Currently, the policy in the state of Idaho for an anti-bullying program, Title 18, Chapter 9, Subsection 18-917A, states that each school district must have an anti-bullying program that requires a program to be in place. But, it does not specify the curriculum taught. The Idaho policy on anti-bullying should be changed to include a positive reinforcement program. The policy needs to be changed to a positive reinforcement program because bullying affects so many different students and the anti-bullying program has been proven to be ineffective, schools should teach kindness in order to prepare healthy, well rounded individuals, and elementary is where children learn and establish good morals, which is where the largest impact can be made.
When the word bullying is brought up, one always pictures in his or her mind a big angry boy, who picks on other small helpless children. What some don’t realize is that bullying comes hand in hand with popularity, likeability, and peer acceptance. Children are heavily influenced by other kids his or her age, as the old saying goes, “But mom Jimmy gets to stay up past 10, why can’t I?” According to Miranda Witvliet, to understand children’s peer group affiliation, you need to be able to examine children naturally occurring groups resemble each other on bullying, likeability, and perceived popularity. Bullying has become a major problem facing the United States today. The American Psychological Association reports that roughly 40% to 80% of children are involved in bullying on some level during their time in school. (APA, 2014) The magnitude of the problem can be observed in the statistics. In the United States, a total of 4,080,879 children between the ages of five and 18 have been the victims of bullying compared to 3,892,199 who have reported that they have engaged in bullying someone else. Additionally, 851,755 said that they have been both the victim and the bully. That's a whopping 8,824,833 people in the United States that have been involved in bullying behavior on one level or another. (High, B., 2000 Census)
Imagine coming home from school, you are already upset from getting bullied and then your phone starts beeping. It repeatedly keeps alerting you and it fills up with hateful messages and threats. This is the life of a child who is bullied and harassed, this happens to them constantly until they eventually implode. Things have to be done to prevent bullying in schools in order for society to overcome this fast growing problem. Lives could be saved from students acting out, as well as lives bettering from students who would not be bullied anymore. Society would become better as a whole without teenage bullying, or even adult bullying seen in the workplace. In many cases, people don’t help out with the situation unless they’ve been through it before, which is also not helping. Not only is it already hard to be a teenager, but having to deal with constant teasing and harassment is just something no one needs. There is a point in life where bullying can become so terrifying that students will rather stay at home than have to face their bully. Darnell “Dynasty” Young is a 17 year old gay teen who has gone through every possible way to stop his bullies from harassing him. His mother has tried everything but hasn’t been able to put a stop to it. Until one day, Young’s mother bought Darnell a stun gun. His mother told him to bring it to school and when the bullies began to torment him to take it out. He did just that, he did not actually shoot anyone he just waved it up in the air to intimidate his bullies. He not only got suspended but he also got arrested, yet the six boys teasing him and calling him names received no punishment whatsoever. (CNN) Young is one of the many kids that go through this type of abuse in a place where they should feel safe. This is an example of the school failing to do anything to prevent this kind of behavior, even after the parents try to intervene. This is also a great example of parents failing to implement high behavior standards by enforcing them to retaliate. Parents should be there to advice a peaceful way of resolving this in a non violent way not give them the weapon. By implementing prevention programs such as activities that help fight bullying can ultimately lead to the end of this horrific thing some kids face each day.
Imagine yourself watching the News before you go to bed or while you are sipping your cup of coffee before you leave to beat the morning rush. Now imagine, the News without the coverage that involves bullying. Unfortunately this is hard to do because incidents that involve bullying fill the News. Bullying happens in homes, in schools, at work, in the military; and just about everywhere else. Bullying needs to be stopped immediately at younger ages to end the reoccurrence of bullying throughout everyday life.
Many people in our world believe that they have the authority to determine someone else 's worth. In our society, people are being called degrading and horrible things constantly. This is known as bullying. Bullying is defined as unwanted or aggressive behavior towards an individual that is usually repeated over time. The way someone views themselves is important to their character and way of life. If a person is constantly told that they are "ugly" or "worth nothing", it might shape them into what they see in the mirror on a daily basis. Dark thoughts that result from bullying can lead to a dark way of life and even suicidal thoughts. Bullying should be a crime because it can lead to depression and suicide in some cases.

Statistics also show that seventeen percent of students in grades sixth through tenth reported having been bullied "sometimes" or more with eight percent being bullied once a week, and ninteen percent said they had been a bully to others "sometimes" or more (Olweus2). Bullying has the capability of lasting effects on a ones physcological state, as well as physical. No human being should be in constant fear of when a bully may strike next, or whether one will survive the next day. For this reason, bullying awareness programs should be implemented in schools across the nation to aid and battle bullying to protect kids as well as teach the importance of anti-bullying.
Bullying happens all around the world. The Anti-bullying movement started because kids all around the world were getting bullied and not a lot was getting done to stop it. This movement is meant for kids to feel like they can be themselves at school and not get judged for the way they act because it is part of who they are. As a society, we often underestimate the damages that bullying cause on children, not just America but all over, and the ones who suffer are the victims themselves. Victims are damaged with the stigma that they are weak, yet somehow have to fend for themselves against something that they have little to no control over. The National Center for Educational Statistics, in 2009, said nearly 1 in 3 students between the ages of 12 and 18 reported being bullied in school. Eight years earlier, only 14 percent of that population said they had experienced bullying(Ollove,2014). Bullying is an issue that is a problem in society today. Bullying is any kind of unwanted behavior to an individual on repeated occasions which is a display of power over someone. Bullying is mainly common among students in school, and unfortunately, it happens in other places like at home between parents and children, and on rare occasions, among adults. When people began to identify bullying for what it is, it was only known as a physical aggression towards others, but over the course of time, bullying has moved from just physical bullying to verbal bullying, and power abuse in the workplace between co-workers in different ranks. In a book called Welfare Brat: A Memoir, Mary was bullied in school by boys on the streets, and unfortunately, she was verbally bullied by her mom. Bullying among children in the society is caused by different reasons, and affects its victims negatively.
“Researchers have conducted that at least 25% of all children will be affected by bullying at some point during their school years, and many of these children miss significant numbers of school days each year owing to fear of being bullied” (Bray, M., Kehle, T., Sassu, K. (2003). Bullying has become a major problem for our students and our schools. Children are missing educational time and are losing self-confidence because they are afraid or intimidated by other students. We, as teachers, need to reduce bullying in our schools and prevent bullying from being a reoccurring issue in the lives of our students in order for them to learn, grow and develop. Our goal as teachers should be “to reduce as much as possible-ideally to eliminate completely- existing bully/victim problems in and out of the school setting and to prevent the development of new problems” (Olweus, D. (1993).
Bullying has always been present within the United States. Although the issue has been around for a long time, it continues to grow and become more of problem. It is said that about 160,000 children within the United States are refusing to go to school because of bullying. Another statistic is that within American schools alone, there are an estimated 2.1 billion bullies and 2.7 billion victims (Dan Olewus, MBNBD). The numbers presented here are outrageous and although there are organizations to stop bullying, obviously there needs to be a new set of solutions. Any type of bullying presents problems to children, “Suicide, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, trouble with the law, poor performance in school and work, and lack of involvement in socially accepted activities are some of the difficulties resulting from bullying (Austin, Reynolds, Barnes, Shirley). Of course, there is more than just a single type of bullying. Feeding ground for bullies can range anywhere from text-message or cyberbullying to physical bullying in schools. Also, bullies can begin to strike at a young age and could also be; teenage, middle-age, or even the elderly. Even though there are these many versions of problematic bullies, the largest bullying problems take place within the school setting: a place that is supposed to be safe for children rather than harmful. Although it seems impossible to completely get rid of bullying, these are a few suggested solutions; making the school informed on bullying issues, schools implementing rules on bullying, and having students positively use electronics to stop bullying.
