truly brings this story to life, and the reason for much of this movies praise. This movie was absolutely amazing despite a few negatives about the screenplay of the movie. Last of the Mohicans is absolutely amazing and is filled with so many positive connotations. This movie vividly portrays the French and Indian War, showing the perspective of almost every side including, British troops and officers, French troops and officers, British colonists turned militants, Native Americans sided with the French, native Americans sided with British, Females of the time period, and characters ranging from all different economic situation. This depiction of a historical event is kept fresh and modern with the weaving of a romantic plot line and theme of love into the movie. This is shown between Daniel Day-Lewis’s character and Madeleine Stowe’s character Cora Munro. This keeps audiences constantly involved in the movie as their love for each other unfolds and grows. This is not the only sub-plot that keeps the audience intrigued, but also Cora Munro’s relationship with her sister, Alice Munro, as well as Hawkeye’s relationship with his adoptive family, the last remaining Mohicans. These relationships along with many others add a level of an emotional connection with the characters, which adds more suspense in the unraveling of the film. The commitment and connection that the audience achieves with many of the main character’s allows the audience to be swept into the world of Last of the Mohican’s making the Movie truly great. Despite this movies great achievements Last of the Mohicans did have some confusing aspects, which deferred the absorption of everything that occurs throughout the film. This confusion is mainly rooted in the different Native American group’s relationship with the different sides of the war, Britain or France. At the beginning of the movie it was hard to tell the groups apart so the allied relations of each group got confusing. This was really the only down fall of the movie. Last of the Mohicans was truly an amazing movie. The Mission: The mission depicts the journey of two missionary priests in the mid-late 18th century who, find themselves in the southern parts of South America.
They are faced with the conflict between the pope in Rome and powers in Spain and Portugal. Jesuit missionaries spent many years not only baptizing natives but also bringing them into a more European way of life. Spanish and Portuguese settlements were not in favor of the missionaries because they were unable to enslave locals due to the fact the missionaries protected them. This creates trouble when Spanish and Portuguese take over this land, which causes a power struggle between the missionaries and the new groups of …show more content…
colonists. This movie is packed with emotion and visits the theme of the beauty of nature and the human sacrifice. These themes bring up the point of how ruthless humans can be but also the nutriment they poses. This theme allows the audience to grow a connection with the characters and film because it is a theme that comes up in life today. This movie shows not only a historical event but also fosters a deep connection that the viewer can obtain with the film. Despite this movies star studded cast including Jeremy Irons who played father Gabriel, Robert de Niro who played the slaver and mercenary who comes to the mission named Rodrigo Mendoza and Liam Neeson’s character Father Fielding these characters are dry and do not have a true sense of identity. Neeson and Irons have preset tones of how their characters should act. This is sustained throughout the film rather then having their character develop and change throughout the film. Also at a few points in the movie it is hard to pick up on some of the characters emotions, which confuses some of the plot of the movie. This movie is not the best but is definitely worth watching. Mary Silliman’s War: Mary Silliman’s is film based on the true story of Mary Silliman’s life as revealed in her diary.
The story takes place in the 1770s during the beginning of the revolutionary war. Mary Silliman lives with her husband and two sons in a small estate in Fairfield, Connecticut. During the war her family is uprooted when her husband is taken hostage by a group of Tories, due to a rise in tension between two political parties: those who are still loyal to the British crown and those who would like to become independent. Throughout this time we witness Mary’s struggle with the absence of her husband. This movie is great because it not only is it very historically accurate, but it also tells the story from the rare standpoint of a strong female
character. This movies exceptional true story show through the view point of a women makes this movie unlike other movies that take place during the revolutionary war. This gives a unique perspective into the lives of women during this time period. Many movies that depict the revolutionary war only show the viewpoint of male characters during battle. Whereas this movie shows how females too had to make sacrifices and change their lives for the war at hand. Also this movie is very historical accurate, so the insight that this movie gives the reader is mainly correct. Despite all of these highlight that make Mary Silliman’s war a fantastic movies there are some negative aspects. One adverse aspect was the scenes were very choppy and did not flow together well. Also some of the dialogue is cheesy which can take the viewer out of the world of the movie. Despite these few flaws, the juxtaposition of her personal struggles alongside the overall depiction of the revolutionary war creates a riveting plot line that is portrayed though emotional and suspenseful acting creating an educational and intriguing movie.
This book is considered an American Classic due to its longevity in popular literature. It also provides the important historical background on the Catholic Church and its impact on the American Southwest. Willa emphasizes, through her writings, the hardships of the people involved in making this part of America what it is today. It points out the influence of the earliest Spanish missionaries of the 16th century through the latter part of the 19th century involving French missionaries and exposes the corruptness as well as the dedication of the missionaries of the church. The book’s main setting is in the 19th century, during the settlement of New Mexico and Colorado and recalls the journeys that a priest undertook and the hardships overcame in order to meet his and the churches goal of bringing the Catholic faith to Mexicans and native Indians. Through his travels and the spiritual work in the beautiful, yet rough environment he was radically transformed. He was especially influenced by the experiences of the westward movement of the agricultural frontier because of the impact of the native people.
The four Indians, Lone Ranger, Ishmael, Robinson Crusoe, and Hawkeye, are based off icons of the white people in the colonial era. These pieces of literature have an underlying tone of imperialism (Maithreyi 3). By trying to fix the world they try and revere the effects in which colonization had on the Blackfoot people. They begin this by changing the ending of the popular western hollywood movie. The movie portrays a stereotypical view of the indigenous culture. King hopes to dispel the ideas of these stereotypes and does so by changing the movies. Alberta is introduced by teaching her students about the history of Fort Marion. The four Indians are imprisoned in Fort Marion, but unlike history, they escape (Gomez-Vega 13). The 4 Indians try to fix the effects of colonialism on Lionel. ““By the time Lionel was six, he knew what he wanted to be. John Wayne. Not the actor, but the character,” who was the idealized westernized man (King 241). This presence of western ideas in Lionel left no room for a Native future. The 4 Indians set out to revise these ideas in Lionel. As Lionel accepts his culture, he stand up again George Morningstar at the Sun Dance to protect his culture, resembling and revising history (Totter 13-14). In addition to trying to fix the world, the 4 Indians narrate the creation stories. To the Indians, how the creation stories are important. In the novel the 4 Indians
Finally, when it came down to the types of ceremonies and views both civilizations had, they were on two different pages. The Natives believed happiness was the key to good fortune. So, in order to get that fortune, they’d do sacrifices, and rituals to please the “mighty ones”. Then, as stated in the book “A History of Latin America”, it says, “Jews publicly converted to Christianity to avoid the torture…”, In which, this showed how religion and the spiritual views were forced upon people in the Spanish civilization.

The Roman Catholics were one of the first Europeans to disembark in the New World. In addition, there were the Spanish Catholics. There were two missionary efforts of the Spanish that attempted to convert the Native Americans to Christianity. One of their attempts revolved around the priests and their ability to spread the faith. This attempt did not work for several years, until finally, in 1595, the Franciscans were able to progress with their plans. Furthermore, another attempt was when the Spanish used force to enforce their Christian belief. They were outnumbered by the Indians and therefore brought weaponry and soldiers to keep them at bay. Their reason behind the missionary efforts was that they were ordered to spread Christianity to the Native Americans by a holy spirit.
Although it may not have seemed fairly difficult in theory, The Pope along with the Crown of Spain set out with the goal to convert the Native Americans. One decisive factor that challenged that decree of conversion was the economic benefits that Spain would receive. This would eventually change the agendas of Spain, and ultimately it would indirectly make those living in the New World choose: Spain or Religion? This was not said in these exact words, but people, especially religious orders would have to choose to fight for what they believed in, or to follow the orders straight from the Spanish Crown.
Portrayal of Native Americans in Last of the Mohicans and Stereotypes of Native Americans Introduction James Fenimore Cooper wrote the novel Last of the Mohicans. James Fenimore Cooper had a remarkably boring, wealthy existence. His parents were shrewd and ambitious, easily acquiring money and power. Thus he was exposed early on to the finer pleasures of life. The Last of the Mohicans takes place in the midst of the French-Indian war. Specifically, it focuses on one battle in a war that lasted for many years. This was the last and most important conflict over French and British possessions in North America. Unlike the earlier wars, which began in Europe and spread to America, this struggle broke out solely in America in 1754, and was not settled until 1763. For this reason, Indian involvement in the conflict was incredibly high. This book depicts the battle of Fort William Henry and adds the fictional kidnapping of two white pioneering sisters (whites were often kidnapped by Native Americans in Cooper's novels). Cooper knew few Indians, so he drew on a Moravian missionary's account of two opposing tribes; the Delawares and the "Mingos." Although this characterization was filled with inaccuracies, the dual image of the opposing tribes allowed Cooper to create a lasting image of the Indian that became a part of the American consciousness for almost two centuries. This book was actually made into a movie in 1992, and did very well at the box office. Of all of Coopers books, this is by far the most famous. Cooper here tells the story of the stolid colonial scout Hawkeye, who, with his two Indian companions Chingachgook and his son Uncas, stumble on a party of British soldiers conducting two fair maidens to their father, the command...

Apart of his “Leather Stockings” series, “The Last of The Mohicans,” uses the American frontier an aesthetic articulation of male Identity. (“Masculine Heroes” American Passages Voices and Visions) In an excerpt from Cooper’s classic, “From Volume I Chapter III”, (Cooper. 485-491) the reader is introduced to the recurring character Natty Bumppo – referred to as Hawkeye-- and his friend Chingachgook. Both men can be seen as representations of the American Frontier, Heroes that embody the mythic elements in Cooper’s setting. They are rugged frontiersmen that thrive self-sufficiently, in a world of harsh realities.

All through the history of the world there have been superior civilizations that have taken over other groups and have forced them in to situations that would seem unimaginable to the most people today. The same situation once happened to the native people that live in what today is considered the south west of the United States. In 1550 Francisco Vásquez de Coronado led a Spanish conquest in the Rio Grande valley the area that a number of pueblo people made this area there home and sacred lands. With Coronado eading the way the gate was opened to the rest of the Spaniard who were looking for their share of fame and riches. With the Spaniard in search for God, Gold and Glory they quickly realized that there was no Gold or Glory in the South west and the viceroy in Mexico quickly came to the conclusion to withdraw and give more of there attention to the other more lucrative areas of there empire. But there seemed to be one small probel the God part of the god, gold and glory, the Franciscans that came up with Oñates objected to the idea of leaving. The Franciscan view it as their duty to convert the natives who in their eyes where living in sin and would go to hell if the friars would not intervene and show them the way to salvation.
In earlier years of conquest the colonial church was still intact by the time the country was now New Spain. The church organization had by then created two distinct branches- secular and regular clergy. This would then spread around the word of Christianity to save souls. By assimilating this spread to the population of “Indians” they would then get acculturated into thinking their way of living was evil and to abandon their beliefs and to always “praise the lord”. They were brutally persecuted and were not allowed to practise their religion, because they said that the beliefs taught by the Anglican church were against the Bible. When they arrived in the New World, they were confronted with numerous threats from the outside. Their trying to take land away from the Indians caused many fights and attacks. Moreover, they had to deal with the total wilderness surrounding them. Under these frontier conditions, they needed harmony and peace inside the community in order to survive.
The first Catholic priests came to South America with the conquistadors and through social and political force superimposed 16th century Catholicism upon conquered peoples and in subsequent generations upon slaves arriving in the New World. Catholicism has, likewise, frequently absorbed, rather than confronted, popular folk religious beliefs. The resulting religion is often overtly Catholic but covertly pagan. Behind the Catholic facade, the foundations and building structure reflect varying folk religious traditions. (2)
