Vacant and windswept, the island sees various displays of leadership as the marooned boys attempt to create a civilization. Predictably, the boys began setting up their own form of government as soon as possible; humanity has an essential need for civilization. Two characters in particular exhibit instances of leadership while constructing a state and after. For example, Jack is controlling and does not consider the opinions of others; the boy is a paradigm autocratic leader. When starting his own tribe, Jack pronounces, “I’m going to be chief” (Golding 133), and doesn’t care what the others have to say. In contrast, Ralph promotes voting from the start, and continues to be a democratic leader until society falls apart. Even though Ralph seems
to be the epitome of an apt leader, the boys fall in with Jack the usurper. In short, Jack’s totalitarian methods supersede Ralph’s egalitarian system because the best form of leadership depends on the situation and the followers. Seldom will one hear the same answer twice when asking a group what characteristics the individuals find important in a leader. Perhaps a few similar adjectives will arise, but the final results will include a plethora of ideas; leadership is, after all, a complex topic. While investigating public opinion on the matter, my group took a class poll. Intentionally, our group limited the word choices available to our peers, as to glean a concise understanding of certain views. Our goal was to find the one characteristic most desired by the class in a leader. Surprisingly, no one picked appearance as the most important characteristic; in fact, the top vote was ideology. Maturely, the tenth graders polled picked an important trait to look for in a leader. After all, a potential leader’s philosophy matters when one is deciding whether to follow them.
According to Peter Drucker, he claims, “Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.” Leadership is a commitment that is meant to be kept and done accurately. Leading a group or a society can lead to dreadful obstacles, but it’s your responsibility to have a solution to end. Ralph and Jack as a leader cause a majority of downhill for the boys. Affecting themselves and their surroundings to abruptly fall into pieces. Which lead to a mass destruction of the island, Lord of the Flies. The devastating events on this island lead to the massive chaos of Lord of the Flies, blaming Ralph and Jack for denial, lack of cooperation and inefficient leadership.
Leadership is a trait that many people have naturally and others try to obtain. Many people consider themselves a good leader when they fail to carry out the characteristics leadership require. In the book, “Lord of the Flies”, Ralph is a better leader than Jack because of the traits he possesses. That is why certain skills are necessary to be considered a successful leader.
Society is based off of hierarchy which is the basis for the change people have in society. Sometimes it’s good and other times…. Well it’s not so good. In most respects, leadership defines the outcome of a certain society. A good leader with good intentions, leading society in good directions is bound to be beneficial and maintain an ethos that will carry with them for the rest of their lives. But then there are others that are too ignorant and become less and less what they had hoped to be. Lord of the flies by William Golding is a great example of this. Golding argues that where there is a gain in power with bad leadership, that there is a loss of identity. In Lord of the Flies, A few boys arrive on a plane after it had crashed because of a war that was taken place at the time of the plane crashing. The basic synopsis is that they are trying to be rescued. The boys recollect after being separated. There are no adults on the island either. During the period they were on the island, Lots of the boys had changed. Particularly Jack… He is a choir boy who wanted to be leader. His drastic change from choir boy to savage sets the stage for loss of identity. Rogers’s morals to his change in identity are drastic when he throws rocks at the littleuns. Finally we have Percival who’s Innocence and lack of understanding in the cruel world is destroying him mentally.
How can groupthink lead to something as serious as murder? Groupthink is an occurrence that happens with a group of people where if many people are agreeing with something they don't wanna be the outcast and disagree. An experiment called the Asch experiment was done in 1951 at Swarthmore College. The experiment was a vision test and everyone knew except one knew what the experiment was. Everyone who was a part of the experiment would answer the wrong answer every time and then the last person who did not know what the experiment was would often answer the same even if it was incorrect. This is an example of Groupthink. In Lord of the Flies, many kids are stuck on an island due to a plane that crashed.
There are two different types of leaders: one who is loved by the people while acts responsibly and one who is feared by the people while being respected. These forms of leadership are shown throughout Lord of the Flies with Ralph and Jack. Niccolò Machiavelli uses The Prince to discuss how a leader should act and what leadership style is the most effective. Machiavelli clearly illustrates the types of leaders Ralph and Jack are by providing examples from ancient history.
In the book, Lord of the Flies, William Golding connects a disaster to a bunch of little English kids with the government and civics. There are at least five different ways William Golding connects the civics and the boys that were stranded on the island. Some of the events are reflected directly from our government. The Constitutional principles tie into the book a lot by the popular sovereignty, limiting powers, sharing powers, separation of powers, and protecting against tyranny. There are many different elements of the government which includes voting, symbol of government authority, and committees which are of the most important.
The desire to have power on the island creates the corruption of power within all who crave it, leading to their transformation to become evil human beings. In the novel, the boys arrive on an island without any guidance and the lack of civilization which makes it impossible for them to survive for a long time. To ensure the boy's safety and survival, the boys have to choose a chief who can keep order within the boys. Jack, the strongest character in the novel, believes that he is the most eligible to be the chief because he is the “chapter chorister and head boy”(34) of the choir boys. Jack already has power and he wants to become even powerful to point that he can control all the boys on the island. However, when voting for the chief, the
There is an unknown perfect science to being a leader. Some say that this is something you can attain over time with training or guidance, and others say it's a talent you must be born with. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, one of the main characters Ralph, is elected the leader. The reason he is elected the leader isn't boldly laid out for the reader, but what is noticed, is that Ralph carries the true essence of a leader. Ralph can be seen as a great leader by the way he has everyone's best interest in mind, by the way he sets certain rules to maintain a civil society, and how he calls assemblies to address the issues that he has become most concerned with.
This does not work for the boys are missing the necessary stability that they need. Jack said that they need to decide about being rescued. Everyone starts talking at once. The boys decide to elect a chief to establish rules, so they have a vote and elect Ralph chief (Golding 22). This shows that the boys start this type of government on the island, but it goes downhill when Jack takes over without being elected.
In William Golding’s novel, the Lord of the Flies, even though Ralph became chief of the stranded boys, Jack eventually rose to power through scare tactics, confidence, determination, and control. When Jack demonstrated his leadership skills, it was evident that he was superior to Ralph and would use his sense of Social Darwinism (survival of the fittest) and his oratory skills to surpass and isolate Ralph completely. Regardless of Ralph’s strengths, such as his conch, democratic maneuvers, firm motives, and kind demeanor, Jack’s mere presence ousted Ralph’s chances of taking effective leadership. By using propaganda against Ralph, gaining support from his partisan tribe members, and overpowering Ralph through his persuasive techniques and appearance, Jack clearly demonstrated how his leadership of the island was inevitable.
My Essay is about Ralph and and his Motivation’s and did he contribute to the tragedy in any way. Also about if he prevented any of the deaths and what would I have done differently in his situation. I defend Ralph’s actions as leader, He had tried his best but everyone fell apart. Did Ralph contribute to the tragedies? Ralph had tried his best but he was struggling at handling the problems on the island, He was unaware of the boy’s and what was going on. He had tried to contribute to all of the tragedies but there was too much going on around him it was just hard. What was wrong with Ralph too was that jack ignores everything and try’s to do his own thing the whole time instead of working together with everyone. All Jack wants is his way or his way to him there is no other way. So yes Ralph had try to contribute to the tragedies but Jack and other boys had just did what they wanted to do instead of doing what they should have done. So Ralph had really struggled dealing with everybody. In my opinion Ralph was doing a good job, Yes he kind of gave up for a little b...
There are always people who, in a group, come out with better qualities to be a leader than others. The strongest people however, become the greater influences which the others decide to follow. However, sometimes the strongest person is not the best choice. Authors often show how humans select this stronger person to give an understanding of the different powers that people can posses over others.
A community that has immaturity in itself leads to chaos. The immaturity on the island starts on the very first day with the boys taking of all their clothes off. Following after the clothes, Jack tries to tell Ralph what he is going to do which is hunt for pigs. Instead of the fire job Ralph gave Jack. Since, Jack is unhappy with all of Ralph’s rules, Jack creates another immature community to be chief. In the end, when Jack to tries to kill Ralph the plan backfires, and gets all of the boys rescued. Therefore,
1939, the start of the most tragic war in history by one of the greatest leaders of history. The attack on Poland in 1939 by Adolf Hitler sparked a historic war where the first atomic bomb was used. Adolf Hitler, the dictator of Germany, is known by some as the “savior from the economic Depression” (Yihan). This savior had leadership qualities similar to those of Jack in the novel Lord of the Flies. If Jack and Ralph's tribes were countries and they the nation's leaders, Jack would make the best national leader based on his witty personality, persuading character and innovative
In the novel. Lord of the Flies, the author develops Ralph’s desire to remain civilized, and to create a structured society that is similar to a dictatorship, government which the leaders have absolute authority. Additionally, Jack’s actions reflect fascism, authoritative leadership emphasizing aggressive nationalism. Initially, Ralph embraces the adventure and risk in regards to the island. This sense of escapade was illustrated when he imagined the island as a ship going on a great voyage. However, it becomes evident that he desires structure when he demands that conch is to allow its holder to speak freely, though only he and Jack apparently have such a prerogative. By doing so, it shows that Ralph wants control that is similar to an authoritarian
