Shanghai in the 19th and early 20th century was a unique city. The combination of its status as an entrepôt, the complexity of its society, and the very existence of the International and French concessions all contributed heavily to the difficulty of protecting law and order within the city. The focus here is on the political and civic; the French Concession is not a major object of concern, as it was subject to many of the same vicissitudes and issues as the International Settlement, and differs only slightly in the path it took to handle them. The factors that most heavily influenced the law and order of Shanghai, therefore, were extraterritoriality, the international settlement and its governing body, and the coexisting criminal justice systems.
The International Settlement was founded in 1863. It was the result of the joining of the American and British settlements. The International Settlement was governed by the Municipal Council, founded in 1854, and which was directly responsible for all affairs in the settlement. The document that this group's authority rested upon was called the Land Regulations. It had been drafted by the Shanghai Circuit Court Intendant and the British Consul. They stated that the International Settlement was to have "an executive committee or council." It had nine members, and they were elected by upper class land owning foreigner taxpayers. A provision was made for Chinese members after large-scale strikes and riots were held in the late 1920s, but it was some years before they found their way onto the council. Shanghai's place in history is certainly a grand one. The city endured a century of occupation by over a dozen foreign powers. It was a massive trade center. It was the home of the largest crime syndicate in all of China. It was truly sui generis. One of the most important aspects of its history was that of the imperialist. For most, imperialism represents callous abuse of the native world. For most, this is correct, and Shanghai is no different. However, the role of the imperialist in Shanghai was much broader. Imperialism in Shanghai paved the way for swifter modernization of everything from its street lamps to its police.
In the Chinese detective novel, Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee, a view into the Chinese judicial system during the Tang dynasty is provided. After reading the novel, one finds that the Chinese judicial system worked in similar but also in different ways compared to modern day judicial systems around the world. In order to notice this correlation, this paper will analyze the responsibilities and measurements the judge had to undergo in order to solve the crimes that occurred in his district. There reasons include the questionable leadership of Yuan Shih Kai, the presence of the warlords, the One of the reasons was that questionable leadership of Yuan Shih Kai. When Yuan took over control from Sun Yat Sen as the President, he tried to revert to the monarchical system of rule. From 1912 until 1915, he ruled as a military dictator with the support of the army. His rule was already blemished with resistance and that demonstrated that the people did not quite accept him as the leader of China.

Gary B. Nash argues that the American Revolution portrayed “radicalism” in the sense on how the American colonies and its protesters wanted to accommodate their own government. Generally what Gary B. Nash is trying to inform the reader is to discuss the different conditions made by the real people who were actually fighting for their freedom. P’u shamelessly addresses the fact that despite preaching honor and virtue, the nobility were the most lawless, yet only an idealized account would be recorded in history, as has always been. The author mocks this relinquishment in his own stories, as the moral is driven to immorality as rebels receive little to no punishment for their flagrant abuse of others and adultery against virtue. He describes the turmoil as “the ways that misery spawned recklessness and sudden, unreasoning violence that were almost impossible to deal with” (Spence 79). Laws themselves proved to be as wicked and depraved as their creators. For example, a horrific clause even encouraged men to take advantage of widows for profit. While the peasant class resisted their struggled by simply trying to survive, the upper nobility fought their problems by making the existence of those below them harder to bear. Enforced laws were done so with no due process, yet were made flexible by their own creators. Therefore, Spence exhibited the lawlessness and the government and its constant effort to contain this disorder. By hand-selecting the sources and settling on rural China, Spence felt the format effectively depicted his purpose. He effectively detailed history in relation to the average person of 17th century China and created a personal perspective that imbued the historical events with meaning. He most fully and accurately captures the greed, vision of morals, unaltered by elite preference and ironically one can draw parallels to our modern times. A cultural change during 100 CE to 600 CE was the paper invention that led to passing down cultural rituals. Not only were there changes but there was also continuities in the Chinese political and cultural life. An example of a cultural continuity is the increasing power of Buddhism. Foot binding began in Song Dynasty, and was just popular in upper social society. With the gradually popularization of foot binding, in the end of Song Dynasty, it became generally popular. In his 1937 film Street Angel, Yuan explores the inequities facing Shanghai’s urban proletariat, an often-overlooked dimension of Chinese society. The popular imagination more readily envisions the agrarian systems that governed China before 1919 and after 1949, but capitalism thrived in Shanghai during that thirty-year buffer between feudalism and Communism. This flirtation with the free market engendered an urban working class, which faced tribulations and injustices that supplied Shanghai’s leftist filmmakers with ample subject matter. Restrained by Kuomintang censorship from directly attacking Chinese capitalism, Yuan employs melodrama to expose Street Angel’s bourgeois audience to the plight of the urban poor. Yuan presents capitalist Shanghai as a binary and deeply unequal society, at odds with the “more pluralistic sense of cosmopolitanism” desired by leftist filmmakers of the 1930s (Pang 62).
Immigration, the act of coming to live permanently in a foreign country. Throughout the United States’ history, immigrants faced various challenges and especially after 1880. Most immigrants moved to achieve the American dream of having a better life and pursuing their dreams. But, this experience as they moved, was different for every immigrant. Some lives improved while others did not. Immigrants such as Catholics, Italians, and the Chinese were not welcomed into America in the late 19th century and early 20th century because of their differences in beliefs and cultures.

Soon after the Japanese surrendered at the end of World War II, Communist forces began a war against the Kuomintang in China. The Communists gradually gained control of the country and on the 1st October, 1949, Mao Zedong announced the victory of the Communist party and the establishment of the People's Republic of China. China has been ruled by the Communist party ever since.
