In Marianne Mithun and Wallace L. Chafe’s article “Recapturing the Mohawk Language”, the two authors focus on an important aspect of language that I strongly agree on. Mithun and Chafe demonstrate how native Mohawk speakers acquire unconsciously all necessary rules of the Mohawk language. I find that their discovery can be used as an argument to prove professor Ray Jackendoff’s first fundamental rule: mental grammar.
Ebonics is not the only language of the African diaspora that preserved its Africanity. In addition to several African influenced creoles, the Gullah language of the Sea Islands is reflective of African spirituality and philosophy. The Gullah language developed among enslaved Africans along the coasts of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, as well as the Sea Islands (Turner, 1). This region can be referred to as the Coast. In the early 18th century slaves from the West Indies, where resistance had grown common, as well as rebellious slaves from various colonies were being sent to the Coast. Taxes were placed upon these imported slaves because they were thought to have the ability of corrupting the slave system on the coast. Thus, slave
North America used the 26 alphabets that make different sounds together. On the other side, Geez, which is the alphabet used in Ethiopia has 37 alphabets, each having 5 more letter that has different sounds that correspond to them. The Ethiopian Ge'ez alphabet is one of the reasons Ethiopia is a wide known country all around the world. It has made Ethiopia the first to have its own letter to write in. When we contrast the way the English Alphabet and Ge'ez are read, Ge'ez compresses two letters that make a sound into one letter, making words shorter.
98.8% of the population is made up of ethnic Somalis (Kraus). Other minority groups include Arabs, Indians, Italians, and Pakistanis. Most Somalis are nomadic or semi nomadic herders of livestock. The rest are either crop farmers or inhabitants of the few urban centers. The official languages of the country are Somali and Arabic and the state religion is Islam (“Somalian People”).
Language and culture are inseparable; with language suffering variations as the culture varies or changes. Political, economic and geographical conditions will determine cultural characteristics that will result in language variation.
Still, there are many other writing systems of numerous lost civilizations that have yet to be deciphered. Until then, we can only make well thought inferences, and educated guesses until the next Rosetta Stone is unearthed. Works Cited 1. What is the difference between a. and a. Budge, Sir E. A. Wallis. There are many oversimplifications and stereotypes, even if they may be from a reality-based ideology. The ethnic group of the Hazara and the Pashtun is not entirely developed. Amir was always referred to as a Pashtun but the background of the Pashtun isn't fully touched upon. The narrator only focuses on the Mongolian-like physical features of the Hazara's, and because of this diversity, they are considered a more lowly class than Pashtuns.
The language of my culture is English. Many speak other languages and are respected for taking the time to do so. This culture originated in Europe and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. There are many different cultures represented in my culture, but we are generally white an...
In the articles, "What's it like o be a kid in the White House? Kids have a lot of ideas" by Caitlin Gibson, and "Is it tough being a kid, Try being a president's kid" by Darlene Superville, describes what happens in the first kid's life in the White House. The first mentioned goes into more detail of what kids outside the White House think what happens, and then the reality is explained. However, the other gives only reality and how much stress and embarrassment of the publicity the first kids have to go though. This is why I believe that "Is it tough being a kid, try being a president's kid" is most accurate in describing the first kid's, or Barron's new life. An example of one of his problems can be illustrated in the text when it states, "Ten-year-old Barron was the target of a poorly received joke tweeted by a 'Saturday Night Live' writer on Jan. 20 as the new first family reveled in Inauguration Day events"(Superville, 1).
1. INTRODUCTION. Hasawi is a variety of Arabic whose roots refer to the family of Central Semitic Languages such as Hebrew and Aramaic. The Hasawi dialect is spoken in the eastern part of Saudi Arabia, exactly in Al-Ahsa (Al-Hasaa) province. Therefore, the dialect of Al-Ahsa, or Hasawi (HD), is also known as the Eastern Arabian dialect. In fact, it is considered the dominant dialect in the area although there are other local dialects found in the same area, such as Badawi which is spoken by some Bedouins tribes. In 2009, the number of Hasawi speakers was estimated as 200,000 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ('Arabic, Gulf Spoken, Ethnologu', 2009).
There are so many different views point of the Indus civilization script that is still going on today. This debate about the language started when scientist and linguistics try to decipher the symbols they found on items like pottery when try to understand the people and the civilization. Through the research and experiments we know that the people in the Indus civilization write from right to left and the symbols are mostly pictures to represent a word or meaning. Some scientists and linguistics thought that it was just signs that had nothing to do with the with the Indus people way of communication, while other thought it was a non-linguistics way of how the people in the Indus society communicated.
Sikhs devote much of their time praying to God and studying his word; more than the modern Christian does. Sikhs are also very involved with the Thai and Indian culture. They embrace the traditional food and drinks of their native countries. Sikhs often take part in traditional knife dancing and musical performances as well. Being around this different way of life eventually led me to getting involved with the religion. I would attend prayer services, learn traditional Indian and Thai music, and eat the cuisine.
