Nicole Hall History 101b February 14, 2015 Dear Christopher Columbus, This is Queen Isabella of Spain writing to inform you that King Ferdinand and I have upon received the letter you have written us. We must say how magnificent it is that after reading this letter of yours, since all your traveling to the world we are aware of the new land that you uphold. I must say so myself I am nothing but more than intrigued by your discoveries and I wish nothing but the best for you on other journeys you might want to encounter. Seems that when we sponsored this trip on your behalf we were assure that you would at least find what you already had in mind, that would have made a immeasurable of economic standpoints, which would have been, things …show more content…
such as, golds, spices and etc. Even though you did not prosper in any of those areas, discovering on what is called New world will be notable to be known as your first succeeding and fulling accomplishment. Even through all your trials and tribulations the fact that you still was determined to keep going to finding new lands was really impressing and I can tell by the tone of your voice that you really are nothing but more than applaud. Continuing to read the letter Kind Ferdinand and I are astonished at how you discovered these beautiful island you mention but we are more than delightful on how you went by naming them.
One of the Islands you named San Salvador, in remembrance to none other, Divine Majesty. As you continued on your journey you ran into a second island that you named Isla de Santa Maria de Concepcion, But the two that I cant wait to see is the third and fourth island , Fernandina, and Isabella. It was really an honor of having that you would name an island of yours truly. When I read that my eyes were glued to this letter I almost shed a tear, at the fact that even on your voyage have not forgotten about Ferdinand and I. Usually some people would have been selfish and like to keep discoveries to themselves but you Christopher, you are an blessing and truly good things are coming your way. Another island you found which you called Isla Juana. When you got to Juana you noticed that there was neither towns nor villages on seashore. But you still followed its coast westward. I can tell that you didn't want to stop but you could have been badly injured or sick from the weather you speak of. Sometimes trying to hurry up and getting things done can be a little hassle, and even though nothing bad had happen to you next time I would like if you take a break and slow down. But your determination has granted you on making history my …show more content…
dear. The island by the name of Espanola seem like it very beautiful, how you mention it if i'm not mistaken is look like what Spain looks like in the month of May. Which we call it summer. Next time I would like that you bring me a flower back on your token. I would love to come visit that one. I know you had to taste the fruit you recalled, is so I know that you fell in love with them I do every time I bite into one its like walking into a garden full of fresh healthy sweet fruit. You also mentioned there were people who sounds like they are in love with their own skin as to why they walk around naked. I also seen that you said these humans were harmless and they didn't have any weapons. Dont worry about why they fled that just mean they are not use to seeing other human beings and they don’t want any trouble, let them live in peace. Even though the people seem really scared I am really happy on your behavior with them, normally when others see someone run away they will try to chase them and take advantage of them but you didn't do that which i'm am impressed by.
King Ferdinand and I Queen Isabella came to the conclusion that we will pay you in full coverage if you can go out and discover more things for us, things such as gold, land, and more spices. I would love if you capture one of those people and bring them to us, if any chance you feel threatened by them do whats necessary, but do not kill and I repeat do not commit sin. So that way we would get a better understating as to who they are and why are they there. Lastly I would like to say that, if you bring to me more things you have discovered, it will brings lot of joy and wealth to the Spaniards. I will put all my trust and faith into you that you can do this, so it seems that you already have been doing so. I also remember that you said women work more than men and they share the same food. What you are witnessing is what we call house wives, where the men do all the financing and the women do all the work. I couldn’t agree with you more about our God. He who gives good things to those who wait and I assure you your time of good deeds is
now. The King himself is thrilled on your discoveries so far, but I the Queen feel that you can make this one beneficiary discovery not just for my purposes but yours as well. The King always write letters back but this one I had to take honor of because I feel some good things is about to be made. P.S thank you for all of your hard work, dedication and most importantly determination. Please come visit us sometimes or just simply write back. Hope to hear or better yet see from you soon. Sincerely Yours Truly, Queen Isabella of Spain.
King Ferdinand and Isabella are known as one of the most famous couples in the world. Isabella who was the daughter of King John II of Castile and Ferdinand was the son of King John I of Aragon were married to create unity between the two kingdoms. At the time of their marriage the spanish moors were in control of a big chunk of Spain.
These were told to me by your majesty as reasons to Columbus’s imprisonment . And i personally agree to all of this as i had went to Christopher after his first voyage to assist him , but instead he humiliated me by saying that the positions were already taken and then wanted to appoint me as a notary. But when i went there myself with permission from the king and queen , i collected lot of complaints against Diego and Cristobal, discovering they had made a bad administration, and serious abuses of authority, which ordered his arrest and transfer to Spain. In addition, it seized all assets of the Columbus brothers. For which i believe in reality I think he didn’t take me just because , i was a judge i would have banished him from the new world the moment I saw all this violation and misconduct he made with the power he possessed as the governor of the indies.
One question posed by the authors is “How did Columbus’s relationship with the Spanish crown change over time, and why?” In simple terms, Columbus’s relationship with the
Toward the end of pre-colonial times in Europe, due to the fall of Constantinople, many European nations felt the need to find an alternate route to the East Indies. The trade of rare goods such as spices, rice, exotic fruits and silk fabrics were much in demand, but came at extreme prices. In the beginning of the ‘Age of Exploration’, Portugal was in the forefront with the early explorers Henry the Navigator, Zarco and Tristao Vaz Teixeira, and Diogo Silves discovering the Madeira Islands, the Azores, and the exploration of Africa respectively, but King John the II of Portugal was unconvinced by Christopher Columbus’s pleas to fund his plan to sail West to the East Indies. Columbus made many demands for self-profit, including ten percent of any riches with which he returned, and even an ‘Admiralty’. Subsequently, Columbus took his plans to Queen Isabella of Spain. Spain acquiesced, and Columbus set off on his fateful journey. The Roman Catholic Church was very interested in expanding the Christian faith during this time and applied its influence on the monarchy. Religion also played a large personal role as Columbus truly believed that God spoke to him, and guided his hand. Additionally, at this time in Europe, land and food were at a premium. The monarchs of the era were fully aware that the acquisition of more land, slave labor and possible natural resources would greatly increase their power, prestige and subsequent wealth. After learning of Columbus’ successful return and the Treaty of Tordesillas (which divided the New World between Spain and Portugal), King Henry VII of England threw his hat into the ring and sent John Cabot sailing from Bristol on an attempt to find a shorter route to the ‘Indies’. Some of the problems when studying history are the texts and documents that have been discovered are only from perspective. Furthermore, on occasion that one perspective is all there may be for historians to study. A good example of this textual imbalance can be found from the texts about the discovery of the New World; more specifically, the letters of Christopher Columbus and Pêro Vaz de Caminha during their voyages to the New World. Plenty of the text from this time is written from the perspective of the Europeans, as the Indigenous population did not have any written text. What this means is that it provided only one perspective, which can drastically hinder how history is interpreted. Columbus’s letter of his first voyage to the Caribbean
This text was created to bring to light the hardship Natives went through during the Age of Exploration. The populous, who only hear rumors and short stories from all territories west of the Atlantic Ocean, cannot grasp the tough and difficult task that is at hand in the Americas. From these short blurbs of what is said about the west, they make inferences of what it is like, and how it is possible for another land mass to be unknown to many for so long. But for those who do know what is past the Atlantic, know that this Agenda of the King and Queen must be fulfilled and to do so would be to claim land for Spain for it to be settled upon. On top of that is to further collect the riches of the Americas to benefit Spain in the conquest of the Americas.
In 1492, Christopher Columbus was a self-made man who worked his way up to being the Captain of a merchant vessel. He gained the support of the Spanish monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, for an expedition to the Indies. With the support of the Spanish monarchy, he set off to find a new and faster trade route to the Indies. Upon the arrival of his first voyage, Columbus wrote a letter to Luis de Santangel, a “royal official and an early supporter of his venture,” in February 1493 (35). The epistle, letter, entitled “Letter to Luis de Santangel Regarding the First Voyage” was copied and then distributed in Spain before being translated and spread throughout Europe. The Letter is held in such regard with the people as it is considered the first printed description of the new world. Through his description of the nature of the islands, Columbus decided the future fate of the islands. His description of the vast beauty of the nature around him, declares both the economic and nationalistic motivations for colonizing the new world.

This voyage and all that Columbus wrote seems to have been done in greed. Columbus flattered the King and Queen repeatedly to win them over for his desired future endeavors. The first letter written to the King and Queen of Spain began immediately with overly exaggerated praise. In this matter, he could have directly addressed them with one endearing term rather than “Most Christian, High, Excellent, and Powerful Princes, King and Queen of Spain” (Halsall). He then describes his intent to “perform the embassy…discharge the orders… [and] keep an account…Sovereign Princes” as he prepares to write his journal. With this in mind, the demand of writing a journal and keeping track of his journey will keep him from sleeping and cause “many trials” all for “Your Highness.” When land was found, Columbus was the one who “bore the royal standard” when he went to shore and “took possession…for the King and Queen.
Susan Migden Socolow’s The Women of Colonial Latin America provides a comprehensive account of the varied roles of women in the colonial societies of Spanish and Portuguese America, spanning the three centuries between the conquests of the late-fifteenth century and the commencement of independence in the early-nineteenth century. Professor Socolow writes that “the goal of this book is to examine these [gender] roles and rules and thus understand the variety and limitations of the female experience in colonial Latin America” (1) and manages to carry this argument clearly and convincingly throughout the work. She argues that the patriarchy, Iberian patriarchy in particular, was encompassed in the church, laws, and traditions of colonial society
In our personal lives we consider our past forgotten, however in our history everyone affects how they see themselves. "history repeats itself " is gradually long time we know manipulated and deceived us the wrong information, books, learning in school, the "biased" report before the newspaper, radio and television. Let us move on and we just solemn pray for that will prosper in our country. I noticed that there have been distortions in our history. It’s sad because it seems like we have forgotten the sacrifices of those who died during the time of dictatorship. This tragedy cannot continue. We should stand up for someone’s rights today. Times have changed. More sooner than later, they will take power into their hands by all and whatever
After reading the two letters written by Christopher Columbus in the midst of his many voyages, I have found many similarities and differences between the two. The first letter was written to Luis de Santangel on February 15, 1493 at sea. Ten years later, the second letter was written to Ferdinand and Isabella. This letter, regarding his fourth voyage, was written on July 7, 1503. The tone in this letter compared to the first letter was abysmal. Some did not believe it was written by the same person. This makes what happened in that ten year gap become very important. It is what happened during that time that will lead one to discover the changes in attitude made by Columbus between the two letters he wrote.
The Letter to Santangel by Christopher Columbus proved to be invaluable in many respects because of its description and detailed account of Columbus's discoveries. This letter written after a monumental time in history was rare but provided information that delved into Columbus's intentions, his audience, his beliefs, and his expectations of the New World. Lastly, the letter is also useful as a primary source in history to contextualize Columbus's discovery in 1492 though bias, it is valuable to read from the individual himself.
After over six years of proposals to multiple nobles around Europe, Columbus found Queen Isabella and Kind Ferdinand of Spain who offered to fund the voyage, and on Augu...
This is an analysis of Christopher Columbus’s Letter on His First Voyage on page 381. Christopher Columbus wrote a letter to his King and Queen of Spain, while he was in the West Indies. He wrote this letter in February 1493 reflecting on his voyage across the Atlantic in 1492. After reading this letter, I can tell that Columbus felt like he was better than the native people of the different islands he journeyed and that a lot of things they did were very strange to him. I can also tell that the world was a lot different to him and to people in 1492, than it is to people in 2014 because he referred to the native people of the various islands he traveled to as Indians, whereas most people in 2014 know that India and Latin American are not the
