”As a Law Enforcement Officer, my fundamental duty is to serve mankind; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional rights of all men to liberty, equality, and justice.” This is first and most important sentence of the code of ethics that every law enforcement officer has to obey and follow throughout his career. Many people ask me why would I want to work for the Orange County Sheriffs Department, a career that is hated by many and supported by so little this generation. This answer is simple, law enforcement is for people who want to make an impact in the community around them. People …show more content…
For me, it's actually the complete opposite, my father is actually a person who has had felonies in his past. Without a doubt my father has changed his life around, from being a felon to going to jail and preaching to inmates about God. He has showed me the type of man I should be growing up. He is the person who encouraged me into law enforcement. Unfortunately with his record, he isn't able to get a job in law enforcement, but as a kid growing up that was always his dream, he wanted to work for the Border Patrol or DEA. His life experiences such as seeing his brother killed by the Cartel made huge impacts in his life that he knew he wanted to make a difference. But ultimately he did make mistakes that will never allow him to follow his dreams. That’s where I come in, his oldest son that he directs and is always helping me pursue my dream of law enforcement. Guiding me and not letting me fall off the path like he did. He encourages me everyday and he is one of the reasons why I know one day I will be a …show more content…
This program is made for kids who at a young age know that law enforcement is something they want to do in the future. It gives you a step over everyone else who wants to become a law enforcement officer, but was never in the program. The program is once a week for 2hrs, throughout the two hours of a meeting you learn discipline, do lots of physical training, and get taught by Sheriffs the things they learn while in the academy. This program not only taught me a lot, but made me realize that this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I was interested from the moment I joined in the moment I had to move on. At 20 I was hired as a Cadet with Laguna Beach police Department. This is where I learned the most, hands on work with detectives at the police department. This is where I get to see things come into place. I see cases from scratch, work their way into arrest warrants and see criminals go behind bars. The detectives trust me with so much that they show me everything they deal with and everything they do to catch criminals. I work side by side with them getting anything they need, from booking evidence to helping them find criminals. This job has shown me where I will be in the future and has opened up so many opportunities for me. These programs have shown me what police officers and deputies actually go through in a daily basis. It’s not a TV show or a movie it’s real
The job of a law enforcement officer sometimes can be tough. Officer are sometimes plagued with situation that test their ability to enforce the law and maintain order. This mission becomes tougher each day when one considers the importance of fighting terrorism, drugs, human trafficking,
Each position in criminal justice holds power and responsibility, and therefore, it is very important that said people in those positions do not abuse it. Unethical behavior in the criminal justice system takes away trust and respect from authority, and as a consequence, the law is more easily disregarded if the people lack faith in the system. It can, also, contribute to crime and/or cause citizens to not report crimes. Society should have indubitable confidence in the men and women of the criminal justice system. Law enforcement officers violating even the smallest rule could lead to more serious infractions. Syed (1997) states, "Every instance of corruption bends or violates a rule or law and, similar to the granting of impunity, may contribute to an officer's perceptions of the law as applying differently to different people and increase the ease with which violations can be rationalized." Having less than ethical persons in our criminal justice system can lead to a weakened society, the ruining of lives, and even add to crime.
The ethical theory I will rely on for my scenario is formalism. Considering that this is a public servant and that the main goal of formalism is to carry out obligation and duty, formalism is the theory that will apply. Adhering to this theory means you treat everyone, regardless of status or relationship, the same. It would also mean that you could not use one person as a means to an end (Albanese, 2012). Therefore, doing a favor for the mayor for personal gain, such as a promotion, is clearly not alright.
The Law Enforcement Profession Abstract In order to understand comptemporary law enforcemment, we should recognize the conditions that impact our profession. It is agreed upon by many scholars that major changes in law enforcement occur every five years. Policing is sometimes characterize"... like a sandbar in a river, subject to being changed continuously by the currents in which it is immersed..."
Police ethics are extremely important because ethics are the typical of “fair and honest conduct” (pg 460). People may have a different definition of what is fair and what is honest, and there are different circumstances where officers may not be able to be honest; such as covert investigations. Society in general determines what our ethical standards and moral principles are. Individual morals vary among all of us as they are what we as an individual consider to be right or wrong. We also have morals that are set by society. These are what we as a society consider to be right or wrong and may go hand in hand with individual morals. Morals change as society and people change, therefore we as a country have to adapt to what the changing morals are.
Law enforcement is a career that is both violent and rewarding in many capacities. Justice needs to be served in law enforcement and they have a responsibility to uphold the law and serve the people in the community. Law enforcement is crucial in the world today as a global realm as life continues to be more complex and law enforcement struggles to combat many aspects of crime. In order to combat these problems and have a positive future in the criminal justice system, everyone must work together on a bigger scale.
A Critical Assessment In defining police ethics, ethical policing and police ethics are not synonymous or interchangeable connotations to or for one another. Aside from establishing a police role independently from establishing any definition of ethics or police ethics, the semantics tend to complicate the defining process. Some of these complications include, but are not limited to, sociological aspects, psychological conditions, or philosophical reasoning. Examples of sociological complications include historical, political, cultural, or economic aspects. Some psychological examples include one’s ability to discern sociological implications from other implications; namely, the condition of post-traumatic stress disorder, hydrophobia, or even weary dreams. Lastly,
It would be fulfilling to be a police officer because police officers help people in the community and keep it safe. They also enforce the law. They are the reason why people can live their lives in peace. If there is anyone in the community that citizens can trust it would be the police officers.
Serve and protect as a police officer in the city of Santa Ana has been my career dream goal since I was growing up being influenced by police officers throughout my education. Seeing so many casualties by violence in my community is one of the reasons why I am pursuing this profession, so that I can be able to accommodate the best way I can to reduce the violence. Other reasons why I am desiring to become police officer is to save someone 's life, help people make better choices, challenging tasks, and serve my community. Although dilemmas with people being unsupportive with law enforcement has increased, I will continue to pursue this career and make a tremendous impact in the community. This career will provide me with excellent benefits
It is often said that power brings corruption, but in reality it is an individual’s lack of character, self-discipline, and integrity that leads to corruption. Law enforcement can bring many temptations on the job, and maintaining an up most level of personal integrity can often times be very difficult. The very nature of the job surrounds officers with all of the bad things that society, produces. There can be an endless amount of training and rules put into place to try and deter officers from committing unethical acts, but in the end it really just comes down to the specific individual and their willingness to do the right thing.
A police officer’s duty is to maintain public order, preventing, and detecting crime. The concept of police officers, also known as cops, and law enforcement has been around ever since the ancient Romans had a theory that an organization of “peacekeepers” would reduce the crime and violence being committed. This theory stuck with society and is still around today. People of law enforcement have a mission when they step into their police car, that mission is to enforce the rules of conduct or law. Of course, accomplishing this mission can be dangerous. Often when a cop leaves his or her house to go to work worries start to set it, such as “will I be coming back home when my day is over” or “will a simple traffic stop go sour and someone ends up dead?” These thoughts are apart of the stress that comes with the job and most people are trained to deal with this stress.
Criminal Justice professionals make decisions everyday and they have to be able to recognize when an issue involves ethical considerations. Therefore, in order to recognize these issues and make appropriate and correct decisions, it is important that the criminal justice professional study ethics. Going forward in my field of study post TCU, I had never really given sincere thought as to where I might land a profession in the field of criminal justice. The department is such a vast field, with flourishing resources that are critical to carrying out the laws. Initially, I was attracted to the therapeutic/rehabilitative side of criminal justice as a juvenile counselor or probation facilitator. I enjoying helping others and being an active listener, through skills and methods acquired from my minor in Communication Studies. Upon entering internship, my eyes were opened to all the field opportunities present that are often overlooked. Police work is not an easy task, and actually challenges individual physical/mental stability. My process as an intern began with me being stationed at the Fort Worth police academy. During my time at the academy, I got to know a lot of the officers on a one on one basis. During our conversations, I would notice that each of the men and women were drawn toward the field for their own personal beliefs or goals. It was during my first task at the academy, that I developed an inside look to the pros of law enforcement.
As a law enforcement officer, my fundamental duty is to serve mankind; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the constitutional rights of all men to liberty, equality and justice.
It took less than 20 minutes for me to realize my dream career at the ripe age of 15. From helping other bystanders detain and stop a man from beating his estranged wife to watching the “Sheep Dogs” as they are called, come running in and saving the day. I knew then and there what I wanted to do as a career but being so young, I truly didn’t know what the career entailed. Being a Police Officer in the modern day America is one of the hardest jobs to do. Day in and day out they must put on different masks and become protectors, friends, lawyers, doctors, counselors and so much more. It’s a fun and rewarding career, it’s where your zone partners don’t just become friends but they become family. You sure aren’t going to become rich but you don’t
