“Life Is Beautiful”, directed by and starring Roberto Benigni is a philosophical movie about the holocaust that follows the storyline of a young man by the name of Guido. Guido is a humorous man who could bring happiness to many even in the worst situations. The movies’ setting of the holocaust displays evil and death but Guido’s love for his sons innocence and positive outlook on mankind shows he can bring good even in the most dire situation In this movie it is evident that life and death are both portrayed throughout the film. An article written about the film, “Life Is Beautiful: The Lure of Evil and the Rebellion of Love”, written by Anthony C. Sciglitano Jr. explains the culture of life and death in various ways. This advice is portrayed throughout the movie, for example Dora voluntarily gets on the train although it was completely unnecessary it was almost necessary (Article). This also shows the love Dora has for her family, as she was entering the train she is shown wearing a red dress, and red could be symbolizing the sacrifice she had to make for her family. Even though she was putting herself in an unnecessary situation she was more than eager to do so because of the goodness and love she has in her heart. The Nazis philosophy is surrounded by evil due to their ideology of supreme racism, the Nazis attempted to create a world dominated by their master race. Sciglitano analyzes the Nazis philosophy and discusses how it was built on the idea that they are better than other human beings (Article). This is displayed throughout the movie by showing the Nazis yelling and dehumanizing the characters in the movie. For example they tell Guido “You have no right to speak.” (Movie). Believing that they are so powerful that he does not even have the right to say anything to them. Sciglitano also uses the Plato …show more content…
The colors are vibrant and bright, green is a common color that is shown and can be symbolizing life. Happiness, laughter, and dancing are displayed and the overall theme is joyful as Guido meets the love of his life and starts a family. As the movie continues, the setting begins to take a drastic change for the worst. Foreshadowing can take place as the colors begin to turn dull symbolizing the death and evil that the characters are about to encounter. Guido and his family board a train headed for a concentration camp, but out of the goodness of Guido’s heart he tells his son this was just a birthday surprise and that they were going to play a game (Movie). From a once happy setting to a Nazi concentration camp the filmmaker depicts the depressing truth about the horrors of the new setting by altering the theme colors. The Nazis at the concentration camp were full of evil because they obviously lacked goodness; there is power behind evil because each individual has free will (class notes). The Nazis carried out the most inhumane acts upon humankind and are perfect examples for the three subjects evil, ugliness, and death. On the other hand Guido and his family show the good in life by displaying truth, beauty, and goodness. Guido shows truth because he knows about the wicked events going on around him; he also shows beauty by being a positive and helpful person during this dark time, and lastly
By 1945 over 6 million Jews were killed as a result of the genocide launched by Nazi Germany. The Holocaust has been documented and depicted by various visual images revealing the atrocities of this tragic period. The film posters of Roberto Benigni’s Life is Beautiful produced in 1997 and Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List produced in 1993 utilize various rhetorical appeals to present starkly different visual arguments about the Holocaust. For the purpose of this rhetorical analysis, viewing these images from the standpoint of a viewer who is exposed to these posters for the first time, with the acute knowledge that these posters are related to the holocaust is necessary. From this standpoint, it is clear to see how images that depict that
Roberto Benigni, the director of Life is Beautiful (1997), explores the sacrifice of people during war . Through the use of Foreshadowing, Mood, and Characterization, film audiences are challenged to Imagine the struggles of the those in the holocaust.
The entire movie is bursting with counter narratives, when the audience believes they hold an accurate grasp on what is truly happening, there is a misguiding event, as the storyline is continually challenged. The viewer’s beginning formations about what is going on are learned to be always questionable because what is repeatedly steered to trust and is revealed not be the truth in the conclusion of the film. This neo-noir film had multiple scenarios that make the previous actions untrustworthy to the actual message. This proves that all the observations and thoughts the viewer possesses are only relevant to what they are exposed to and shown and not to what is, in fact, happening.
But through all of these images of the horror and sadness of the time period, hopes are constantly raised by the humor, and personality of Guido and the magic his character brings to the story. Riding into a hotel ballroom on a green horse, and riding away with his princess—stealing her away from her fiancé, much like the old stories from the past. In the film, the concentration camp is a playground for a young child. And in the same town that Mussolini was driving through, Guido first meets his princess.

It is unquestionably true that the real individuality, the real human nature can be revealed in extreme situations, when the human life is at stake. This work represents an attempt to show that each individual has an opportunity to change his/her life completely, to make it really humanistic and do something good even if it is the last thing he/she can do in his/her life. A Lesson Before Dying suggest the audience to reevaluate its views on life and realize that everything may be changed. At the same time, it is never late to change the life for better and reveal positive traits of character or even commit some heroic or humanistic acts even if it threatens to end the entire life of the individual.
The Bad and The Beautiful (1952) and State and Main (2000) are films within films that unmask Hollywood Cinema as a dream factory and expose the grotesque, veneer hidden by the luxury of stars. The Bad and the Beautiful, directed by Vincent Minnelli, is a black and white film narrated in flashback form. The films theatrical nature requires more close-ups than wide-screen shots to capture the character’s psychological turmoil. For example, Fred and Jonathan’s car ride is captured in a close-up to signify their friendship; however their relationship deteriorates after Jonathan’s deceit. While the camera zooms out, Fred stands alone motionless. Here, Fred is captured from a distance at eye-level and he becomes ostracized by the film industry and
Philosophy questions many ideas or statements. For example, the Examined Life asks, does life have meaning? This idea was analyzed, experienced, questioned, discussed and concluded in many different ways. There was a common thread between the Philosophy film, the Apology, our class discussions and the video, Examined life. We often ask ourselves, are we obligated to other people?

According to Jeffords, Disney changes the fairy tale in its film version of Beauty and the Beast. This film has had countless number of changes since this fairy tale first came out. One major change was inanimate objects came to life. This is a difference because in the older versions of Beauty and the Beast, the Beast is isolated in his castle and he fulfilled all of Beauty's need by enchanted magic. I believe that this change is significant in this film. This is because it takes away from the Beasts power. In the older versions this shows that the Beast really cares about Beauty and will do anything to help her fulfill her needs. In Disney's version they took this out. They made it so the Beast was less powerful, making him come off as week.
