Observing therapy assistants in the field and seeing what they do in their jobs was an eye opener for me. Getting to experience on-the-job shadowing helped me to identify the roles of a therapy assistant better than reading or talking to people about the job description. First, I shadowed at Athletico Physical Therapy, an outpatient facility in Festus, MO. Paul Kohler is the Occupational/Hand Therapist that I shadowed during my experience. There were several different injuries that I saw, ranging from people with work related injuries to jamming fingers in machines. After observing Mr. Kohler throughout the day, I got to see him interact with patients and perform activities that helped his patients in their rehabilitation phase of recovery. He told me that the improvements he sees first hand from his patients is rewarding and he feels achieved when he sees patients make steady recoveries. The United States medical system adopted occupational therapy in the 19th century. In 1910, occupational therapy became a realized profession. Then, the main focus was working with individuals to get them to a fully functional state. Around 1930, standards of practice were developed for occupational therapists (OT’s). The career continues to evolve and change as new illnesses and disabilities arise. Even with all the changes, the main focus remains intact: helping people.
Occupational therapy has a multifaceted nature providing endless opportunities to serve a wide range of people within many environments, which is just one of the reasons I love this occupation. My long term goals enlist the desire to maximize my knowledge and abilities to care and supplement the lives of anyone that may cross my path in this career. For the last and final field assignment, I wanted to challenge myself by taking on a previous issue I have had going out on these field assignments. Since doing Field Experience I have learned a lot more material and new strategies to try out in my future field experiences and future classroom. From my teacher I have learned to explain everything clearly so students can understand the first time you explain it. Having an open classroom helps in seeing where every student is at all times, so you don’t have to worry about students hiding from you or hiding something. Having the school and classroom be colorful is a nice way to show students work and its something that students see right when they enter the school. I conducted my diverse field experience hours at Chiddix Junior High School. I had the opportunity to observe two sixth grade Spanish classes taught by Mrs. Lord. The two Spanish classes that she taught had different personalities. Her first class was more quiet and engaged in the material compared to her second class. The second class was much more talkative and would easily get off task. This may be due to the fact that her second class has gym before her class. Mrs. Lord has to travel between Kingsley and Chiddix during the day, so sometimes she would be five minutes late to class because of traffic.
