The Republic of Latvia, located in the Baltic region of Northern Europe, borders Russia to the east, the Baltic Sea to its west, south of Estonia and north of Lithuania. The capital and largest city of Latvia is Riga. The unitary state has an official language of Latvian, one of the last of the Baltic languages that has been passed down throughout generations. The climate of Latvia is temperate with the capability of some extreme cold temperatures and heavy snowfall in its winter season. With recent activity by the Russian government and its entry into the Ukraine drawing attention to the region, gaining knowledge about a country bordering Russia that I knew little about seemed advantageous.
The 20th century for Latvia began with it being under the control of the Russian Empire. In 1990, after pro-democratic demonstrations in Riga, the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR restored independence to Latvia and was named the Republic of Latvia.
