Lime Bikes Should Be Allowed In Schools

The problem with LimeBike at California State University of Northridge is that students are parking their bikes at the end of their rides on undesignated areas. Some of the places students are parking the bikes are residential areas, people’s lawns, and left in the middle of parking structures. One of the school’s residential neighbors Randy Finnerman noted that the bikes are dropped off on his property daily. Randy mentioned, “One time someone left their bike in the middle of my driveway. I had to pick it up and throw it to the curb. Almost pulled my back out doing so.” Not only is negligent docking disturbing the surrounding community, it is also becoming a safety hazard. Although there is a page dedicated to LimeBike describing expectations along with a video stating where bikes should be parked on the CSUN website, users are still not abiding by these rules. With the amount of reports sent to Limebike about the this docking issue, they are now forced to take action. The service is extremely beneficial to the ones who use it daily. One of the benefits of having these on campus is safety. On a recent bulletin sent out, Jonathan Goldenberg writes “The best feedback we have gotten so far was from some of the female students who have reached out to us saying they feel safer getting across campus or heading home after dark thanks to having access to a bike”. Safety is a big concern on our campus, if we can eliminate one less fear to our students by keeping these bikes on board then we should all make an effort to do so. Bikes abandoned in creeks and trees could mean the end of what promises to be a very useful program that could benefit the CSUN community.
