According to the textbook, “learning styles refer to the ways in which and conditions under which learners most efficiently and most effectively perceive, process, store , and recall what they are attempting to learn” (p.122). People have different learning style depending on how each person learn best based on interest and situation they are under. I am personally more visual and sensory in practical world than the theoretical matter. However, I can manage to learn both ways depending on what kind of information I am gaining and how it is presented to me. I have to be ready to learn and should be somehow interested on the information I am about to receive or in the process of receiving. The two best ways to assess the learning needs of my clients are collecting data (patient history, questions, and needs) from the patients themselves and by involving the members of the healthcare teams. The first step is collecting data about the patient and question such as the following is helpful according to the text book; “the health professional educators can as the patients as learners as following: what do you think caused your problem? How severe is your illness? What does your illness/ health mean to you?” (111). Patients themselves are one of the first and the best resources for assessment in order to find out how they want to learn. I need to give a chance for my clients to tell me what the best way for them to learn. This helps clients to find out their own problem comfortably and give me the best way to find out their learning needs. The second step is involving the members of healthcare teams on assessing the clients understanding on best way to learn. Other healthcare providers other than you might have better insight on finding the best way patients or clients need to learn as a result of frequent contact of patients and healthcare providers. Other than that collecting data from health care association’s also important sources to learn how to find out learning needs of patients. Using different resources such as the patients themselves, Major factors that are barriers to assessing my patients learning in healthcare are literacy, culture, language, and physiological barriers.
It is up to the healthcare professionals to assess and evaluate the patient's learning needs and readiness to learn because everyone learns differently. Healthcare is very sensitive industry because human life is attached to it. Barriers during teaching patients or learning for patients might cost life and law suite. For example, if the patient is sick, the probability for the client to have the interest to learn is unlikely. Therefore, I have to ask the patient what he needs and what interest him from other healthcare professional around. By doing so, I can increase the interest of the client/patient to learn the information I am looking to provide him/her/them. Therefore, by gathering important information from the patients how best they prefer to receive the information and involving other health care team on finding out the effective way of the information can be productive are the best way to overcome the barriers of learning in healthcare

Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of repeated experience (Sims & Sims, 1995). Understanding one’s learning style has many advantages as it can help one to identify the learning method or activities that can help to optimise the learning experience. It has been suggested that the importance of one’s learning style has been identified through studies and research on how one can maximise the potential for success and further learning development (Honey & Mumford, 2006). Learning styles are unique to each individual and are developed in childhood (Chase, 2001). We all have different personalities; therefore we all have preferred learning styles that suit us best. The way one learns depends on preference. Some learn by observing, listening and imitating others and draw conclusions from their experience. There are several factors that affect our learning style; for example, background, culture, religion and environment can have a major influence on one’s learning.
The term learning styles is based on the assumption that individuals differ in regards to what mode of instruction is most effective for them. Educational practitioners have long stressed that optimal instruction requires diagnosing these individual styles and designing instruction accordingly. To determine the best way I learn, I carried out two different learning styles questionnaires online. One may find that they are not always categorised in a specific type rather they may have more than one learning preference. Firstly, the most commonly used Neil Fleming’s VARK model. My learning style is Physical (Kinesthetic). I prefer using my body, hands and sense of touch. My Learning style guides the way I learn.
