The Lazy Generation Kicks butt in the workforce
Graduating high school had to be the biggest accomplishment of my life until reality hit me, then I realized I had way more to think about if I thought I could get through life like a got through high school. Working every day and going to college is the most difficult thing I’ve ever done, but I’m labeled as lazy because I complain that I’m tired from working a whole week and going to class three times a week. Generation Y also known as the Me, Me, Me generation is accused often of being the laziest generation but this is false. Majority of Y generation is actually very hard working, older generations cannot seem to look past our narcissism which makes it hard for them to work with us I’m assuming, but we get the job done and work for what we need and for what we want. Most millennials are hard workers and also smart, being the generation of technology we utilize what we have because it has works for us in multiple occasions. We also are the only generation that is better at switching from task to task, it’s not hard for us to move forward because of our great work ethics, and our ability to work with new and advanced technology. The type of experience that the Y generation has will affects how our lives will continue to be in the near future.
Generation Y seems to be the topic of everyone’s opposing conversations, because we are accused of being the laziest generation. She uses different terms to discuss this generation of workers, including Generation Y, another common name for millennials. Matchar’s exposition of why millennials are changing the workplace is broken down into specific points. She references the declining job market and why, due to circumstance, it is hard for millennials to get jobs as it is. I was born in 1995, which makes me part of “Generation Y,” also known as the “Millennials.” Millennials is used to describe the people born from 1980 up until the early 2000s. Millennials have been negatively described as selfish, lazy, and narcissistic, along with having unrealistic work expectations. As part of this “Millennials” generation, I agree. I believe as a society we are too focused on “us” and pleasing ourselves. We are selfish and do not understand what it means to suffer. I also believe it is not entirely our fault.

The forcible removal of Australian Indigenous children from their families during the 1900’s became official government policy until 1969; the children who were taken away are now known as the ‘Stolen Generations’. A loss of cultural affiliation, an entrenched mistrust and anger towards non-Indigenous peoples, a loss of spirituality and connection to ancestors, substance and alcohol abuse and mental illness (Korff, 2015) are a mere few effects that ‘continue to resound through generations of Aboriginal families’ (Dudgeon & Hirvonen, 2014). It is a dominant stereotype that the Millennial Generation possesses a great sense of entitlement. When one is entitled, they feel as if they should be more privileged and seem to behave as if they are more deserving than others. “Intelligence” has an ambiguous definition that is usually generalized as either an overall score integrating all areas of knowledge, the ability to recall information, or according to American developmental psychologist Howard Gardner, 8 different areas one can either be weak or strong in. The millennial age vastly differs from past generations where the progression of technology has increased convenience and an influx of new ways to do old tasks. However such accomplishments are overlooked as the generation is ridiculed by previous generations and given the grand title of being “the dumbest generation”, with technology as the culprit.
In his May 2013 editorial for Time Magazine, “Millennials: The Me Me Me Generation,” Joel Stein explains his viewpoint on millennials, defined as people born 1980 through 2000. Using an occasionally humorous tone, Stein summarizes the typical bleak view that older people have for the younger generation, before offering what he believes is closer to the truth. In the end, he decides that while millennials are not without their flaws and vices, a lot of the fears that older people are mostly due to the advanced technology that we are now dealing with. By the end of the article, it is my opinion that Stein makes a very fair summarization and is correct in his idea that to write off the entire generation is unfair towards younger people.
Generation Z is determined to change the future and is at an advantage over all previous generations to do so. This group is those born between the years 1995 and 2012, whom are currently ages 4 to 21. Statistics show Gen Z is extremely mature for their age with the lowest levels of drug use, alcohol consumption, smoking, and teenage pregnancy in decades, as stated by JWTIntelligence. This demonstrates that they are future orientated. Generation Z is unified, diverse, realistic, and technologically advanced, making them the generation with the power to impact the world.
That is understandable because in the early years becoming an adult meant turning of age, 18, getting a job, moving out and starting your own family, but now turning 18 doesn’t mean you automatically are an adult and can move out and start your own life, I have friends that went to college, have a job but still are not able to move out on their own even in their twenties. Parents of the individuals in Generation Y are, according to Rosie Evans (n.d.), “subconsciously trying to cover up their guilt over the state of the economy by lifting their children’s financial burdens.” Our social lives in some ways are very positive and many of us can balance a good social life. On the other hand, some of us don’t have a very good balance and our social lives can come from our families, education, and finances. The Millennial generation is very dependent on social media, and what society says is “in,” this is because that’s mostly all we know, growing up in a time where technology is a main part of society.
As the largest generation on the planet (Jenkins), the Millennials (otherwise known as generation Y) have faced plenty of scrutiny from the previous generations. A Millennial is the demographic group made up of anyone who was born between the years 1980 and 2000. This group of young people has proved to be a great contribution to society and also to the advancement of technology. They do things in their own ways and on their own terms, always approaching a problem in the most efficient way possible for everyone. Millennials have settled numerous issues in our society and they are expected to change our world exponentially. Millennials adapt to new technologies very quickly, however, while Millennials see themselves in generally positive terms such as ‘tech-savvy’ and ‘up to date’, many people from the older generations see them as ‘spoiled’ and ‘lazy’. The new technologies do make living everyday life easier and more functional, however, Millennials are not at all ‘lazy’ for taking advantage of them. Millennials use these new tools in incredibly innovative ways and they see the world in a completely different light.
