Debate continues to who should be credited with inventing the telephone. In 2002, even the US Congress succumbed to the truth and “changed its mind” on the issue gave credit to the real inventor and rewrote history that the original telephone was in fact invented by Antonio Meucci. I came into this class under the impression that I already wrote well enough and wouldn’t need to improve. However, as I progressed through the semester I learned that there is always room to grow. The first paper I produced was not at the level I was hoping but after I actively decided to improve my writing my papers became much better. Looking back on my work in the class I wonder how much my writing has changed and where I still have room to improve. Without evaluating my work I can’t hope to become any better. Through this class I have grown much as a writer but there is still more I can learn.

Turning to the government did not help because government policies were making the credit problems worse. The severe economic downturn was going to cause political and social changes which lasted for decades beyond the end of the depression in 1879. The Panic of 1873 resulted in labor unrest, violent strikes, political upheaval, huge concentrations of wealth, and desperate migrations to Indian-populated parts of the West, and ended the Reconstruction-Era protections for blacks in the South.
