Does starting school at a later time improve student performance? I think if school started at a later time then student performance will increase because study shows that later start time for teens improves grades, attendance etc.. I’ve done some research on how starting school at a later time can benefits us in some many ways.
Sleep is the number one thing your body needs and I read on some article that us teens only get between 5 and 6 hours of sleep each night. Lack of sleep affects your mood, motivation, judgment, and your perception of events. (Healthy Sleep) According to many researchers, sleep increases a student’s ability to focus and process information, and the effects of more sleep on student outcomes is often very significant. In fact, research studies recommend that teenagers sleep around 9 hours each night in order to perform their best. It also suggests that sleep plays an important role in memory, both before and after learning a new task.(Center For American Progress) By getting more sleep, your letting your body rest and it is healthy for you.

But they do not factor in that students will just stay up later at night because they know that they do not have to get up as early in the morning. Students need a total of 8-10 hours of sleep on school days to be awake in the morning. 33% of teens report falling asleep in class every day. 73% of high school students get fewer than 8 hours of sleep on school nights, with 46% of middle school students getting barely 7 hours of sleep.
Sleep, the very thing that everyone needs but no one is getting. Like oxygen to the lungs, everyone needs the right amount of sleep to be able to function at the peak of their ability and brain function. And like most typical teenagers, I am very active in my life and a proper sleep schedule has always been at the tail end of all my lists. Balancing time between academics, athletics, and a full time work schedule has left me with very little time to get a proper amount of sleep per night. If I strive to regulate stable bed times and wake up times through the use of a sleep diary then I will be able to improve concentration and energy throughout my school and work days.
