5The English 102 class taught by Professor Malchodi has taught me many aspects of the theme of “life passages” and the works of literature inside and out. My engagement in class has taught me more about the works of literature regarding the theme of “life passages” and, expanded my abilities to engage in meaningful discussion through discussion groups during class, and writing essays. My engagement with the material through group discussions, writing essays, the focus on myself, and fitting into the classroom setting all contribute to building my foundation of literary works and knowledge.

The assigned writing assessments, journals, and essays all incorporate me trying to analyze and go in depth of the assigned readings. All the forms of the writing assignments incorporate one another with the theme of “life passages.” However, each story provides different situations and backgrounds. For our writing assignments, I would write in-depth about my reactions and thoughts towards the stories I have read and analyzed the literary elements and how they advance our theme of “life passages.” I enjoy that the theme of “life passage” is the main prerogative for the class and writing assignments. That most of the stories we have read in class carry a lesson, my writing abilities have grown positively from my engagement with these writing assignments. I’ve never been in a classroom setting that expected us to discuss our writing assignments.Such as discussing our journals to the class and in the assigned groups in every class. I was skeptical of the idea first, but now I have learned to appreciate the class and group discussion idea. Besides sharing our reactions and ideas, I have developed more personal relationships with my classmates from this. Prose has noticed through her experience that college students are unable to read even the basic pieces of literature. Some are also “incapable of doing the close line-by-line reading necessary to disclose the most basic information.” This is due to the little concentration and focus on the writing of a book. These students are also the ones who loathe literature. The students are quick to make judgements about books and their character because they have been taught that in high school. This is taught to them through reading questions asking about the student’s opinion on a certain character or even the author. This diverts their minds totally from learning about literature to learning about how to judge a character or story.
Both awe-inspiring and indescribable is life, the defined “state of being” that historians and scholars alike have been trying to put into words ever since written language was first created. And in the words of one such intellectual, Joshua J. Marine, “Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful”. Essentially, he is comparing life to a bowl of soup. Without challenges or hardship into which we can put forth effort and show our potential, it becomes a dull and flavorless broth. But for characters in novels like Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, and Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, the difficulties and trials that we all must face can transfigure the mundane liquid mixture of existence into a vibrant and fulfilling gumbo. The protagonists of these works are two strong-willed and highly admirable women, who prevail in the face of overwhelming odds stacked in everyone’s favor but theirs. In their trying periods of isolation brought about by cold and unwelcoming peers, particularly men, they give their lives meaning by simply pushing forward, and living to tell the tale.
Literature is an outlet for imagination without restrictions, a platform for expression, and a form of art that outlives its author. Most importantly, it can be a way to help one truly discover themselves. As audiences are exposed to more literature throughout their lives, they not only learn about their true potential, but are also made aware of their flaws and faults in character. Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird and Alexander Hamilton in Hamilton are both remarkable characters, but from various events that reveal their shortcomings, the audience receives the opportunity to learn from their mistakes. By appreciating literature, one not only receives a wonderful story, but is also given the chance to grow with the characters and learn lessons from the character’s experiences.

The theme in "Boy's Life" and "Emancipation: A Life Fable", is that in having freedom, joy can be found. This is revealed in different ways, but in both, it can be discovered easily. The passages both have relatively the same general topic, since they both are about having your own freedom. The theme is revealed in plain to see ways, as demonstrated in both passages.
As mentioned in the first paragraph, I believe that I have improved my writing skills based on interpretation of writer’s pieces.

When going through life learning is an everyday occurrence as each day is constantly filled with information that is used throughout the course of your life. Each day we get stronger and stronger in whatever we decide to put our minds to, weather that be academics, sports, our jobs we are constantly learning and growing on a daily basis. This semester I have grown in English as I personally felt that through the English 102 course I have been able to grasp some key concepts and writing techniques that will better me for the future. In this class there was a list of goals and outcomes that the instructor felt would be achievable and the best way to learn throughout the course. In each goal throughout this process I feel like I have improved to some degree but there is other things that I do need to touch up on a bit more to further my writing education outside the classroom.

As we approached the due date for the first essay assignment, the professor asked us to share our introduction paragraph aloud to the class. Since I barely knew any of my peers, I found the aspect of participation terrifying at first. However after becoming familiar with my surroundings and fellow mates, I felt at ease sharing what I my thoughts and receiving positive feedback. Suchexposures have allowed me to figure out the proper writing techniques thus giving a chance for a better grade in any writing assignment. Group workshops were helpful, along with the assessment done between two other students, all of which helped me figuring out my mistakes and improve on those points later in my revision process. Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.

During this College Composition course, I came across numerous obstacles and educational involvements. Every factor of this course contributed to my overall learning experience. For starters, we often read out of our textbooks, “The Little Seagull Handbook” and “They Say I Say”. These books helped showcase proper writing techniques. In addition, we would have class discussions that everyone would participate in. This opened my eyes to different viewpoints that could influence my writing. I recall one class we had a debate over a topic and everyone had to choose a side to argue. Then when we wrote argument essays, even though they were on a different topic, it helped me view my topic in different ways. Lastly, the most helpful to my writing was peer review. We were told to read our paper out loud to our partner. Although personally I am quiet and dislike reading out loud, I found this very helpful. Instantly, my partner and I could find grammar mistakes that one may not pick up on while reading silently. Then we could also talk about other possible revisions for my paper. For every paper, we would have conferences with the professor. This was effective as well to have a professional giving corrections and ideas. When we would get back our graded rubrics on the assignments we completed, the instructor would leave comments to
