In this quote we see how Sun Tzu is trying to say that the leader is essentially in charge of what happens to his people. He controls their fate because if he not an effective leader his people will pay the price. In the business world if the leader does a poor job then the company will fail and his employees will get fired. Leaders have to use a bunch of skills and techniques to ensure that their companies do well and his employees don’t get laid off. In his book The Art of War Sun Tzu gives us a lot of strategy for war but they can also be applied to the business world because after all the market is a war zone. In addition, we see Alex and Lou use the techniques Sun Tzu mentions in one way or another. One key skill a leader should have is to be able to plan. Sun Tzu also mentions this in the first chapter of the book, The Art of War. In this chapter Sun Tzu essentially talks about planning and strategy. In one quote he says “According as circumstances are favorable, one should modify one’s plans”. In business terms we can sum this quote up in SWOT analysis. In the 1960s we saw that IBM was getting majority of its income from the System 360. This was a very good time for IBM because sales were booming and it was growing. Eventually sales begin to decline and the company nearly died because its plans and strategies did not change with the circumstance. Then Louis V. Gerstner comes in as the new CEO and turns the company around over time through his leadership. He does this by changing the company’s plans and the way the company operated because circumstances were now different. This shows that leaders play a huge role in the fate of its people and organization. In the IBM book we see Lou shares the same opinion because he says, “It’s been said that every institution is nothing but the extended shadow of one person”. This person Lou refers to is the
“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” (BAM, 2010, p.20) These words were first written down over 2,400 years ago by a Chinese general named Sun Tzu in his famous military strategy treatise known today as The Art of War. These words, in fact the entire book, are just as valid today as they were during Sun Tzu’s lifetime. He was one of the first truly visionary and ethical military leaders in the world. Despite the fact that there is not much known about Sun Tzu today other than his writings, in this essay, I intend to extract his essence from his treatise to prove he was a visionary leader. I will then continue to prove he was also an ethical leader. Finally, I will finish by detailing how his seminal work has inspired me to self-reflect on how I can be a better visionary and ethical leader in the 21st Century Air Force. What does it mean to be a leader? Leadership is a way in which a person can influences others to accomplish an objective. Leaders do this by applying their leadership qualities, such as beliefs, values, ethics, character, knowledge, and skill. Two really good leaders with their own way of thinking how a country should be ran. Lao-Tzu and Machiavelli both have the ability to run a good country. They have a lot of similarities but they also have a lot of differences that set them apart from each other. Our country needs someone who is loyal to the people and trusts them. A President is a leader and is someone who others will trust and rely on to make the right choices and decisions for his country. The American people should have a good relationship with the leader. I feel that Lao-Tzu would fit as a better President than Machiavelli because he puts his trust into the people and do what is best for them.
This essay will explore the influences of Sun Tzu in the Second World War. Sun Tzu (544 – 496 BC) was a Chinese general and strategist in times of the Zhou dynasty. His techniques, even today are highly respected. The teachings of Sun Tzu were used not only in Asia and Europe but have also been applied today by the western society.

Sun Tzu was an ancient Chinese philosopher who was known as a heroic strategist. Sun Tzu authored the “Art of War” which was an ancient Chinese book based on military strategies, that significantly influenced Asian history and culture. Five factors made up Sun Tzu’s philosophy of strategies: Moral Ethics, Climate, Terrain, Leadership, and Methods, all need to achieve a victory in battle. By mastering all five factors, Sun Tzu won countless wars. Although, Sun Tzu’s philosophy was based on war, all five factors could apply to a business environment.

Here are some key details of his documentation involving lessons learned and thorough observations about warfare, involving the forces of nature used as an advantage to potentially increase the chances of success or a disadvantage that would potentially lead to failure in a war.
