As a bookworm, I’m always looking for new books, and especially now that it’s the start of the year I’m about to find a whole new set of novels to power through this year. But before I do, here are my top three picks for the Summer Holidays! If you love reading or despise it, there’s something here for everyone to enjoy.
Learning to Swim by Annie Cosby:
This book was a lovely story that had something for everyone. The characters were interesting, and very witty, which gave the story a nice twist to other novels. With a strong main female character, you will be intrigued by her story.
Learning to Swim is a fantasy romance novel based around Scottish/Irish Selkie legends. Not only did this book fascinate me, it also surprised. The novel went

I've never read something like this before. One of the highlights of the novel was that it wasn't primarily focused on romance, like many books in this category. Earth had substance and its romantic subplot suited the rest of the book wonderfully. I loved the relationships between the main characters and their realistic qualities.
As you may have noticed, especially in the Young Adult genre, many books are told from two or more perspectives. As this technique has become increasingly popular, I've started to find it annoying, but Frances did this perfectly. She manages to create a different writing style for each character which made Mattie and Marduke special in their own ways. This is something that has never been done so well before until Earth. Jessica's writing style was intriguing and unique and I commend her for this.
I plan on picking up the next one in the series, as should you!
Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell:
Eleanor & Park is a beautifully devastating novel about two teen misfits. Unlike stereotypical relationships in books, Eleanor and Park are no regular match. Eleanor, the chubby girl with flaming red hair and Park, the tall, comic book enthusiast from around the corner. The two don’t get off to a great start. But throughout the book Eleanor and Park grow
I am reading tides of war blood in the water by Alexander London. It's about a navy seal who is a dolphin trainer. The book started with him and his brother are surfing and his brother got palled under by a shark and Cory the older brother help him get top. So far the book is really good.
Fans of the novel found that the way the novel is written, you never want to put it down and the action keeps things moving and is quite entertaining. The novel pulls you in and makes you love each of the main characters in it. This is a great series for anyone to read, and it is audience friendly for whoever reads them. There is quite a bit of suspense that will make the novel exceed readers 's expectations, and the twists and turns keeps you guessing and lets nothing be predictable. Some like the way this group of people bands together when they really need to and keep things together so they can all stop the
Throughout “A&P” and “Gryphon” the two characters found themselves facing a challenge that they had never had to face before. Reading both of the stories has shown that although different adversities were represented in the books they both had challenges and reactions that were similar to each other as well as very different. Sammy’s was about a store called “A&P” where the manager confronted three girls in bathing suits and Sammy had to stand up for them. Tommy’s was about a unique substitute teacher who he quite enjoyed and his journey with her, and his defending her to the other kids when one of the children gets her fired. Together and separately these two dynamic characters make up these unique stories that ensnared their reader with their thoughts, adversity and heroic actions throughout the story.
The points of view in “A&P” and “A Rose for Emily” show the fascination that people have with those in the upper class. Updike writes in the first person point of view. The narrator is Sammy, a cashier at the grocery store. Queenie, who walks around the A&P in only a bathing suit, fascinates him. Updike writes, “She had on a kind of dirty-pink… bathing suit with a little nubble all over it and, what got me, the straps were down.” (Updike, 2). He describes the girls in great detail throughout the story, obviously studying them. This first-person point of view shows the thoughts of Sammy, who is a member of the middle class. His fascination with Queenie is exemplary of the average person’s fascination with the rich. Sammy analyzes Queenie so much that he feels a particular connection to her, thinki...
My overall opinion of this book is good I really liked it and recommend it to anyone. It is a good book to read and it keep you interested throughout the whole book.
This is my personal reflection about this book. First and foremost, I would like to say that this book is very thick and long to read. There are about nineteen chapters and 278 pages altogether. As a slow reader, it is a quite hard for me to finish reading it within time. It took me weeks to finish reading it as a whole. Furthermore, it is written in English version. My English is just in average so sometimes I need to refer to dictionary for certain words. Sometimes I use google translate and ask my friends to explain the meaning of certain terms.
In the stories written by John Updike and Jamaica Kincaid, both are completely different in terms of plot and the manner in which each were written, however through the elements of character and theme, the two can be closely associated to one another. By looking further into stories one will find that there is usually more than what meets the eye as illustrated in “Girl” and “A&P.”
I think my favorite thing about this novel was the realistic ending. Some books try to just give you a fairy tale but this book had an ending that mad you think in the end if I was in the same position would I do the same thing. I didn’t like the fact that the novel portrayed mental illness in a way to say that it needed to be hidden and protected. I thought this novel was very believable for the time period that it was set in. I think the ending to this novel was perfect it was an accurate ending to this
I have spent much of my free time this semester reading and analyzing three novels for my English class. One book in my opinion stands out among the others. The three books had some similarities between them, but the books also had quite a few differences. Through those similarities and differences I have concluded that Hatchet is by far my favorite. It was also the easiest to follow and in a weird way relate to.
...ies or extracurricular activities, the kind of competition that Lia and Cassie undertook was something I could relate to, though it may not be as extreme. Furthermore, I liked how the author didn’t show or tell in this book. She used the strikethrough feature to allow the readers to infer both the outer and inner meaning that the characters may represent. For example, to introduce Emma, Lia’s stepsister, the author stated “My stepsister, Emma…” (Anderson 3). This feature was very distinctive to the author’s style, something I have never seen before.
All the novels that I have read in class this year have been absolutely fascinating and remarkable. Each one captivated me in an indescribable way. However, there is a particular novel that stood out to me. It is a novel that is highly enjoyable and I recommend it to anyone looking for a poetic and simple book to read. That novel is One Crazy Summer by the distinguished author of books for children and teens, Rita Williams-Garcia.
*All in all I would say that this novel is definitely a good read. I found my self at times relating my own thoughts and experiences to that of the characters in the book. This is the very reason I would recommend that you give your class next semester the option of reading either this book or another. From my point of view, I think that most men can not relate to certain situations that occur, which lessens the overall significance of her writing.
Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”. According to Martin Luther King Jr., if there is injustice anywhere, it affects the chance of having justice. Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell is about a girl who comes from a family with an abusive stepfather who recently kicked her out of the house for a year. On the first day of school, she takes the bus to school and is immediately bullied by everyone except for a boy named Park. As time goes by, they start developing feelings for each other and fall in love.
This book is different then other books I have read because, usually I don’t get to pick out a book to read, it is usually assigned to me, so when I started to read a book that interests me, I thought I would be intrigued. I enjoyed reading this book at times, but I felt it was a hard book to get in to.
I highly recommend this book to anybody who likes a romantic love story, or anybody who likes to see people succeed after going through some tough times and overcoming obstacles that they have faced. The novel is well written, fairly easy to read, and overall a great book.
