going through someone else has already experienced it. He uses his shoulder cracking as a method of coping with reality and pain, but his back specialist tells him “You’re trying to avoid going through pain or causing pain. I’m here to tell you that you’ll have to survive it if you want to be any kind of artist.” This technique helps everyone think of what is stopping them from fulfilling their dream or what causes them to “crack their shoulder.” it also makes him feel more relatable. Miranda actually introduces his speech with “ I begin with an apology.” he tends to apology constantly hoping that the crowd will sense his
remorse. The tone that Lin Manuel Miranda chose to speak in was mild yet amusing. As he was talking everyone was attentive but he was also entertaining, which made one more intrigued-when he crack a joke here and there-. He chooses this tone in consideration of not sleeping everyone with a lengthy dull speech. Sharing stories that he’s never told anyone manufactured a friend like conversation instead of a serious one. Made the atmosphere considerably cordial. Miranda’s compassionate approach assisted in the effectiveness of the speech generating this alliance with the listeners. Lin Manuel Miranda’s speech was significantly effective because he formed a trust and relation with the multitude listening to him. Causing them to feel as if they were the major characters he stated “ I feel so honor to be a detail, a minor character in the story of your graduation day.” The parts that were most effective was when he mentioned that immigrants got the job done because a numerous amount of people have immigrant families so, it made them feel like someone else understood them. Also, the conclusion of his speech was extremely powerful because he tells the graduates that yes of course there will be obstacles but one has to be able to learn how to overcome them and grow as a person. These phrases and the way Miranda used his words influenced one to feel confident in taking place of this story telling.

The speech was straightforward and supplied valuable information for their future. . McCullough’s speech at times felt harsh, offensive, and insulting. His words and examples were given to achieve insight, knowledge, and awareness for each student’s future. The commencement speech given by David Foster Wallace in the autumn of 2005, is a very deep speech that examines the whole idea of a Liberal Arts education at an extremely deep and intellectual level. In the 22 minute long speech Wallace talks about how higher education not only teaches you to think but “how to exercise some control over how and what you think.” (Wallace). Wallace later in his speech stresses the importance of this level of thinking by saying “if you cannot exercise this kind of choice in adult life, you will be totally hosed” (Wallace) What he means by saying this is that if you cannot think at a higher level and make sense of real world problems your life will become meaningless and you will become dead inside your head.

On a Wednesday night I saw Texas State Theatre and Dance Department's performance of A Chorus Line. The main plot of the musical entails the audition of 17 dancers for several Broadway roles on the chorus line. However, during their auditions the director Zach asks for personal stories of each dancer's life. Though the plot of this musical is seemingly simple in its twist on the traditional audition, it explores themes that reveal the human experience, the search for individuality, and the sense of self.
In this song The Fray takes great effort to convey the point of talking with the youth of today about making the correct decisions that will have a large affect upon one's life. Although the song in no way forces the narrators thoughts and ideas upon the youth they still firmly instill the knowledge of his choices impact on his future. Ideally this would be a guideline, an alarm of hope, a script on how to one day "save a life."

Hi Pamela, it is nice to meet you. I thank you for being so in-depthed about the knowledge that we just received about immigration. It is amazing to see other cultures come from one extreme form of lifestyle, then settle and make great contribution to this country. I was also intrigued about how Americans flew the Cubans in to be in partnership to help build this country, but on the other hand laws tried to hold them hostage from their families until they thought it was their duty to allow them to return to their country.
Princeton, from the musical “Avenue Q”, can be described as happy, lost, and optimistic. As a recent graduate from college, Princeton has no idea what to do with a B.A. in English. Although Princeton is thrown this seemingly impossible obstacle to overcome, he is determined to find his purpose in life, and it is this quality that Princeton encompasses that I relate to.
For this concert report I chose to go to a performance of student composers held at the Kimball Recital Hall. I chose this one because I wanted to see some of the talent that my peers have in the music realm, and also it was one of the only concerts I have been able to attend because I usually work at night. It was impressive to hear pieces composed by students. I cannot imagine creating something as complex as a musical composition, much less actually performing it, so this aspect of the concert was particularly awe-inspiring. There was a large attendance, and I think that much of the audience consisted of friends of the composers and/or performers. I went with three friends, who I convinced by telling it would be interesting to see student composers.
