Life Orientation: Introduction My topic is an investigation into the general perception and stance of teenagers between 17 – 18 years old, regarding the way male and female sexuality is viewed by society and to determine the impact of these perceptions on the individual and society as a whole. The study will be conducted using Thomas More Pupils. I hypothesise that male and female sexuality is not be regarded equally at the moment as male sexuality is regarded as natural and a healthy part of growing up while female sexuality is taboo except in the case of child birth. Hopefully by making people aware of the gap in equality of sexuality it will transcend into other spheres of sexism and everyday discrimination. ‘Slut-shaming’ can become a thing of the past as women’s bodies will no longer be viewed solely as sexual objects. Female rape victims will not be accused of ‘asking for it’ as it becomes clear that women are entitled to casual sex but that does not make them ‘easy’ or ‘sluts’ as they are allowed to express their sexuality as they choose, but no will still mean no. And many other everyday examples of sexism will fall away due to the enlightenment on the attitude of female sexuality and hopefully this will cause a ripple effect with our generation through social media. The limitations that my topic has is that I cannot ask students to disclose their sexual habits however I can overcome this by using their general attitude toward the subject. Some may not properly understand the ‘sexuality’ I am talking about however I will make sure I am available to answer any questions and I will explain the questions fully and simply. Sexuality and Gender in Children’s Daily Worlds article by Thorne and Luria focuses on the relationships between sexuality and gender in the experience of 9 to 11 year old children. The purpose of the authors’ analysis is to illuminate age-based variations and transitions in the organization of sexuality and gender. Throughout this paper we discover how gender and sexuality has become a social and cultural construction that is expressed through young children. At a young age we tend to define and separate ourselves by gender, boys vs. girl. These divisions are enforced around us daily. For example, teachers often tend to separate team by gender whether it’s in the classroom or the playground.
In the article “An Anthropological Look at Human Sexuality” the authors, Patrick Gray and Linda Wolfe speak about how societies look at human sexuality. The core concept of anthology is the idea of culture, the systems of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors people acquire as a member of society. A major life event that started me to pursue an education in nursing was my time in basic training. The most life changing event during my induction into the army at ft. Jackson before starting basic training was accepting Christ as my personal lord and savior. When I decided to go into the Army 4 years out of high school I was a student firefighter E.M.T. working towards my paramedic, incidents at the Dept. I worked at both before and after some traumatic emergency responses actually turned me away from practicing any sort of medicine and causing me to seek the military for a new career or to pay for me to go back to school for another career if the military wasn’t my thing. During Basic training as stated above I was already a licensed E.M.T.
Sex and relationship education (SRE) is supporting children through their moral, physical and psychological aspects of growing up to be an adult, and making sure they have knowledge on relationships, sex, human sexuality and sexual health (Sex Education Forum, 2010). There are three main elements in SRE, the first element is attitudes and values, which is about developing positive values and be able to consider moral issues before they make their decisions on having intercourse (Kirby, 2007). The second element is personal and social skills, which is about teaching children to have the confidence to value themselves and others to become respectful for individual conscience and the skills to judge the kind of relationship they want; the third element is about accessing the knowledge and understanding of human sexuality, reproduction, sexual health, emotions and relationships (Kirby, 2007). The potential effect of SRE should be seen in these three areas, which includes reduction in teenager pregnancy, and the chances of getting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and being sexually assault, etc. As SRE can either be given at home to the child by parents, in school by teachers, or in youth organizations, alternative educational institutions, or youth offending organizations by Shine staffs or trained peer educators and volunteers (Levy 1992).
