Authentic Leadership Style The concept of authenticity has its roots in Greek philosophy (“To thine own self be true”). Researchers (Harter, 2002; Erickson, 1995) have provided excellent reviews of the origins and history of authenticity within the fields of philosophy and psychology. The term authenticity as used here refers to “owning one’s personal experiences, be they thoughts, emotions, needs, wants, preferences, or beliefs, processes captured by the injunction to know oneself and further implies that one acts in accord with the true self, expressing oneself in ways that are consistent with inner thoughts and feelings” (Harter, 2002). A prominent theory of authentic leadership views it as composed of four distinct components.

1. Self-Awareness (“Know Thyself”). A prerequisite for being an authentic leader knows your own strengths, limitations, and values. Knowing what you stand for and what you value is critical. Moreover, self-awareness is needed in order to develop the other components of authentic leadership.
2. Relational Transparency (“Be Genuine”). This involves being honest and straightforward in dealing with others. An authentic leader does not play games or have a hidden agenda. You know where you stand with an authentic leader.
3. Balanced Processing (“Be Fair-Minded”). An effective authentic leader solicits opposing viewpoints and considers all options before choosing a course of action. There is no impulsive action or “hidden agendas”–plans are well thought out and openly discussed.
4. Internalized Moral Perspective (“Do the Right Thing”). An authentic leader has an ethical core. She or he knows the right thing to do and is driven by a concern for ethics and

Leaders are encouraged to maintain the perception of authenticity but making sure that their words are consistent and reflect their action or intentions. I would say that I’m an authentic leader and I use relational empathy. Authentic leadership means I lead through honesty, and my morals. I try to live my life as honest as possible and to stick to my morals, and standards I’ve set. I also believe I relate to relational empathy because, I go beyond myself to understand others and what they may be dealing with or going through. I have realized throughout the course reading that there are many types of leadership and thus, I have taken the information and learned from that. In the conclusion of Charles Taylor’s “The Ethics of Authenticity,” Taylor addresses how modern individuals need to rediscover what is most important and valuable. The culture of individualism and authenticity is ingrained in our modern language and society. And while individuals may believe that individualism is the cause of the three malaises, they must acknowledge that individualism points to authenticity. Individualism is about a common humanity, and that the value of individualism is greater than just ourselves.
Leadership can be shown through any person in any type of situation. In a classroom discussion, on the playing field, or in public a sign of a leader is evident. A person is born a leader. Certain humans know what to do when the time calls for it. Many people in positions can be entitled a leader such as basketball players. Even a famous movie star can be given this title. These people are not true leaders. True leaders are the belaboring teachers and the intellectual speakers. These are the people who show that leadership is an action, not a position.
Honesty and integrity are the two most important characteristics for leadership success in any work place. The foundation of any relationship is honesty. To be a good leader, one must be honest. My goal is to create a workplace that every people can trust me and I can trust them so that we work together for a common goal. I would like to be a trusted leader because I am sure this characteristic will bring Done Right and On Time result in my career.
Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.
I have had the opportunity to work with leaders of different styles, and by just watching them, listening to them and seeing how the staff reacts; I can gauge what is productive with their staff. Through socialization, people discover the advantages of concealing their genuine selves. Merely the thought of being marginalized for uniqueness gives some individuals anxiety. Holding non-traditional beliefs, wearing peculiar clothing, saying something colorful or simply deciding not to conform to societal standards puts a person at risk. Subsequently, cloaking ourselves in facades and wearing intricate masks can become so commonplace that we forget who we truly are as a result. Apprehension has led us down this foggy path, and complacency prevents numerous from deviating the course. Authenticity is a masterful practice of continual self-discovery, self-contentment, and compassion. Authentic individuals are so proficient that they look outside themselves to the needs and desires of others, for they are deeply in-touch with their own mind, body, and soul.
