Dear Mayor Eric Adams, We have been citizens of New York our whole lives, and have lived through two, monstrous hurricanes during our time here: Sandy and Ida. We have watched the hurricanes tear apart our community and destroy peoples livelihoods and dreams. It quickly became one of the worst storms to ever hit our area. However, we have also watched the recovery and rebuilding process throughout all of this, yet we are still struggling today. Hurricane Sandy took the lives of 43 New Yorkers. Our goal is to create an exhibit where people can go to reflect on the lives of the victims affected by natural disasters, like Hurricane Sandy, and spread awareness of how destructive these storms can be. In 2021, NY was hit again by a horrific storm; Hurricane Ida. As stated in an article by the New York Times, “More than 40 people were killed by the heavy rains and flooding in the New York region”. One reason why we think building a memorial for Sandy is so important is because we want people to be better prepared for when another disaster hits. Hurricane Ida proved to us that we were just as unprepared as we were 9 years prior. Something that made Hurricane Sandy so powerful and destructive, were the conditions during the time it hit. No one saw the hurricane coming, it started off as, “A tropical wave [that left] the west coast of Africa,” (NYT) where it then traveled to Cuba and was finally deemed a hurricane. When Sandy finally hit New York, conditions were more than ideal to cause horrific flooding and destruction. The hurricane hit New Jersey first when it was high tide; it also happened to be a spring tide on this particular day. This meant that the water level was already much higher than normal. When Sandy reached NY, Mayor De Blasio had already taken the necessary precautions, but it still wasn’t enough to help protect the innocent lives
