Is E-Sport A Real Sport?
All tickets for the League of Legends World Championship finals are sold out within an hour, making a profit of $1.6 billion in revenue for 2016. (1) With the Los Angeles’ Staple Center sold out and thousands of fans eager to watch the two final teams compete for the world cup and a prize pool of $5.07 million;(2) e-sports are not considered a sport by mainstream sport media when it should be. There are many similarities between e-sports and traditional sports, one of the things that I would argue is the most critical in sports is that to be successful you must invest a lot of personal time to stay on top of your game. E-sports, specifically League of Legends has been gaining recognition in the recent years by major league sports team players. Former NFL player Chris Kluwe has an interview where he talks about the similarities he has found in playing professional football and playing League of Legends. (17) Another former major league athlete, Rick Fox, who used to play for the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers has bought a League of Legends team formally known as Gravity Gaming and rebranded as Echo Fox for the North American League of Legends Championship Series. A current Boston Celtic player, Jonas Jerebko also bought his own e-sports team, the Renegades who are a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive team.
