Liam Jelley Case Study

In my role as Senior Teacher and Domain Coordinator at St Joseph's College, Geelong, I have come to know and work closely with Liam Jelley, initially as a young 13-year-old student in my class to the current day young leader of our College. In my opinion, Liam is a standout among the students I have taught and worked with.
Once you have met Liam it does not take long to recognize what a fine young person he is; his sincerity and integrity are second to none. Liam has a well-formed moral compass, that operates beyond his years; his sense of "the other" in a social justice context is exemplary. This strong sense of justice empowers him to be the voice of those less fortunate than himself, evident in his work as part of the Social Justice team

at St Joseph's College. His confidence and trust in his own abilities and beliefs stand him in good stead as a respected, young leader amongst his peers. Liam has held formal leadership roles at the College every year, culminating in his position as Deputy School Captain in this, his final year of secondary education.
Liam is mature beyond his years, allowing him to make considered links between his own place in the world and the impact this position can - and does – have on others. He demonstrates compassion and empathy and has been actively involved in advocacy and community service work within the broader community. Liam's actions support and empower others; his peers trust and respect his judgement.
A conscientious, hard-working young person, Liam has proven, particularly during his VCE studies, his ability to apply effective time management and organizational skills. He is a self-motivated learner, always keen to seek further knowledge and understanding in all areas of his studies. Liam has represented the College in many of our extra-curricular activities, seizing opportunities as they present themselves; he has represented his school at a national and international level, the latter as a lead member of the inaugural six-week Department of Education & Training Young Victorian Leaders in China study tour in 2014. This experience led to Liam spending twelve months abroad, living and studying in China.
