In a world of television and tablet computers, children and teens have grown up in a technological time, and therefore have an advantage in life because they understand how to use what they are given. Though this skill helps in the workplace for those who choose to pursue careers in technology, it doesn’t help students develop other important skills that are needed after graduation. 57% of high school students participate in extracurricular activities, and these students do better in school and are better prepared for life after high school because these clubs and organizations teach them valuable skills that don’t involve a screen. Participating in school clubs helps students develop finer communication, social, and leadership skills that can later be used in everyday life, especially in the workplace.
Technology is a wonderful thing. It allows communication in an instance in any area across the world. However, because teens today use their devices to communicate more than anything, face to face human communication is becoming non-existent. Students who participate in choir must communicate with each other to set up practice times so their performance is perfect. Students in band communicate with each other so everyone starts and stops on the same note. In yearbook, those involved need to communicate with each other to make sure spreads are getting done, communicate with adults to gather outside information, be able to speak with other students to get interviews, and even speak with businesses and parents when selling ads. Student involved in sports communicate with their teammates and coaches to win a game, and students who are involved in debate club use communication skills to present an argument in such a manner that it cannot be easily
