Letter From Mendel Dear Dad,
I’ve been in the Monastary discoving the basic of genetics. I’ve been
experimenting with my garden peas for the past couple of years. The
organisms that are used as the original mating in an experiment (tall
and short plant) are called the parental generation in abbreviation is
the P generation which stands for parent. When I mated the two
offsprings in the p generation, the offsprings are in the F1
generation. When I breed the F1 generation I ended up with the F2
generation. For the F1 generation I selected a six foot pea plant and
a short pea plant and crossed them. In the F1 generation I noticed
that all the offspring were tall and didin’t even show short. In the
F2 generation I crossed 2 tall pea plants and noticed that ¾ of the

We start off with hearing about a nineteen year old, Roy Hobbs, baseball superstar getting shot in a shooting accident which damaged his career. Then we skip to the failing New York Knights who just moved up a thirty- four year old ballplayer, Roy Hobbs, signed for only $3,000, Roy eventually becomes a mega superstar after the death of the old team superstar, Bump Bailey. Roy ends up falling in love with Bump’s old girlfriend, Memo Paris. Roy goes through a slump and one game a girl stand up for him in the stands when no one else would. Roy hit a homerun to end his dry spell. He likes this girl, Iris Lemon, but not more than Memo. Roy pleads with the owner of the team, the Judge, for more money. The Judge says no, but tells Roy if he throws away the game to win the pennant he will give him $35,000. Roy agrees, but in the end tries to win the game back failing miserably. He strikes out after breaking the only bat he was good with, Wonderboy. After the game he meets the Judge, and throws the money in his face. They fight, and eventually Roy is seen as a loser for throwing the game. In the novel, The Natural, by Bernard Malamud the author conveys that decisions made through selfishness and without consent of a moral code lead to major consequences in one’s life.
Rigoberta Menchu, a Quiche Indian woman native to Guatemala, is a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for politically reaching out to her country and her people. In her personal testimony tittled “I, Rigoberta Menchu” we can see how she blossomed into the Nobel Prize winner she is today. Following a great deal in her father’s footsteps, Rigoberta’s mobilization work, both within and outside of Guatemala, led to negotiations between the guerillas and the government and reduced the army power within Guatemala. Her work has helped bring light to the strength of individuals and citizen organization in advocacy and policy dialogue on the world scale. In a brief summary of the book I will explore why Rigoberta Menchu is important to Guatemalan development, what she did, and how she helped her people overcome the obstacles thrown their way.

Life on a plantation was harsh.People lived in crowded sheds with no clean water or toilets. Your people, the native Indians in Guatemala had no rights of citizenship. You were restricted to people of Spanish descent and were, therefore, vulnerable to abuses by those in power."We are living in a troubled world, in a time of great uncertainty.
“I, Rigoberta Menchu, an Indian Woman in Guatemala” (1983), is the personal narrative of the life of a young Guatemalan Quiche Indian woman. Written in the genre of personal testimony, Menchu's powerful voice records the hardships of the Guatemalan people during the political terror of a 36-year Civil War that ended in 1996. Menchu's reality is harsh; life is a struggle to survive. Menchu as if creating an indigenous cloth with numerous threads, creates a tale of connection within her Quiche community. One of Menchu's main objectives is to maintain a cohesive Mayan culture and to bring cultural identity to her community. Menchu records her culture's past through memory, detailing rituals, customs, and traditions. She presents the Mayan culture with a sense of wonder and mystery. She speaks of candles lit to welcome the newborn children, of celebratory fiestas at weddings, of the importance of maize, and of respect for the elders of the community. Menchú promotes cultural identity of her people and encourages it for those other indian an indigenous nations around the world. The rituals she describes are alien and very different to the Western mind.
Galileo Galilei was an Italian scientist, often referred to as “the father of modern physics”. He was one of the inventors of the telescope and a strong proponent of Copernicanism. Galileo used his invention to make astronomical observations which supported Copernicus’ heliocentric model of the universe. These discoveries led to a fierce dispute, because they contradicted the theory which was prevalent at the time – that the universe followed a geocentric model, a theory, which had been accepted by the Catholic Church. To address this dispute, Galileo wrote a letter to Tuscany’s Grand Duchess Christina, in which he presented his position on the relation between science and religion, stating that the Bible does not contradict science.

Now we are closer to mapping out the human genetic map due to advances in technology, and years and years of research. Perhaps the most influential and groundbreaking scientist, Gregor Mendel, he was responsible to provide a path to where genetics is now today with his experiments of garden peas.

In Drosophila (fruit flies) genes can be linked or non-linked. Linked genes are genes that are close together on the chromosome so they often appear in pairs. Non-linked genes are not close together and Mendel’s law of Independent Assortment states that each trait is equally likely to slow up. The purpose of this lab is to find out if the genes of purple eyes and black bodies are linked in Drosophila. Flies are good for this experiment because they display a number of different traits and they mate quickly. If the eye and body color genes are linked in Drosophila then the F2 generation will not have a 9:3:3:1 ratio because the genes are on the same chromosome and cannot independently assort when they are crossing over. Since linked genes often appear in pairs, it is likely that there will be many more flies that are wild-type for both genes or have purple eyes and a black body than a combination of these genes. If the eye and body color genes are not linked in Drosophila then the F2 generation would have a 9:3:3:1 ratio because the law of independent assortment states that each gene has an equal chance of occuring.

In your post I don’t fully agree with what you said. With the new chapter that we read we can give an educated guess on why people act the way they do. “I do not understand it. You members of the community will not understand it, either. Perhaps Jonas will, because the current Receiver has told us that Jonas already has this quality. He calls it the Capacity to See Beyond" (Lowry 64). The “Capacity to See Beyond” and Jonas’ job of Receiver of Memory’s makes me wonder if the Receiver of Memory’s keeps all the things like animals

In the novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George Milton had to make this tough decision. George is friends with a mentally disabled man named Lennie Small. Lennie pushes George to his limit many times, but he stays by Lennie’s side throughout the book because they are the only true friend they have.
