Life of Pi is a book about the life of Piscine Patel or better known as Pi that mostly focuses on him being lost at sea. Life of Pi was written by Yann Martel. The book shows Pi’s transformation from being a young child to a grown man. Pi goes through many challenges that target his intellectual and spiritual self throughout this book. Many of Pi’s life has stories that are almost too unbelievable, for example he was on a lifeboat with a tiger lost at sea for many days. Pi’s character transforms based on life experience, spirituality, relationships and the author uses Pi’s faith to shift the reader’s perception of religion.

There is an interview in the story and it is being held in Pi’s home in Canada. Pi shows the interviewer the photos of his childhood. “ He taps the photo. “That’s Richard Parker,” he says. I’m amazed. I look closely, trying to extract personality from appearance. Unfortunately, it’s black and white again and a little out of focus.” (87) Back when Pi was rescued in Mexico, they told him that no tiger ever was there with him. So, we can assume that Pi makes up Richard Parker and still believes he’s real even as an adult. Pi goes against his intellect if he really did make up Richard Parker. This is yet another transformation of Pi.
Pi could have potentially made up his whole story. However, Pi still went through many transformations. He became more religious and also used his primal instincts to survive. Pi’s story is probably very unbelievable to many of the readers. He is very lucky and somehow avoids being eaten by a tiger and a hyena and being attacked by a crazy castaway.
