The letter to my future selves writing process, was quite different of that than my normal process that I usually follow. Normally, I have to take multiple breaks between my points of writing because if not I will stray off topic. However, during this letter I did not stray off topic at all, and I found myself getting invested within this assignment. The reason I feel that I became so invested within this assignment is because I got to write something that relates to myself, so the content came very natural because it was my own thoughts and opinions. Although a personal statement is supposed to be mine, in the back of my head, I was thinking that an admission officer would look at this sheet of paper I had written and base my admission on it. Then I felt that although this was supposed to be my story, it was not really what I wanted to say because the purpose was to please someone else. At a certain point, all creativity was gone and my only goal was to have a perfect personal statement. The need to have a perfect personal statement did not allow me to write an essay that was truly me. I already had my mind set that I was going to write what I thought the reader wanted to hear instead of what I truly wanted. I decided, however, that although the two questions of “Is it good?” and “Does this suck?” Barry presents would haunt me for the rest of my life, if my personal statement was not truly me, then I was getting into schools for the wrong reasons. It was surprising how, for so long, I struggled writing this life-altering essay and when I just let it go, and started writing without worrying about perfectionism, I “…was both there and not there… and the lines made a picture and the picture made a story” (124). I was able to write an essay that mattered to me as opposed to something that was a misguided version of myself.

Self-regulation is a critical component in learning to write. There have been 25 studies that have shown that teaching students self-regulation strategies in writing has improved their ability to write. Self-regulation strategies have even improved writing in students with learning disabilities. So what is self-regulation in writing? In general self-regulation refers to the thoughts, feelings, and actions writers initiate to reach their writing goals. There are three types of self-regulation writers can impose to help improve their writing. They are environmental, behavioral, and personal. Taking a closer look into each of these will allow one to have a greater understanding of why self-regulation is a critical component in learning to write.
As these few tales reveal, my memories of writing are strongly connected with the intense emotions I felt as I grew up. They are filled with joy, disappointment, boredom, and pride. I believe that each of these experiences has brought me to where I am today. I can only look to the future and hope that my growth will continue, and my writing will reflect those changes within me. As a writer, I have grown immeasurably and will continue to so long as I can find some paper and a pencil.
Over the course of the semester, I have learned a lot regarding the process of writing. When comparing my open letter to my DSP, it is very clear how much this process has progressed for me. When writing my DSP, I wrote the initial draft and then edited for grammar, but not really content. When writing my open letter I made quite a few changes to content and had more rounds of revision. My process was as follows: I wrote a brief outline, then I wrote the first draft, then considering the comments that I usually make on my peers’ essays I made structural and content changes, then I sent my essay to my peers for feedback, then I made even more content changes, then I received instructor feedback, then I made even more content changes, and finally I made the final grammatical changes. “If writing didn 't require thinking then we 'd all be doing it.” (Jeremiah Laabs). Whether a person is aware of it or not, there is a process to writing that everyone goes through. I find it difficult to write essays from time to time, so I follow the writing process. The writing process is an approach to writing that involves pre-writing, drafting, and revising and editing. The writing process helps develop facts and ideas from reading about the topic to writing and editing essays.
I am writing this letter as a self-reelection after taking WR 227 with you as my Professor. Like I mentioned in my e-mail I am not exactly sure how my career field will use writing, but after taking the class I realized that whatever it may be I will have the knowledge to do so. I feel more confident in my writing ability, and knowledge of how to find any material I could use on the job. Over the last term I would say my writing has grown in that I now know how to write professionally written documents. I would say the biggest success and proudest achievement was writing the resume and cover letter. I had originally taken a class in high school that was supposed to teach a bit of professional writing, but I think WR 227 was much better.
As a seventh grade student, I took a science course because it was required. At first I was scared about how well I would do and if I would get a good grade throughout the year. When the school year started, I met my teacher and he seemed really nice and he turned out to be an awesome teacher. I excelled in my science seven class and overthrew my fear of getting poor grades. My seventh grade year was the year I determined what I wanted to go to college for and that would be life science education. As I moved up the scale throughout high school I became a better student, a better athlete, and a better leader. I had the support of my family, my teachers and my friends. This helped me achieve the major goals I had set out for myself.
...re I like to start with reading the text a few times just to get a better understanding of it this can prepare you for the planned writing. Planned writing helps point out the main points of interest .It gives you a foundation to write from. Which brings me to the final step revising helps a lot only because it gives you the opportunity to hear others opinions on what you wrote as well as you yourself reading and finding things you said in your mind but didn’t put them on paper. You use your brain every day to think so why not use your brain every day to critically think.

I believe that throughout this spring semester I believe that my writing capabilities have improved from last semester taking remedial English and has evolved even more now that I have graduated high school. I also believe that with the new methods that I have received which was using peer reviewing and using feedback to revise my essay will improve my future essays that I will need to use to improve my grades. My favorite form of writing is creative writing. My least favorite is writing a letter. The reason I prefer creative writing over the other, form is because I have the freedom to make up anything. The reason I dislike writing letter is because many letters have different formats. For example, I can’t uses the friendly letter format on a business letter; I would have to use block format. Even though I prefer creative writing, my most commonly used skill is to write essays. Though, I may find essay writing a chore, I still prefer it over letter writing. Writing in general has never been a passion or talent of mine. I have always worked very hard when given an assignment to do, but I have never enjoyed it. When I do write, I tend to find it very challenging, especially if it is a topic that I do not have interest in. Having interest in a topic is certainly the key to writing an exceptional paper if you ask me; if I don’t have enthusiasm towards a topic it shows through my writing, and my paper will not be as good as it could be. After taking Writing 102, this has been the most important realization of mine, that I write much better when I feel passionate about my topic.
Introspection can be difficult especially when one is required to do so publicly. If I am to be honest I don’t like to write although I generally like the result of what I have written. I appreciate this assignment as it forces me to look closely at my writing process, strengths and weaknesses. I especially liked the “Self-Test Obstacles” found in this module.
When I look at myself as a writer, I never knew I could write like this. From grade school to high school I never really looked at myself as a really good writer. I doubted myself whenever a teacher said, “We are beginning another big paper.” I feared writing and never really gave my writing any thought. However, as I got into college, I knew I would be assigned numerous amounts of papers. As I walked in to the English classroom the very first day of college I was scared. I thought I wouldn’t get anywhere because I thought I couldn’t write anything. Giving much thought into the whole writing process and having many people behind me is when I knew I could write something. As my writing developed many signs of weaknesses and strengths showed through.
