Late Night with The Devil is a 2023 Australian Found Footage? Horror film, written and directed by the brother duo Cameron and Colin Cairnes. The pair are known as the creators behind such films as 100 Bloody Acres (2012), and Scare Campaign (2016). The film is inspired by an episode of the Australian talk show The Don Lane Show (1975-83) starring Uri Geller and Dorris Stokes. A live television broadcast in 1977 goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation's living rooms. Poised as a recently discovered master tape of the notorious live broadcast of the fictional late-night talk show Night Owls with Jack Delroy from Halloween 1977, Late Night with the Devil oozes nostalgic 70s charm with every available second of screentime. From the wardrobe and hairstyles to the washed-out colour schemes, and even the scripted comedy back and forth between host and sidekick delivers the very epitome of the era’s talk shows. …show more content…
Featuring an incredibly realistic depiction of 70s TV, the analog aesthetics are meticulously replicated with authenticity. From colour calibration issues that cause a slight colour bleed, low-resolution image blur, and tight 4:3 ratio, the film's visuals tie every nostalgic element into a believably cohesive recreation. However, the film isn't afraid to shatter this facade when needed, introducing a black-and-white, fly-on-the-wall perspective on the events that occurred behind the scenes and between commercial breaks. Reverting to a standard 16:9 fullscreen ratio, this sudden change in perspective propels the viewer away from the illusion of being an audience member and provides a more in-depth look behind the scenes of the show. These inter-spliced interludes feel reminiscent of the 1981 shockumentary The Killing of America, offering a stark and impactful contrast that greatly increases the raw nature of these

Imagine yourself camping in the Pine Barrens. You hear a noise and then see a strange creature lurking in the shadows. Could it be the Jersey Devil? The Legend of the Jersey Devil began in 1735, it was supposedly the thirteenth child of Mrs. Leeds. When she found out she was pregnant with her thirteenth child, she cursed it and said it better be a devil. When it was born, the midwife died of shock and the Devil ate its twelve sibilants, sparing its mother and flew out the chimney (Juliano 1). Another version of the story is that Mrs. Leeds cursed the child after giving birth to it, she then locked it in the attic for years. It then transformed into the beast it is today and escaped into the woods (Russell 1). The Jersey Devil is only a myth to some and a horrific reality to others. Thousands of people have seen the Devil and been harassed by it throughout the years. There are many similarities in these sightings. Many of the witnesses say it has a long neck, a tail, wings, and hooves. There has also been vicious attacks on animals. Several accounts have reported mutilated pets and livestock. The legend of the Jersey Devil may be true because of the sightings, descriptions, and attacks.
Both works, The Night Circus and “The Devil and Tom Walker”, feature prominent gothic elements of the supernatural, either in the guise of magic, or through the apparent devil’s work. In The Night Circus, many patrons of the event, such as Bailey, found it to be magical and supernatural, as “The circus arrives… when yesterday it was not” (Morgenstern 3). Even shocking some, such as Bailey, to be “So shocked by the sight of the black-and-white striped tents in the field that he nearly falls out of the

... the devil, with his partner, Ellie, as the devil's advocate. His voice changes from one time to the next as expressed by Oates, as she states, "He had the voice of the man on the radio. It was the same voice, Connie thought" (671). Later in the paragraph, Oates states, "'Maybe you better step out here,' he said, and this last was in a different voice (671)."
Written during the American Romanticism period, “The Devil and Tom Walker,” by William Irving, personifies the belief in the primacy of imagination. The period of Romanticism in America is often seen as the crucial period of American culture, as it was the central movement of the Renaissance period that moved into a more free-feeling and artistic approach to literature. American Gothic literature made its early appearance with William Irving, first with “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” in 1820, and carrying over to “The Devil and Tom Walker” in 1824, both of which use a macabre approach to establish a moral ending (Matterson). Told by a narrator known as Geoffrey Crayon, “The Devil and Tom Walker” takes on the tone of a legend or tall tale as the story describes the life of a greedy money lender by the name of Tom Walker, who sales his soul to the devil to gain wealth. Irving ultimately uses literary elements such as symbolism and character development, as well as including themes such as greed and hypocrisy to establish a moral to the corrupt man’s tale.
Joyce Carol Oates’ “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” and Flannery O’Connor’s “Good Country People” portray a similar view on Satan. In Oates’ story, the focus is on a young girl of fifteen and her flirtations with sin. The Devil’s reaction to her sins is portrayed through Arnold Friend. O’Connor’s story however, points towards the nihilistic “scientific approach to Nothing” to the downfall of good people and the following of God. She represents this downfall through Manley Pointer. (CS 285) These two characters cause harm to the protagonists, and inadvertently bring them to a moment of grace. The idea of a satanic figure roaming in the realm of reality as a common person has been around for centuries. Oates and O’Connor are able to materialize this idea by hiding their characters behind a façade of false normalcy that attracts the protagonists into their schemes.

Satan seems to come in many form’s throughout the history of mankind; though, In Joyce Carol Oates short story “Where are you going, Where have you been?” Arnold Friend looks to be another transient version of Hells keeper. This story was written in 1966 with a horrifying take on a young girl named Connie who was lead out of her home by a monster who ends up kidnapping her while her family was at a barbeque. This Monster in the story is known as, “Arnold Friend”. He appears at Connie’s home while the family was gone with an accomplice named Ellie Oscar. Mr. Friend is a mysterious; but, creepy figure with intent of pure evil.
