What are learning styles people may ask? Well most people know it by just a system that groups an individual on how well they would learn using visual, auditory, reading and writing, or kinesthetic methods. These are the main learning techniques but to understand that all people use these methods the learning styles to help them individually to find out what are their strength and weaknesses in those areas. For an adolescent they could gain this knowledge to help them learn; they could access their strengths and work on their weaknesses. This theory challenges the idea of an educational system that expects that all adolescents are able to learn in the same way as any other adolescent. Having the educational system have this type of perspective pertaining to all adolescents learning neglects the understanding in whether these adolescents have a difference in intelligence strengths and weaknesses. In Sternberg’s case, he focuses on three main learning styles, which consist of having an analytical, practical, or creative approach on certain topics. While Gardener establishes that there are eight forms of intelligence that consist of verbal, mathematical, spatial, bodily kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and natural approaches. For example, I would come up with different assignment that incorporate a different aspects of the learning styles and make it give off a more intrinsic feeling. I can ask my future classes to help develop the ideas for assignments so I will be giving them an appealing aspect to the assignments. This reminds me of the time when I was a student in high school and one of my teachers ask us as a class to help incorporate ideas to the assignment she will be giving us. With this experience, it helps me become more immersed in the material she was covering and I gain the motivation of wanting to actually do the assignment then just doing it for a grade. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” The two articles “Hidden Intellectualism” and “Blue Collar Brilliance” both emphasis the author's opinion on the qualifications and measurements of someone's intelligence. “Hidden Intellectualism” focuses on students or younger people who have trouble with academic work because, they are not interested in the topic. When Gerald Graff was younger he and his friends would have various debates about sports including what team had the best pitcher in baseball. Graff pointed out that while having these arguments with his friends, they would have evidence to support their thoughts whether it be using statistics to find batting averages or using their argumentative abilities in general to support their opinion. This proves that even people who do not do the best in school are capable of brilliant things, the school system just needs to encourage students to use their hobbies to enhance their academics. Instead of dividing the different forms of intelligence, book and street smarts could merge and grow into a more detailed educational system that can help not just with academics, but with life itself. While it is good to know proper grammar, knowing about dating, sports, or cars can actually get people farther than anticipated in life. The purpose of the Myers-Biggs Type Indicator personality type is to make the philosophy of psychological indicators defined by C.G Jung comprehensible and beneficial to people. On the other hand, several people realize that every individual prefers diverse learning styles and methods, which is the common way of learning. According to Howard Gardner, to lengthen the learning ability of people, more cognizance needs to be given to different learning style that people will prefer to receive data. There are different types of personality indicator and learning styles, but based on this assignment, I am going to describe two personality types and three learning styles.
Laurence Steinberg’s “What's Holding Back American Teenager” an article introduced on the eleventh of February two thousand fourteen to inform the reader that our education system is failing. Steinberg received his B.A. in Psychology from Vassar College and his Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Cornell University. The education system is causing students to not value education and the positive aspects it brings along with it. Steinberg believes the point in time where students start to perform poorly in school, is high school, because he believes we are not challenging the students to want to thrive education. In Steinberg’s article he aims to convince the reader through Logos that America’s education system is failing for high school students and the solution to the problem is to challenge our students.
Do schools and colleges help students to develop fully their intellectual abilities? In the book They say I say, Gerald Graff, a professor who is one the coauthors of this book stated the importance of putting street smarts into academic work. He assumed that schools and colleges must take chances to exploit students’ hidden intellectual abilities. Through his own adolescent experiences, on intellectual vision, he believed that getting street smarts into academic education would bring better results in the real intellectual world. Moreover, having new experiences on nonacademic subjects helps students get more attentions and decrease tediousness.
According to the textbook, “learning styles refer to the ways in which and conditions under which learners most efficiently and most effectively perceive, process, store , and recall what they are attempting to learn” (p.122). People have different learning style depending on how each person learn best based on interest and situation they are under. I am personally more visual and sensory in practical world than the theoretical matter. However, I can manage to learn both ways depending on what kind of information I am gaining and how it is presented to me. I have to be ready to learn and should be somehow interested on the information I am about to receive or in the process of receiving. Traditional theories of intelligence do not account for the ambiguity of classes such as philosophy or for the wide range of interests a child can have. For example, contemporary theories such as Sternberg’s Theory of Intelligence and Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences both account for more than the general intelligence accounted for in traditional intelligence theories. According to Ben Michaelis, a person 's intelligence is not measured by how well they perform academically, but by how well they adapt to their situations and environment (Michaelis). The idea that students who attain outstanding grades in school are more intellectual than students who receive poor grades is unfair to all students. In 1983, Dr. Howard Gardner identified different types of intelligence, including interpersonal intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence, and musical intelligence (Fiero), so to assume that a person is unintelligent based on poor academic performance is unreasonable. In the article, “What Does it Mean To Be Smart?”, the author gives an example of a woman named Angie to demonstrate that academic intelligence is not the main indication of someone’s overall intelligence (Michaelis). Although she did not excel in an academic setting, she had the ability to adapt to her circumstances and capitalize on her talents and interests to create a successful career for herself (Michaelis). A big component of my learning style is hands-on experience; learning while doing. This usually involved someone with more experience instructing me as I performed the task. Through the hands-on approach, I picked-up the knowledge and gained proficiency as I went along. My learning style also involved standard classroom instruction, which usually meant listening to lectures and taking notes. My note taking was not the best so in order to make up for what I lacked in note taking, I would read the textbooks repeatedly until I understood what I was reading. Learning styles are how individuals approach learning new concepts based on their strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. Acquiring and being aware of your learning styles is beneficial to accurately processing information that could be used for intellectual growth. Furthermore, learning styles are a part of how humans function and receive information from their world, so not being properly informed about this concept could bloom confusion, dysfunction, and chaos in society. Each learning style has a different goal and approach in interpreting information based on each individual’s abilities and should be regarded as being such. Nowadays, children are told to take a quiz in school to determine what their preferred learning style is, but after a few years, not many of these children remember what their preferred learning style is, or even if they do, they don’t apply it to their learning.
Adjusting learning and studying strategies can be a fast easy way to improve a college grade from a B to an A. Through studies of learning styles I have been able to decipher my learning types. I am a visual learner, have an integrated brain, meaning I use both hemispheres, and ranked highest in bodily-kinesthetic and logic-mathematical intelligence.
Everyone has different learning styles. Learning styles are important because they help you better understand materials in classes. They are there to guide you and become a better student. Learning styles help you better grasp the material and better process it through your brain. When learning you want to do what is most beneficial for you. That is why there is many different learning styles to suit every person. There is three different types of learning styles categorized. The first learning style is auditory. Auditory is meant for individuals that enjoy asking questions, talking and listening, as well as like to read out loud. Visual learners are more interested in charts, graphs, neat surroundings, seeing rather than hearing, and are pictured to be timid as they read to themselves rather than out loud. Finally there is the kinesthetic learning style. Kinesthetic is to touch, to feel, and usually learn by doing.
Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
