In the book The Odyssey, Odysseus is a very good example of how sacrifice contributes more to heroism than success. In the Odyssey, when he is trapped at Calypso's island he states that “By nights he would lie beside her, of necessity, in the hollow caverns, against his will, by one who was willing, but all the days he would sit upon the rocks, at the seaside, breaking his heart in tears and lamentation and sorrow as weeping tears he looked out over the barren water.” (5.154-158). In reality, he states that he just wants to go home because he does not like being trapped and also in this chapter was where he was told he had to sacrifice six of his men to the six-headed monster they were going to face on their way home. Odysseus wanted to tell him men but he did not want to freak them out, going back to say that sacrifice is more heroic than success. In life, people make plenty of sacrifices for other human beings for example, when your mother has to drop out of
“The greatest sacrifice is when you sacrifice your own happiness for the sake of someone else.” Sacrifice does not come easy, but one sacrifice can inspire many as seen in the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Over the years many have stated that the sacrifices the Mirabal sisters undertook in order to achieve social change, was not worth the effort. From a certain perspective, this may be true, since the Mirabal sisters took many risks and sacrifices ranging from Minerva sacrificing her own child, to sacrificing their own lives in an attempt to achieve equality. However, upon an in-depth analysis, one can observe that the brave sacrifices the sisters risked to achieve social change far outweigh the latter.
In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, his character, Rebecca Nurse, helps portray the theme of religion by dying a martyr of her faith and being the purest and saintliest character hung for witchery. When Rebecca was asked by Governor Danforth to confess to witchcraft she replied, “Why it is a lie, it is a lie; how may I damn myself? I cannot, I cannot.” (IV) Rebecca’s response to Governor Danforth displays her clear trust in her faith. Her reassurance is apparent in this statement because knows she just sentenced herself to death, but also sent herself to the Kingdom of Heaven. Rebecca’s confidence in her beliefs is noticeable when she says, “Let you fear nothing! Another judgment waits for us all.” (IV) This shows that Rebecca sees life and everything in life as temporary, and life after death as eternal. She knows she is making the right decision by telling the truth, and she is content with the consequences.

New Wark or New York A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens is a story of great sacrifices being made for the sake of principle. There are many examples of this throughout the book made by many of the characters, but some more evident than others. In Book The First, entitled “Recalled to Life,” the most obvious sacrifice for the sake of principle was made by Dr. Manette. He was imprisoned for eighteen years in the Bastille, for no apparent reason.

Bishop Bienvenu’s influence on Jean is similar to that of a father’s influence on his son. Bishop Bienvenu’s influence is critical to the start of Jean’s life after prison. The Bishop was the only person that would shelter Jean for that long first night. During the night Jean stole his silver wear. Instead of being angry, the Bishop confirms Jean’s story and gives him the silver candlesticks too. ‘“Jean Valjean, my brother, you no longer belong to evil, but to good. I have bought your soul, that it may not be lost.”’(26). The Bishop’s Influence on Jean will stay with him for the rest of his life.
In the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by John Irving, the character Randle McMurphy is depicted as larger-than-life and as someone who just enjoys living despite being committed to a mental institution. Initially he stood out from the other patients, as he was laughing and very joyous. Although seemingly different, he soon made friends with a large group of those in the institution, even with the story’s narrator Chief Bromden. Irving emphasizes McMurphy’s sacrifice of his life in order to convey how he values individuality and personal freedom, but also taking risks in order to exemplify the overall message that one should live life to the fullest.
“It is precisely of him that I wished to speak. Dispose of me as you please; but help me first to carry him home. While some people in the town of La Porte thought that Belle died in the fire, many others disagreed. There were numerous sightings of Belle in town the three days following the fire. People claimed that she was wearing two veils, one of them black, in order to hide her identity. She was also seen with an unknown man. This was reported because in the small town of La Porte, everyone knew everyone and noticed very easily when visitors occupied their town.
Indeed, the pioneer aviator and author Anne Morrow Lindbergh puts it best when she says, “to give without any reward, or any notice, has a special quality of its own” In Charles Dickens’s A Tale of two Cities, Dickens shows the inherent goodness of his characters. By exemplifying various acts of sacrifice, he demonstrates that the character’s gifts ultimately bring about great change, often changes that facilitate the revival of their loved ones. The very first signs of sacrifice are noted in the opening scenes of the book. Dickens writes of a “fated revolution” by metaphorically comparing the woodsman and the forester to the creation of the guillotine.
A simple definition of sacrifice is to give up something for the sake of something else, whether it is for another human life, for an idea, or even for a belief. “She was 17 years old. He stood glaring at her, his weapon before her face. ‘Do you believe in God?’ She paused. It was a life-or-death question. ‘Yes, I believe in God.’ ‘Why?’ asked her executioner. But he never gave her the chance to respond. The teenage girl lay dead at his feet.” (DC Talk 17) This example of a sacrifice really happened at Columbine High School in Littleton, CO, on April 20, 1999. In the story Iphigenia and in today’s society, justification can be found in favor of the sacrifice of life for the lives of others, for the sake of one’s country, and for one’s religious beliefs.
