In the Rothenberg section, "Immigration Enforcement as a Race-Making Institution" grabbed my attention on the facts of the Latino immigration patterns. A lot of the details reminded me of my father. Back in the mid-1980s, my dad crossed the border in a not so legal manner. In the Rothenberg book, it mentioned the dramatic increase of undocumented immigrants coming into the United States around the 1980s. I chuck at the idea that my father is part of that statistic. My father would tell me stories of him as a kid. My father was in a huge family of eight. In order for my grandpa to support everyone, he asked some of his older children to work at an early age. He would ride his bike around trying to sell gum to earn some extra income to attend
school. Once he was twenty, he decided to make a bold move and be the first one of the family to move to the United States. Other of my father’s stories included his experience moving to the United States. Some of the rhetoric he experience was also a trend that was mentioned in the book. The rise of “Latino Threat Narrative” was something my dad experienced in his early years of upon arriving in the United States. Much like the previous decades, the rhetoric of “no Mexicans allowed” as a copious amount of Latino immigrants started to move into the community. I believe that type of rhetoric has never stopped, especially in the state of Arizona. Much like slavery has evolved, the same occurred with intimating the undocumented community. The most prominent example would be the infamous SB 1070 and former Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Not forgetting to include the banning of Mexican-American studies in a state where the Mexican descent makes up almost 50% of the population. With the Trump’s presidential election, I do not expect this type of rhetoric to slow down anytime soon.
The Latino community is a very varied community each with its own unique past and circumstances. In the book Harvest of Empire by Juan Gonzalez the readers can learn and appreciate some of the experiences and history that the different Latino groups had. This book does this with a special emphasis on immigration trends. These points of emphasis of the book are explained thoroughly in the identification of the key points, the explanation of the intersection of race, ethnicity, and class, in addition to the overall evaluation of the book.
Before answering this question first, we need to understand Linda Chavez was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico but now lives in American so she is considered Spanish American, and also she is a liberal. So her opinion is going to be somewhat the same as a liberals views, but because she is Spanish American she has some different opinion on illegal immigrants. So why did she bothered to write about this topic because illegal immigrants happened in the 2009 and is still happening today. Also she has Experience with this topic because she is Spanish American. What she was hoping would happen is for her reader to see that illegal immigrants are not as different from native-born and immigrants may have better family values that us. After reading her writing she wanted her readers to be aware of this situation happening around them and how immigrants are not what everyone thinks. In the texts we can see this because the percent of the both parents in a household was higher with immigrants than native-born. She also states that a lot of illegal immigrants are hard works but people may say that illegal immigrants are “lazy” and she shows us this with percents “ Nearly half of illegal immigrants between the ages of 18 and 24 who have graduated from high school attend college. A surprising 25% of illegal immigrants adults have at least some college, with 15% having completed college.” (Kennedy, 525). Immigration is a large aspect of American history. In the book Breaking Through by Francisco Jimenez, we are able to see the struggles of one Hispanic boy immigrating to the United States from Mexico. Many of the people in the community that Francisco lived in didn’t really accept Hispanic people. It was really depressing that he would make friends, go over to their house and their parents wouldn’t let him come over again, simply because he was Hispanic. In Diversity Matters the text states, “Unique stresses created by the process of immigration to another country and discrimination faced in the new country can create psychological distress for many immigrants” (Spradlin 126). During this time in America, there was still a lot of discrimination going on not only with Hispanics, but other minority races like African Americans. This really goes to show how far our country has come over the years. There is still a long way to go, but I think that if people are more educated and aware of the discrimination people face on a daily basis they will be more open-minded. The United States is becoming more open to diversity, but first we will look at the struggles of one Hispanic boy growing up here illegally in Breaking Through.
In Marcelo M. Suarez- Orozco and Carola Suarez- Orozco’s article “How Immigrants became “other” Marcelo and Carola reference the hardships and struggles of undocumented immigrants while at the same time argue that no human being should be discriminated as an immigrant. There are millions of undocumented people that risk their lives by coming to the United States all to try and make a better life for themselves. These immigrants are categorized and thought upon as terrorist, rapists, and overall a threat to Americans. When in reality they are just as hard working as American citizens. This article presents different cases in which immigrants have struggled to try and improve their life in America. It overall reflects on the things that immigrants go through. Immigrants come to the United States with a purpose and that is to escape poverty. It’s not simply crossing the border and suddenly having a great life. These people lose their families and go years without seeing them all to try and provide for them. They risk getting caught and not surviving trying to make it to the other side. Those that make it often don’t know where to go as they are unfamiliar. They all struggle and every story is different, but to them it’s worth the risk. After having viewed a few films in Chicano History class like A Class Apart, A Struggle for Educational Equality, and Latin and African Americans: Friends or foes, one cannot help but wonder how it is possible that you might be learning about the intense racism towards Latinos in the United States for the very first time after having devoted your life to the American country. I, myself, was born and raised in Arizona, a state south of the United States, in the city of Tucson that lies only about an hour away, or around 68 miles away from the Nogales, Sonora, Mexican border. One would assume to know a sufficient amount of history of the neighboring land or at least be aware of some fundamental facts about America and Mexico’s relationship throughout time.

It is crucial to understand the historical context of immigration in America. Initially, most immigrants were from Europe and were not restricted by any immigration laws. Now, most immigrants come from Latin America but are restricted to severe immigration laws. The Latino/a community is one of the most severely affected groups because the current immigration system disproportionally affects Latino/as. Recognizing how the experience of Latino/a immigrants have been both similar and different in the past from other immigrant groups and dispelling common misconceptions about Latino/as today brings awareness of how Latino/as are affected.

Latinos have struggled to discover their place inside of a white America for too many years. Past stereotypes and across racism they have fought to belong. Still America is unwilling to open her arms to them. Instead she demands assimilation. With her pot full of stew she asks, "What flavor will you add to this brew?" Some question, some rebel, and others climb in. I argue that it is not the Latino who willingly agreed to partake in this stew. It is America who forced her ideals upon them through mass media and stale history. However her effort has failed, for they have refused to melt.
Today, the Hispanic population has grown tremendously over the years. We have watched the Hispanics community growth rate grow faster than any other racial and ethnic group in the nation. The Hispanic culture and community has populated all around the United States, introducing new traditions and customs. I was traveling to different to city in the States, I notice the wide spread growth of Hispanic communities, For Instance in Miami the Cuban and El Salvadoran culture is heavy populate in the area. In New York the Puerto Rican culture is dominating through out the several boroughs. I have come around town and Hispanics are known for their good food, which tends to have more diverse people try new cultural customs. Hispanic or Latino Americans are a group of people made up of distinct characteristics. Hispanics or Latinos are defined as a people of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South or Central American, or other Spanish speaking cultures.
The United States is a country known for its variation of nationalities and ethnic races. After extensive research, and questioning I discovered that my ancestors originated from Norway and Switzerland. My family migrated to the United States in the late 1800’s from Norway due to social, economic, and religion reforms as well as, a surplus in the population. Learning of my ancestor’s migration to America has very much influenced my views on the existing immigration problems that the U.S. currently faces.
Mexican immigration in the early 1900's was a huge issue that impacted the United States. States in areas such as urban population, employment and many other areas. The mass number of Mexican immigrants that migrated to the United States from Mexico were at nearly half million. between the years of 1920 and 1929. Mexicans left their native land and moved to the United States not only to achieve financial prosperity, but to get out of the chaotic environment that Mexico was in at the time due to the Mexican revolution which began in 1910.
