Introduction
An American poet, Katha Pollitt, once said,“ Abortion is part of being a mother and caring of children, because part of caring for children is knowing when it’s not a good idea to bring them into the world.” Knowing that a child is not going to make out in society today is more harmful then aborting a fetus that is not developed. Abortion is not something women should be ashamed about nor should they be judged by their choices they make. Not only are women being discriminated in America for their choice in having an abortion but also in other countries around the world. According to the Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat, “The Afghanistan Criminal Code of 7 October 1976 stipulates that the performance of an abortion is a criminal offense except to save the life of the mother. A person performing an illegal abortion is subject to imprisonment or payment of a fine. If the person performing the illegal abortion is a medical doctor, surgeon, pharmacist or nurse, he or she is subject to the maximum anticipated punishment for the crime. A woman who induces her own abortion or consents to its being induced is subject to a short term of imprisonment or payment of a fine.” (Pg.17) If a woman gets pregnant through rape or incest in the United States, it is legal unlike Afghanistan. Even though abortion is illegal in Afghanistan, more women are having abortions. The price rate of abortions has gone up. A nurse in Kabul Karte Se district, Karima says that if abortion was legalized in Afghanistan, the process of abortion would be much safer. Most of the women that goes to Karima’s clinic are women that has boyfriends, women who have drug-addicted husbands and couples who are too poor to take care of a child.
