For this assignment I selected Lilly’s Big Day by Kevin Henkes. It was published in 2006 by the Greenwillow Books publishing house. In this story Lilly finds out her favorite teacher, Mr. Slinger, is getting married. Lilly is determined to be the flower girl in his wedding. After practicing a bunch, Lilly finds out she will not be the flower girl. Mr. Slinger knows how important this was to Lilly so he makes her the flower girl assistant. Lilly saves the day at the wedding because she had been practicing and was able to help the real flower girl. This story teaches the importance of prating, and using your imagination. It even teaches the way you should act when you do not get something you really want. Lilly’s Big Day is 30 pages long with
integrated text and pictures. The general age range for this book is between 4-8 years old. This book has received amazing reviews praising the strong female character. It has also won a bunch of awards: #1 New York Times Bestseller, Charlotte Zolotow Award Honor Book, and many more.Kevin Henkes loves writing and illustrating children's books much like Maurice Sendak. He likes using simple tools like a typewriter to write is books. When selecting his images for books, he makes multiple copies of each picture and makes them in different colors and different mediums. This link I attached is a video about Kevin Henkes. It would be neat to incorporate this video in a writing class.
In Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson it brings forth the lesson of perseverance. Mattie had to keep going and persevering even though her world was crashing down around her. When Mother first got sick Mattie had to look after her and attempt to care for her.

While Peter is being outsides, he sits on his chair and realizes that he is too big to the chair. He goes back home and tells his father that he would like to paint the chair in pink and give it to his little sister.

I read the picture book If you give a pig a party by Laura Nemeroff. This book is about a little girl who wants celebrate her pig's birthday, she is planing a lot of activities , such as the decoration, the games, and the the food. She realized that planning a birthday is a hard work because she has to keep happy to all pig's friends (different animals). This book has a lot of pictures to keep the children's attention when an adult is reading. I read it to my students and my daughter and they want to read it again and again.
As I was starting my homework, I heard my mom yell "Honey! Come down for dinner!!". As I went down the stairs, an aroma of buttery mashed potatoes filled the air. As soon as I sat down at the table, my father asked the same question he does everyday, "what did you learn at school today sweetheart?" "Well, I read a story called "Block Party" and we had to identify the theme of the story, which was that you dont necessarily need a mother to grow up well, get advice, help regarding more personal problems, or to have a female role model in your life. I agree with the theme of the story because if you need advice you can always ask your friends, or or if you are having more personal problems you could go to other relatives in your family. Also, you could have another female role model, such as an aunt or a grandmother.
For my summer reading assignment I chose to read the book “Cake Pop Crush” by Suzanne Nelson. I selected this book, because when I read the analogy of the book it really got my attention. It sounded like a competitive, romance, and eye catching type of book mixed in one. While reading the book I constantly was wanting to know what was going to happen next.
Boy’s Life and emancipation were both really good passages. Boy’s Life can be relatable to boys and girls. Boy’s Life is about a kid who is really anxious to get out of the last day of school. On the last day of school, he sees it as the first day of summer. The bell rings and all of the students get up and start running for the door. Then the teacher tells everybody to sit back down and I will dismiss you row by row. She finally dismisses every single row in the classroom and everyone is going out of the classroom at a walking pace and when they get out of sight they start running down the hallway like a bunch of maniacs. When she finally dismisses the last row she pulls a kid named Cory Mackenson, and talks to him about this writing competition that he should do. He said that he will think about it. She tells him to go to the bus before he is too late. Cory is the only one in the hallway because everyone else is on the bus and ready to go home.
This book I read had some two hundred and twenty-three pages, It was called “ Rain Reign By Ann M. Martin,” she has a very interesting story line, with the genre of realism. About a girl named rose, a fifth grade girl in New York that is very organized, and her father who had brought her a dog one day after school. When attempting to bring about change, some people are more successful at it than others. Some people find it relatively easy to change something while for others it is very difficult. One of the reasons that occurs is because the successful people enhance and utilize their skills in order to bring about change. In the book Insight Out by Tina Seelig, four main skills are discussed in a hierarchal and cyclic system. Seelig then highlights each skill in turn and includes projects for the reader to do in order to enhance that particular skill. These skills include imagination, creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Everyone deserves an education, but for some in the developing world, especially girls, it is hard to even get into a classroom, due to the opposition from those who believe a girl 's place is in the home, not the classroom. The 2013 documentary Girl Rising by Richard E. Robbins states, “There are 33 million less girls in primary school worldwide than boys.” Girl Rising tells the stories of nine girls varying in ages throughout the developing world who only want to learn or where school saved their lives. Richard E. Robbins the director of the film, uses famous celebrities to tell these stories in hope to reach people all over the world in order to raise awareness and money to girls’ educations worldwide. Mr. Robbins film produces a concerned or worried tone throughout the documentary which intrigued the viewer to pay full attention to the film. Mr. Robbins uses lots of textual strategies in the form of statistics and interesting facts, as well as audio strategies such as the celebrity
“Love” by William Maxwell is a short story that tells the tale of a young elementary school aged boy and his classmates who are in love with their fifth grade teacher, Miss Vera Brown, but the love for their teacher is not exactly the same as her love for her students. The students liked their teacher and saw her as one of the best teachers in the fifth grade. Her fifth grade class was very polite to her and never acted out. They gave Miss Vera Brown plenty of presents like an apple on her desk before class started, flowers, and a movie for her birthday.
