“Let’s Impeach the President” is a protest song written by Neil Young in 2006 regarding President George W. Bush. Neil Young usually writes songs that aren’t super easy to understand on the first listen and are cryptic, but he took a different approach to this song and was very straight forward. Young wanted listeners to understand exactly what he was saying, as this was a very important topic for him. He believed that President Bush should have been impeached and that there were plenty of valid reasons to do so, which he would go on to list in the song. He also believed that Bush was not telling the full truth of why he was sending troops into war and was making up stories, and eventually led to the large number of dead and wounded US soldiers. A big controversy during the Bush administration that Young hit on in verse three was President Bush using his position of power to spy on citizens. During his presidency, Bush secretly got the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on US citizens for evidence of any sort of terrorist activity. He did this without getting warrants approved by the court, which is why Young went on to say, “Breaking every law in the country”. When doing this, Bush had international calls and emails monitored and used it as evidence for some people’s arrest. Young wrote about this as it is a big violation of privacy, because Bush did not go through the right protocols and illegally “tapped” people’s phones and computers. In verse four Young began to talk about domestic issues, the first of which being the repercussions of Hurricane Katrina.
