Going to Law school was never on my agenda, but after attending the “SPIT” knowledge seminar my junior year in college with Judge Hatchett, it made me think about the possibilities. I begin to ask questions and do research. Then on, a year went by, I didn’t have the courage to apply to law school so after getting job offer in Houston I decided to just work full time, while pursuing a masters in Marriage in Family Therapy. This was not in my heart. I would sit in class and wonder where was this leading me to, I didn’t believe it was leading me to something I would want to do for the rest of my life, that’s for sure. I entertained the thoughts of law school every now and then, and researched, but I still didn’t act on the thoughts. That is, until …show more content…
The bifocal glasses added to his innocent appearance. I met Shahill the summer of 2014 as a Childcare Licensing Inspector for the Department of Family and Protective Services. He was the first caregiver I encountered after entering the interfaith child care center. During a typical inspection, you get name of each employee, observe the child-to-caregiver interactions, calculate classroom ratios, and check for hazards in the child care center. The background check analysis is completed at the end of the walkthrough during the exit interview with the …show more content…
“I thought to myself maybe I was so determined because I believe in defending people for the right reasons. Deep down, I knew I needed to be in a field where I could defend people with passion, attention to detail, and determination. I believe that a law degree would equip me and give me the freedom I need to protect the unprotected with a genuine heart. This is something I plan to pursue wholeheartedly if given the opportunity. The ability to boldly defend is something that has been planted in me since birth. As a child, I felt myself defending others in elementary and middle school, in high school I was the mediator never taking sides between two friends, and in college I stood up in a seminar to defend a group of students with a passionate speech about how we should not bring others down when we see that they’re falling, we should pick them up. This is something I was born to do. Finally, A year after resigning my job, and moving back home, and after a careful consideration, I found the courage to pursue
motivated to go to law school. She holds onto this idea into her adult life, showing how devoted
As I became more involved with campus life, I couldn’t find a way to immerse myself in preparing for a career in law. While I knew why I wanted a law degree, I couldn’t conceptualize what I wanted to do with it. Prior to college life, my familiarity with the legal system was by way of internships with judges and lawyers. Clearly, that traditional route perked my interest but not my passion. Living with the athletes affirmed my interest in their culture. I began to immerse myself in subjects surro...
When 12 million citizens are arrested each year, this invites a great deal of stress into the lives of public defenders who are responsible for 180 to 200 cases at a time. I personally would never put myself in a work environment which lead my hair to fall out and anxiety to take over because my life was being threatened. The realization that people exist like that is daunting. One element that struck me most in the film was when Williams’ co-worker, Brandy Alexander, spoke about representing people who admit to the crime. I had a hard time processing how a father would pride himself in raping his own daughter. I actually rewound the movie because I thought my ears deceived me at the fact he would do it again given the opportunity. Representing a case in that capacity would break me mentally. It was well said that defenders must “go at war with the system even when the client is guilty”.
Every day in the world many people wake up doing things to help others, but there’s at least 3 million people in the criminal law field (Careers in Criminal Justice,2014) that risk there life to help others and make the world a safer place. Whether you choose to purse a desk jobs or a front line job in the criminal law field there are many challenges people are faced with. Some of the challenges consist of being assaulted, exposed to life threatening things, and being alone in life. It takes a lot to choose a career when you know there are many challenges, but doing so because it benefits others.
The “GIDEON’S ARMY” film documentary follows the personal stories of Travis Williams, Brandy Alexander and June Hardwick, three young public defenders who struggle against extensive working hours, little wage and awe-inspiring caseloads so common that even the most dedicated in the profession frequently give up in their first year of labor. From watching this film it has come to fruition in my mind that only a select few can do what these young men and women put up with on a weekly basis. In the film all three public defenders attempt to provide high quality representation despite the overwhelming odds against them. They all have from top to bottom student loan debt which causes an extraordinary amount of stress to them and other public defenders in the profession. This film was also very depressing. Just from watching this film for a couple of minutes one can get very down on themselves. By the time I was done observing it I had to turn on a more motivational show because the film was really that disheartening. The Stakes were incredibly high for the defendants which faced some of t...

As a kid I was shaped by patriots, I was captivated by history, and have now become driven to protect the Constitution of the United States of America and the great people who fall under it’s power. The most efficient and successful way I can achieve this is by becoming a constitutional lawyer, an occupation which requires not 4 but 7 years of college. So here I am. I’ve come this far yet it’s just the beginning. College will open the door to changing the way I look at the world and the way that I myself change the world. I stood looking at all my options and this was the best one, so that’s why I’m here in college
Today schools are changing to integrate the 21st century. Therefore, it is imperative that educational administrators are aware of the legal framework facing the issues in schools. There are many issues the administrators will face and they must know the constitutional rights of individuals and the school. The Constitution contains the laws of the United States.
Growing up in a country where girls are constantly advised to be doctors, nurses, educators, and any other profession except law enforcement motivated me even further in accomplishing just that. Even as a little girl I simply could not ignore the violence, corruption, and inequality that affected my country; I wanted to fight the violence that brought misery to many, and bring justice to those who desperately deserved it. My goals of pursuing a career in criminal justice were constantly struck down and criticized throughout the years. However, once an impossible dream became a reality when I immigrated to the United States, the land of opportunity. Though my hope was restored, living and adapting to an unfamiliar environment with no family or support proved to be yet another obstacle. Witnessing my parents struggle to adapt, feeling helpless, and confused to provide us a better life has been an immense source of inspiration that drives me to seize every opportunity as it were my last.
... education alone. The stark reality leaves much desired, success determined through unfavorable components, which my cousin never had, where you live, money, and education. Limits stop individuals from growth and career aspirations which contributed to my cousin becoming an at risk youth. Throughout my experiences, I learned that second chances could bring individuals thought lost back to the fold and be successful. My hope is that law school will contribute in my drive towards social activism. Law school will help me in my continued efforts for children’s success. Furthermore, my guidance, of course extends to people who face similar circumstances such as my cousin. Society stigmatized the indigent, cycles formed, and members of the family remains entrenched with their future remaining uncertain. I want to serve communities in overcoming the limits set by society.
I realized I wanted to attend law school in the fall of my Junior year at the University of Rhode Island. Going into college, I had chosen to major in business. I learned quickly, however, that business was not something I was passionate about. I could not see myself spending the rest of my future in this field, and I quickly realized I needed to find my true passion. Thinking about the current political climate, I wanted to find a way that I could contribute and help. After reflecting on my own life and immigration, I remembered how hard it was on me and how difficult it was for my family. In thinking about how I could help the thousands of families like ours, I finally realized my passion: immigration law.
It is because of my ambition that I decided to pursue a post-secondary education. My family has had many obstacles to overcome due to their troubling backgrounds. My father is from Iraq, a war-torn country, and my mother is an aboriginal who experienced the tortures of residential schools. Both my parents went through many unjust events throughout their lives, and that is one of the many reasons I decided to study the field of law, to bring justice to those who are in need of it. Please also answer the following questions in your letter, they are for Indspire research purposes.
All these components will keep me grounded and stay true to what I originally wanted to pursue which is a career in the legal system of our country. Works Cited: 1) Warner, Rose. (1999). 29 Reasons Not to Go to Law School. London: Routeledge.
I ended up joining the group of more individuals that wanted to be the hero that one day would ‘save the day.’ Not in the sense of being that one superhero that every little kid looks up to, but knowing that I wanted to be part of a team that helped bring justice to each family that has lost someone. Most of my family is working or has worked in the criminal justice field from state troopers and prison guards to probation officers. So it’s almost like I 'm destined to do this kind of thing. I feel like I have to carry on the family’s pattern with going into law
I have recently been through an abusive situation and I hope that I will be able to use my education, knowledge, and compassion to help others out of harmful situations. I will be able to do this with the law degree that I have been working towards for the better part of the last five years. For most of my life I have been floundering because I have never really been passionate about anything other than sports (soccer) and learning. Most of my free time is devoted to one recreational sport or another. While I love sports I have never envisioned myself coaching outside of the developmental girls soccer team that just moved on to the competitive leagues. I had a difficult time coaching because I had difficulty expressing myself. Therefore, I do not feel that sports are my calling in life outside of recreation and enjoyment. In reflection I do hope that my educational path combined with my recent experiences will help me to use what I have learned to help others. I have never really had any direction in life, even though I feel that I have the potential to achieve whatever I set my mind to. Thus I have struggled with finding a career that I love. While law school has been my focus, I do not know if it’s because I truly want to be an attorney or if it has finally given me a focus and goal to work towards. However, I am starting to believe that law may give me the tools
