What is a rebel? A rebel is a person that fights authority. A rebel is someone who opposes her parents. When talking about Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel, this is the perfect definition of a rebel. Why? The second definition is the more accurate definition because it sums up what Gertrudis De La Garza is. Don’t get me wrong; both definitions serve Gertrudis justice. The first one just describes Gertrudis in a very vague and general way. The second definition taps into more detail that defines her role in the dictatorship run by Mama Elena. When did she become a rebel? It wasn’t until Pedro and Tita displayed their secret. On this night, Tita made quail in rose petal sauce. This was the night that Gertrudis was the vessel of communication …show more content…
for Pedro and Tita. Within Gertrudis’ body she felt all of the passion, rage and desire between the two secret love birds. After dinner was done, Gertrudis was still feeling “hot”. She thought if she took a shower it would help her greatly. While bathing outside she let off the delicate yet potent aroma of roses. The next thing that happened was she was swept off of her feet by a soldier on a horse, who once caught her eye at a market. Let’s just say that things got steamy on that poor horse. Once that soldier came and picked up Gertrudis, she never returned. Over time she still possessed the strong desire that was within her, so she ended up working in a brothel. She did this to put out this flame that she sheltered inside her. She said that she worked in the brothel because that one soldier wasn’t able to put out her flame and she had exhausted him. At this time it was thought that she would not return to the ranch. I theorized that she would not return because she was happy with who she became. It is nothing that Mama Elena wanted, but in Gertrudis’ eyes Mama Elena has her own life she can run, and sadly she had Tita’s to run too, but she would not run Gertrudis’ life as well. Gertrudis had great support for Tita and Pedro’s secret love.
The reason why the readers can tell that she is about the only one who had support for that “illegal” love, was because she was the only one at the Quail in Rose Petal Sauce dinner that became aware of something strange. She was the only one who notice that both Tita and Pedro were outside of their physical self. Better yet, she was the only one who was used as a vessel for the communication for Tita and Pedro’s love connection. “With that meal it seemed they had discovered a new system of communication, in which Tita was the transmitter, Pedro the receiver, and poor Gertrudis the medium, the conducting body through which the singular sexual message was passed” (pg.52 LWFC). In this quote it says how the system was set up. Tita was having many physical sensation within her when she penetrated Pedro’s farthest corners. The readers can theorize that Gertrudis had support of their relationship because, Mama Elena and Rosaura didn’t so they weren’t aware of the out of body experiences that Tita and Pedro were having. They also didn't have a physical reaction to the food as Gertrudis did, nor did they notice her …show more content…
reactions. Why is Gertrudis a rebel? Gertrudis is a rebel because it was her calling. Up until that moment when her senses clicked, telling her that she needed to leave the ranch, she never really actually had a purpose. Mama Elena her mother, was the dictator of the ranch. Rosaura was the vessel that Mama Elena would live through, starting the day she died. Tita was a civilian who overcame the wrath of the dictator, otherwise known as her mother. So what role did that leave Gertrudis? The middle child that is an echo, not one who possesses a voice? The gray between the black and white? Sadly, none of these roles reflected Gertrudis for the character she truly was. Another theory of why she became a rebel was because it really was her calling.
She is the product of Mama Elena and her African American lover boy. She was the product of something out of the ordinary so she shall live a life that is out of the ordinary. In a very small way she shares her rebellious quality with her mother. Mama Elena was caught loving a negro, and was frowned upon because of it. Did that stop her from loving him? No. Did that stop her from becoming the best mom she can be, or a mom that keep her household together once her husband passed away? No. So who says that Gertrudis can’t be a whore and still be a good person. She is the product of an out of the ordinary couple, so she will be out of the ordinary, showing also that Gertrudis can be a good person while being “lovable.” The end of the book shows that Gertrudis does turn out to be a good person. Better yet, she comes back as a general in the army, shocking
everyone. Gertrudis’ rebellion was a good thing for her, but what her sister Tita? When Gertrudis rebelled against her mother, she practically further trapped Tita. Tita was now ten feet deeper under her mother’s dictatorship (figuratively speaking). When Gertrudis left Mama Elena tighten her grip on her other two children. So, when one of her children left, and dishonored the family name, Mama Elena became more strict. She provided Tita with the close to no leeway. Tita always had to be in the eyesight of Mama Elena (due to Pedro living in the house). Mama Elena didn’t change the way she treated Rosaura. Rosaura was seen as the child with the halo. Tita felt hopeless while Gertrudis was away. Tita's life became more worse, just when the reader thought it wasn't possible. Yes, Gertrudis’ rebellion was good for her, but for Tita? No. Gertrudis De La Garza. What is Gertrudis? Gertrudis is a person that fights authority. Gertrudis is someone who rebels against her parents. Gertrudis is the one who was a voice; she is not just another echo. She shows that if you obey all rules, you really do miss all the fun.

When Tita had made dinner for her mother, Mama Elena brutally rejected her kindness. Tita could not understand why her mother treated her cruelly, "she didn't understand Mama Elena's attitude . . . It was beyond her comprehension that one person, whatever her relationship with another, could reject the kind gesture in such a brutal manner . . ." (130-131). After all that they had gone through, Tita thought at least some things had changed. Of course nothing had changed because Mama Elena saw her daughter as she saw her self many years before. But after her mother's death Tita was enlightened when see discovered her mother's love letters from José, her mother's only true love (137).
Though her mother keeps Tita from marrying the love of her life (Pedro) and living
Estrella states “Maybe it was love or maybe I was pierced by the look on Catina’s face as she watched us from her yard . Shed come back outside after Andres had left with me and she was still there, staring. She’d been watching all along I wish she hadn’t seen us. I wished we were strangers . I wished i had met Andres hundreds if miles away from Encaleflora.” (Hoffman 95)
This causes Tita to take her anger out on Elena. This is the first time Tita has stood up for herself. Later in the story Elena grows sick and dies. Then her ghost comes back to yell at Tita for becoming pregnant with Pedro. With this I wonder, did Elena ever really love Tita? This is her daughter and she never showed compassion for her. Throughout the story she has treated Tita more like a slave than her daughter. Also in the story the readers find out that Elena went through the same thing Tita is experiencing. Elena was in love with a man, but her parents forbid the marriage. They then proposed that she marry another man and was forced to go through with it. Elena continued the affair with her love and became pregnant. The man that Elena loved was killed before she had any chance to run away with him. Leaving her heartbroken with a man in whom she does not love. So Elena, out of all people should understand what Tita is going through. Most people would assume that Elena would be all for Tita marrying Pedro, but for some odd reason she won 't let it happen. Some might wonder if Elena has the mindset of, “If I couldn 't have my love, neither can she”. This thought process is extremely childish though. Elena can see Tita suffering through this, but never changes her ways. Why would anyone want to see his or her own child suffer? Elena has to have some good in her; unfortunately she never seems to show it. Even as a ghost she curses Tita and her child. Now that in death she still can’t accept Tita and what she chooses. There doesn 't seem to be much love in this family. Even after all these issues and foolish family traditions, Rosaura has decided to not let Esperanza marry. No one has seemed to learn that not allowing their child to marry only causes
Tomas and Tereza’s marriage was fragile and based on Tomas’s sympathy for his wife’s irrevocable urge to fully complete him, mentally and physically. In this Tomas did only what he could do; go from woman to woman while carrying the scent of female genitalia with him. Tereza carried her grief and regret in solitude yet she remained undaunted by an unexplainable force. Their dog Karenin seemed to be the only connection the couple shared. This animal gave them earnest trust and in return they committed their love. “It is a completely selfless love,” Kundera writes, “ Tereza did not want anything of Karenin; she did not ever ask him to lov...
The main theme of the movie is love especially the love between the Tita and Pedro. We can feel love in different ways like through family deaths, time, distance, traditions and secrecy. The love between Tita and Pedro is a forbidden love stated by the tradition of Tita’s family. Pedro fell in love with Tita since the first time he saw her and when he tried to ask for her hand in marriage Tita’s mother, Elena, declined because of their traditions. Pedro married Tita’s older sister thinking that he could be close to her. Tita tries to obey her mother’s demands and suppress her feelings for Pedro but she never succeeded. They believed that what they felt was true love and that everyone else was against them. I personally don’t believe its true love. True love is when they don’t have doubts or worries about their relationship. In the movie, Tita and Pedro were always worried about each other. Tita always felt anxious when seeing Pedro and her sister together and doubt that Pedro really felt something for her. Also, when Pedro was away she went with another man and almost...
When the leading female in the role, Daisy Buchanan, learns that the child she is giving birth to is a girl she says “I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool . . . the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool” (Fitzgerald 21). This shows how Daisy has given up at this point in her life and realizes that women will never amount to anything and that they have no role in society other than becoming someone's wife and or mother. Daisy Buchanan is fully aware of the role that women play during this time. She, unlike most women, knows of her own marginalization and admits that females are powerless and unimportant as they are living in a male-dominated society. The author's presentation of women is essentially very unsympathetic and unflattering. Daisy is also a character who is struggling with being in love with a man other than her husband, but knows that she cannot go out and have an affair. A literary critic Lihua Zhang states how The Great Gatsby is a, “Disillusion of American Dream . . . the way of dealing with true love and lo...
They were rarely called simply “peasants” or “rebels”, instead Froissart used specially chosen descriptive words that without a single shred of evidence can bias how the writing is viewed. Words like “Barbarion”, “mad dogs”, “Evil men”, and “Ungracious” were all used, many of them more than one time. Words and phrases like these influence how someone would think of the rebels, instead of normal people who are simply tired of being oppressed one is more likely to conclude that these are inhuman monsters. Froissart himself comes to the same conclusion, claiming the acts claimed to have been committed by the rebels were ones that normal people couldn’t possibly do. He claims they not only know they are inhuman, but that they enjoy it and that they chose their king specifically because he was the most horrible of them
Tita is a good hearted and strong spirited woman. Mama Elena only made Tita stronger by the way she treated her. Tita looks up to Gertrudis because she is happy and got to do what she wanted, when she wanted and with whom she wanted. In the end I believe she was happy but at very high price to pay, her life. Tita loves everyone in her family even the ones who treated her badly and this is what binds her to them. Tita has some hatred towards her mother because of her not letting her marry and also shows some hatred towards Rosaura for marrying Pedro when she knows that she is in love with him.
It seems that she is disempowered just in order for the protagonist to have and intercourse with her. After the card is received by the player, she becomes her “old”, powerful self. Receiving the romance card after having an intercourse with Triss, might motivate the player to be willing to romance every woman “available” and to collect all the cards. Throughout the game, player can collect 25 cards. Many of Geralt’s “love” interests have to be rescued first, for example, Vesna Hood, the second woman that the witcher can seduce in the game. Player can save her from bandits who are harassing her and then walk her home. She then, asks him how could she repay him, and he proposes another meeting. She agrees and asks him to meet him in a mill, next day after a sunset and bring wine. After the intercourse, player receives another card. Other card can be acquired by buying certain type od jewelery or flowers. Prostitutes, can simply be payed for sex. It seems that women in the game are either disempowered or passive, or are simply goods that can be bought or exchanged for flowers or
The beginning of the marriage was peaceful. Then Griselda gave birth to a daughter. It is at this time that Gualtieri begins to “test” Griselda. His tests are actually forms of emotional abuse. He begins by testing Griselda’s obedience by having the child taken away to be raised elsewhere by woman kinfolk. He told Griselda that their daughter was dead, that he had her killed by his subjects. He repeats this same test with the birth of their son a few years later. Griselda, with no words of protest, surrenders both her children to their deaths by their own father, her husband.
What do you think of when you hear the word rebel? Someone in black clothes, partying and getting into trouble in the middle of the night? Or do you think of someone who stands up for what they believe in and fights for what they know is right? Dictionary.com defines a rebel as “a person who refuses allegiance to, resists, or rises in arms against the government or ruler of his or her country.” It also defines it as “a person who resists any authority, control, or tradition” (2015). A rebel could be a good thing or a bad thing. Some of my favorite rebels aren’t even real; they come from my favorite young adult fiction books. A few examples of awesome rebels are Katniss from The Hunger Games, Lena from Delirium, Ruby from
