Leadership is a broad topic that is often times obscure and puzzling to scholars and students alike. The future of leadership resides within institutions that seek to provide prospective leaders with the necessary knowledge to bring about progressive social change. Today, the problems that leaders are confronted with require the application of theoretical knowledge to real life situations. Leaders learn about themselves by seeking leadership opportunities in environments that do not give them a title, but rather the opportunity to practice their learned leadership theory among a diverse group of people in varying situations. College campuses are the ideal place for student leaders to recognize their strengths and leadership potential.

I now focus my philosophy on the idea that a leader becomes a leader through mastery of skills, not by being born a natural leader. The first step to mastering leadership skills is having a foundation of leadership theory. I feel that once one is introduced to the dense, contradicting leadership theories it becomes easy to apply the teachings in actual life situations. The theories presented simultaneously question and support each other, much like leaders and followers do in their interconnected relationship. An effective leader-follower relationship depends on a leader’s self-understanding. The leader of a group must know his or her strengths, style, and tendency to focus more on tasks or relationships. I believe that our actions are guided by intrinsic tendencies to be task or relationship oriented. Yet, I feel that the effective leader is aware of his or her tendency to be task or relationship oriented, and holds the ability to adapt to the situation at hand. The ability to adapt to the situation requires an understanding of oneself and variances in follower behaviors. I agree with Astin and Astin (2000) that the college classroom is the ideal environment to produce leaders who are authentic, self-knowledgeable, and responsive to diversity because this idea fully supports my leadership philosophy. My leadership philosophy acknowledges that leaders arise from developing personal skills through the process of recognizing strengths and weaknesses and inclinations to respond to task completion or maintaining personable relationships. The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. In the Leadership Challenge, 4th edition, it is Kouzes & Posner (2007) intention to present a road map for individuals to follow on their leadership journey. The authors stress that “leadership is not a gene and it’s not an inheritance.” Leadership they assert is “an identifiable set of skills and abilities that are available to all of us” (p. 23). They make clear that the “great person” theory of leadership is “plain wrong.” Leaders are our everyday heroes who do extraordinary things on a regular basis (p. 23).
Leadership is contagious throughout the world and most importantly in the Army. It is not just my view, but of all leaders, at all levels, that organizations are responsible for setting conditions that lead to long-term organizational success. As I reflect on my experiences, through experience and observation, I realize how my values, beliefs, and perspectives about leadership continuously evolve over time. Recognizing these changes over time helps me better understand that people in organizations have different perspectives in life. Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
The leadership is a result of a combination of traits, with special emphasis on the personal qualities of the leader, which he should possess certain personality traits that would be special facilitators in leadership performance. Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. Leaders can have a powerful impact on the futures of many, and the way in which one approaches leadership is paramount to the type of impact one will have. Continual growth in the areas of knowledge I have and seek to acquire, as well as recognizing my leadership style and utilizing my personal strengths to the fullest, is vital to the successful implementation of my personal philosophy of leadership.
Throughout my life, my experiences and role models have shaped my understanding of leadership. I believe leadership is responsibly guiding and motivating others to use both my strengths and their own to obtain success. My personal leadership philosophy is guided by my core values of my family, relationships, loyalty, harmony, and responsibility. My ever-changing definition of philosophy helps my leadership and decision making routinely.
