Bird did a good job of his speech, sprinkling humor throughout the speech. He got the crowd’s attention with a short joke about the length of Bill Walton’s speech and a humorous anecdote about him on the team plane as a rookie. The crowd seemed to enjoy both jokes. Bird didn’t make use of any formal purpose statements outside of short comments, noting how he was going to talk about his rookie experience or tell a story about his high school career. Lastly, he had a good zinger at the end about his coaching career and how the Indiana Pacers owner “bit the bait” and Bird was back in Indiana once again. As for the content and material throughout the speech, it all proved effective for the speech. Pretty much every point Bird brought up was a relevant anecdote from his career or a humorous anecdote that the audience enjoyed. All these points transitioned between each other well and felt natural and relevant within the
The speech I chose was Cal Ripken Jr.’s it was given at the Orioles home ball park, Camden Yards at his last home game before retiring. It is a special occasion speech and was given in front of over 48,000 fans. He used a tried and true opening sentence that although a little altered had a very familiar ring. He opened with “As a kid, I had this dream” a very loose but familiar take on MLK’s “I have a dream”. This was a great attention getter and probably had people on their feet immediately. This audience was already motivate to hear his speech so that was not an issue. Most of the fans were there for the purpose of hearing his retirement speech. He did not preview his points in the introduction he addressed those in the body of his speech one at a time. He did not try to establish credibility as he was speaking about himself so who knows more about him than himself.

Fred Hatch was an American agricultural inventor. It's hard to picture the farmscape without a silo or some type of farmyard, an old run down barn and especially a tower silo. When you think of barns you also should think of silos. The towering, vertical silos we imagine today, especially here located in the Midwest, are a true American innovation and go hand in hand with barns. Farm grain wasn't always stored in silos; it was stored in pits where farmers had to dig out which caused excess spoil in many instances. In 1873, silos were nonexistent.

People come to being on the road for countless reasons and though there is no real certainty on the road, there are two things that are certain, the road stands in opposition to home and your race and ethnicity plays a major role on the trajectory and the way others treat you on the journey. African Americans have an especially strong connection to road narratives. This is because, from the beginning, the race’s presence in America was brought by forcing them on to the road against their will. It is for this reason that there are countless narratives, fictional and non-fictional, of black peoples on the road. For Birdie Lee, a literary character, the beginning of the road marks the end of her comfortable home life and the beginning of her racial
Overall, The speech was very well presented and had a decent balance of humor within it. There was a nice touch towards the end where he sincerely thanked people who had gotten him to where he is today. Whenever you receive an award it is always good to give credit where it is due as this can help you gain more respect from your audience. Speaking in to a group this large while on television is not something that everyone can do and I feel that Will Ferrell did a good job in demonstrating the message in which he wanted to get
Everybody in Detroit called him “The Man” because he always was a leader and the to-go person in any tough moment of the game. Some people called him “The Gentleman” because he was a genuinely nice person with respect for the game and for others. Joe Dumars, a member of the legendary 1989-1990 Detroit Pistons team, once declared “He is the best player I’ve seen coming into the league for years”. Road to history was wide open for Grant, but luck had some other plans for his career. This is the story of Grant Hill, a story about having faith, patience and love for the game of basketball.

Since Birdie deeply cares about what her crush, Nicholas, thinks of her, she is easily swayed by his opinions. As the novel progresses, the pair gradually grows out of their platonic relationship into a romantic one. When Birdie really starts to fall for him, she is taken back by one of his racist remarks. “Shit, maybe you could be colored in the right light. Better stay out of the sun”(204). This was one of the first instances Birdie realizes that her black identity is something she is ashamed of, therefore sending her deeper into her “Jesse Goldman.” One of Birdie’s best friends, Mona, also pushes her farther down the path of hiding her true identity.
He used one question at the beginning of the speech that would catch the audiences curiosity; "Why do musicians give so much time to charitable causes?" and branched out from there to important issues. I think this showed a sense of organization and importance to the issue of why he was there.
