Kim Jong Pi heard harsh screams echoing through the grand halls to his bedroom. Screams he recognized, screams he wanted to help. These were the screams of his less talented sister being brutally whipped and tortured for not being “up to the standard”. In his eyes, anyone that didn’t reach his ridiculous standards just needed harsh punishment to become better. Flashlights shined in his eyes like he was looking at the sun. “Jesus, don't blind me,” he snapped. “Oh sorry bro,” his friends replied, strolling in. The fear of getting caught was definitely prominent. The deafening ring of the siren made Hu fall off and he hit the ground with a sickening thud. He is swarmed by guards beating him to death. In the distance he sees his dad, Kim Jong Un, looking on from his balcony with a disappointed look on his face. By now there was no way to escape because the guards had found a way to the other side of the fence. “Sorry” Pi whispers. He then proceeded to get the Negev and spray bullets down onto the guards, killing them all. He then pulled out the sniper from behind him and held it toward his dad. In North Korea life was incredibly different, and is still different, from life in America. The residents of North Korea live in extreme poverty, while Kim Jong Il and any member of Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea live as if they were kings; their meals filled with delicacies the citizens of North Korea can only dream of. Although it’s found strange to most in "normal" society, Kim Jong Il is revered as a God, because it is he who gave them all the “luxuries” in North Korea. Even though they are isolated by everyone outside of the country, they believe that their leader is their savior and that without the leader with them they can't survive. Duality reoccurs over the course of the novel through every aspect of Pi’s world view and is particularly seen in the two contradictory stories, which displays the brutal nature of the world. Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, is a fictional novel written in 2001 that explores the primacy of survival by employing symbolism, foreshadowing and motifs. This story follows the life of the protagonist, Piscine Molitor “Pi” Patel, as he embarks on his journey as a castaway. After boarding the Tsimtsum which carries Pi and his family along with a menagerie of animals, an abysmal storm capsizes the ship leaving Pi as the only survivor, though he is not alone. The great Bengal tiger, Richard Parker, also survives the shipwreck and during the 227 days that Pi and Richard Parker are stranded at sea together, the two must learn to coexist and trust one another for survival. Through Pi and Richard Parker’s struggles to remain alive, Martel explores the primal idea of survival by employing literary techniques.
