In Kanye’s 2005 hit, “We Major”, which appeared on his second studio album, Late Registration, Kanye reflects on his rise to the top; from being broke in Chicago to eventually becoming one of the most influential artists of all time and a multi-billionaire. The song is an anthem to those who started from the ground up and faced adversity every step of the way, and one should celebrate the success they now have. This relates a large part to the upbringing of Jay Gatsby. Once being a dirt-poor farm boy in North Dakota, to becoming one of the richest men in New York, Gatsby started from the bottom and rose to the top, very similarly to how Kanye describes his come up in, “We Major.” Although Gatsby did not have an extremely “honest” way of accumulating his money, nonetheless, Gatsby still defied odds to become extraordinarily successful. For this song, Kanye specifically targeted the African country of Sierra Leone. In Sierra Leone, the poor, including children, are forced to work hard labor to extract these diamonds that the wealthy use to fund their expensive lifestyles. Ye speaks of the conflicting feelings he gets due to the fact he wants to wear the diamonds, but he knows what the people mining them are experiencing.
