“Lead The Way”
It was official, the first day of fifth grade was over, and it had been a great day. I was certain that nothing could ruin it. As my mother drove my siblings and I home we noticed an odd long black car in our driveway that was waiting for us, my mom told me and my siblings to go inside and start dinner. I ran inside to the window by the kitchen to see what was going on and I saw my mother crying, tears steadily dripping down her face, and her head on the shoulder of an Army Colonel. Two other soldiers stood to the side and waited while my mother was crying. The soldiers left a few minutes later. “Mome what is wrong why were there soldiers at our door?”, I said in a curious voice “Go start

We packed our bags and started the drive to Dover, as I looked around the room I saw a picture of my uncle and I at my first baseball game kneeling on the ground after my first win. I thought back on our memories and it hit me that he was gone and I would never see my Uncle Todd ever again.
We arrived at Dover Air Force Base around eleven the next day and saw my Aunt, Todd's wife, and Kylie, my eight month old cousin. My grandparents and other aunts and uncles were also there. As the casket slid off the plane I noticed that his unit the 101st Airborne Rangers had put all of their patches on the casket. On the patch I noticed the words “Lead The Way” and that is when I realized my uncle died as a Leader, and a hero.
A month later my dad and I hung up the Gold Star banner on our window and it said “1st Lieutenant Todd Weaver 101st Airborne Rangers” and under that it said “Lead The Way”.
This is Audie Murphy's life story. At the tender age of 12, he becomes the head of the family after his father deserts them. He joins the army at the age of 18 and through the course of the war is decorated for valor nine times thus becoming the most decorated combat soldier in World War II. Audie does one of the bravest acts any soldier ever did during the war. He climbs aboard a burning tank destroyer and single handedly keeps the enemy from advancing on his position. He spends almost an hour on top of the tank destroyer until his ammunition is exhausted. Seconds later after climbing off the tank destroyer, it explodes. For this action, Audie receives the Medal of Honor.
“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty for service as a machine gunner with Company I on Operation ALLEN BROOK. Company I was approaching a dry river bed with a heavily wooded tree line that borders the hamlet of Lee Nam, when they suddenly came under intense mortar, rocket propelled grenades, automatic weapon and small arms fire from a large, well concealed enemy force which halted the company’s advance and wounded several marines. Realizing that key points of resistance had to be eliminated to allow the units to advance and casualties to be evacuated. Pfc. Burke, without hesitation, seized his machine gun and launched a series of 1-man assaults against the fortified emplacements. As he aggressively maneuvered to the edge of the steep river bank, he delivered accurate suppressive fire upon several enemy bunkers, which enabled his comrades to advance and move the wounded marines to positions of relative safety. As he continued his combative actions, he located an opposing automatic weapons emplacement and poured intense fire into the position, killing 3 North Vietnamese soldiers as they attempted to flee. Pfc. Burke then fearlessly moved from one position to another, quelling the hostile fire until his weapon malfunctioned. Obtaining a casualty’s rifle and hand grenades, he advanced further into the midst of the enemy fire in an assault against another pocket of resistance killing 2 more of the enemy. Observing that a fellow marine had cleared his malfunctioning machine gun he grasped his weapon and moved into a dangerously exposed area and saturated the hostile tree line until he fell mortally wounded.
I can’t not forget that moment. Ever. I look back at my beginnings at Fort Benning Georgia were I started my airborne training and went on to Fort Bragg North Carolina for the special forces qualification course. Not only do I have airborne brothers but I have Special Forces brothers throughout the world.
Sixth grader Jodee enrolled at a private academy and the first few months were without incident. Jodee reveled in having friends and tried to do everything right to stay in good standing. The trouble started when she called her mother to leave the party early. Jodee begged her mother not to tell her what was going on with the twelve-year-olds—but they were all caught in the act. Monday morning at school she found her favorite suede shoes floating in a toilet bowl of urine with a note attached—“Bitch, this is just the beginning.”
In 1989 I was a private in basic training at Fort Benning Georgia United States Army Infantry School. In a classroom setting, for a reason that I cannot recall, one of my drill sergeants said “you’re no Audie Murphy.” I made the rookie mistake of asking “Who is Audie Murphy?” The room went silent. I did not know why, but I knew something was wrong because all three of my drill instructors including the senior drill instructor stared at me like I dropped my rifle. The senior drill instructor said, “You’re in the Army and you don’t know who Audie Murphy is?” In a stern voice he told me to find out then report back to tell him about Audie Murphy. I asked other people in the class, and I learned quickly that Audie Murphy is one of the most well-known Army war heroes in our nation’s history.
...n the United States Armed Forces, 3,463 have been awarded with the Medal of Honor. The medal is the highest award an individual serving in the armed forces can receive. It is awarded to men and women who risk their lives and go above and beyond the call of duty. Only 76 recipients of the Medal of Honor are still living today, Hershel “Woody” Williams is the last living recipient in West Virginia. His heroic actions saved many lives and will be forever noted and remembered in history and will be shared for many generations to follow. Hershel “Woody” Williams is my hero because of the amount of courage he displayed, the achievements he made, and his noble qualities.
The time was running fast and I had a couple days left to spend some time with my family and friends. At that time I realized of people I will miss, and I wouldn’t able to meet them again. Even for my parents, it was the toughest time leaving all families and friends behind and start a new life in a new place.
Once upon a time there was a boy named Joe and it was his first day in middle school. So Joe and his brother and parents went to open house at the school so Joe and Billy know where there classes are. So then the next day they got on the bus and Joe was playing with his friends from 5th grade that he knows then they got to school. Then Joe ate lunch and the he went to his homeroom and say so of the same people from 5th grade. And Joe told his brother that the first day at school wasn’t so bad. The next day Joe and Billy got up and put their clothes on then ate breakfast then went to the bus stop. Then the bus came and they got on the bus and went to school. Then they got to school ate
One foggy, dark, silent night I woke up in the middle of the night because I heard someone talking outside. I looked outside and saw my mom and dad talking to what looked like a general. It sounds like a stereotype about southern people but, during the war, many of the soldiers fighting for the confederacy did not have shoes, as most of the shoe factories were in the North(“The Battle of Gettysburg, 1863”) The general made his way inside not caring for mom and dad and expressed to me “ Hello Noah I’m General Stockton of the North and you need to come with me and serve in the army.”
Friends that I knew their parents and I knew how hard it would be for them to know about the lost of their son. Other part of my colleagues (friends) lost body parts as well. The thing that was harder more that the training, was to go to visit those who stayed alive in the hospital. Some of them were in a vegetative state; others got treatment for their wounded parts. Impossible to explain the feeling or the look of those parents standing next to their child’s bad not knowing if they should be happy or sad. With all the pain and the suffer, I have learned to appreciate life, I learned that nothing is taken for granted and every day I wake up it is a day that I received as a gift, if I could be among those wounded or dead soldiers but I did not, instead, I was from those who visit wounded soldiers and not visited by others. It is a sign, this is my destiny, and I must fulfill it in the best way possible.
One hot summer day as I walked in from what I expected to be a regular day, it was clearly revealed to me that my loved ones and I might see the end of our days. I was only nine years old but somehow I still managed to fully understand that my life was in immediate danger. My mothers boyfriend had plans to kill my mom and her three kids. As I walked into the kitchen to get a drink, four shiny bullets were laid out on the table, which made his plans of execution seem more realistic. As I
It was April 5, 2006 a boy named Tom had attended a school out the outskirts of his little town named Millet and this town had a little population of 1,650 people but along with this was a odd history of the town being that it was a battle field from long ago. This particluar day Tom was at the school early to help his teacher with a class project that was for a class parade, Tom had asked his teacher for a bathroom break when he left the room and started down the long dark hall he noticed a man dressed in a nice uniform standing at attention with his hands to his side the closer Tom got to the soldier, the soldier would become more tranparent and when Tom got to the exact spot where the soldier was standing he smelt a fowl sour smelling oder.
The coach bus ride, amazing baseball field, and great hotel all came together to create one of the best moments in my life. We arrived in our rooms to find they were all linked together by doors, it was the perfect set up. We arrived at the baseball field knowing we were playing a multiple state championship team and I was pitching. It was the first game that all three of my pitches were on and I dominated with 11 strikeouts. During the whole season I had struggled during the last inning but at the end of this game i was perfect and ended the game with a strikeout. The embrace of my new family and the happiness I found in persevering through hard times combined to give me a feeling that I will probably never feel
...y brother and took the dog out. I jumped into the shower and did a fast wash. I ran to my bedroom to get dressed and took a quick look at the clock. I had plenty of time. I got dressed, and I even changed my shirt twice because I could. I went down for breakfast and the coffee was ready. But, I was alone. My heart started racing. In my hurry to get ready, I did not notice that my mom and brother were not up. “Oh no”, I thought. I dashed to my mom’s room and yelled, “Get Up, Get Up!, you need to hurry or I am going to be late for school.” My mom looked at me and said, “Why are you in such a big rush today, when normally I cannot get you to open your eyes at this time?” I yelled, “Hurry or I am going to be tardy and get suspended.” My mom just smiled and pulled the covers over her head. As she did that, I could just hear her say, “Trace it is Saturday.”
Then the phone rang and Dad answered it. It was hard to tell what the conversation was about, it did not last long and Dad didn’t say much. When he hung up he was quiet. Then Mom asked, “Who was that, honey?” Blunt and to the point he said, “Grandma,” (his mom) “Grandpa got sick last night.” Suddenly I was not hungry any more. “What’s that mean?” Mom asked, taking the words right out of my mouth. Dad did not really know. All Grandma said was that Grandpa got up in the night, went to the bathroom, and then yelled for help before collapsing. She called 911 and an ambulance came and got him. From the hospital in Spirit Lake he was life-flighted to Sioux Falls.
