What an inspirational video; allowing these young people to go from living in the worst of conditions to seeing the beauty in a pile of trash. By taking cans, wood, utensils, buttons, bottle caps, etc., and with imagination and creativity, they learned how to build a musical instrument, play the instruments, and hear the beautiful music that resonates from each one. Not only does the creation of the instruments help the children, but it also gives Maestro Szaran and Mr. Chavez the chance to show their love of music to the boys and girls, and gives Cola the opportunity to take trash and turn it into something that gives so much pleasure to others. Regarding the 4C’s, the children’s creativity not only came from learning how the instruments were made from trash, but it came from their abilities to create, together, the beautiful music they played with the instruments. Mr. Szaran said it best in the video, “Despite living under dire circumstances, if a person has initiative and is creative, even trash can become an educational tool that could change someone’s life and the lives of others” (Szaran, 2012). Moreover, to think creatively, work creatively with others, and implement innovations, are all skills that prepare individuals (children in this case), for the future (p21.org, 2007). The communication and collaboration the children learned happened through the music they played; by Mr. Chavez teaching them how to play the instruments, and each child communicating and collaborating with each other to form their musical group. I had learned lots of new things this year and especially this semester in U.S. History Since 1877. This history course required all students to complete twenty hours of service learning or to write a term paper. After considering the two options, I decided to give the service learning a chance because I thought it would be an interesting experience. There were a variety of projects to choose from, but I felt that the Sustainability Project was the right fit for me.
George Helmholtz, as the head of the music department at Lincoln High School, is very determined with his regular students and the gifted musicians of the band. Each semester and year at school he dreams of “leading as fine a band as there was on the face of the earth. And each year it came true”. At my school, I am an active member of a program called S.E.E.D., which stands for Students Ending Environmental Destruction. As a group, spread awareness about recycling, water conservation and remediation, climate change, and other environmental problems the world faces today. We make sure that every classroom has a recycling bin and informative posters above them. We have hosted movie nights where we provide healthy, GMO-free refreshments and show an educational film that relates to a current issues to spread awareness. We have also convinced our school to install stations that are specifically meant to refill water bottles as it encourages students to stop buying plastic bottles and wasting plastic. Taking care of the environment and educating our youth, the congressmen, women, and voters of tomorrow who will be the deciding factors of the earth’s health, and consequently the people’s health, is crucial to me.
As a part of the youth engagement plan they chose over 500 students from 25 Canadian high schools to investigate and research on the impacts of climate change in different communities. Their presentations focused mainly on three topics, greening our energy supply, accelerating sustainable transportation and reducing waste.
The teaching project was to developed to educated adolescence about the rising obesity rates and the health issues that can arise. I needed to gather material about the subject matter that I knew they needed to be aware of. The information had to be formatted so that the teaching was understood to ensure that effective teaching took place. Then, I incorporated some learning interactive activities so that the information was retained and so that it kept their interest. One of the interactive activities was the most effective intervention that empowered the group to change their behavior. The activity involved guessing which foods belonged to the different food groups and guessing the calories they thought it contained in them. All the participants were very eager to answer the questions and when some of the questions they answered were wrong, they were interested in understanding why. I felt that effective learning was taking place.

Though extremely grateful for all of the privilege in my life, it was difficult to realize my fortune until working with the teens at RYP who often do not have two parents, have limited adult influences, and live below the poverty line, making education an afterthought. From the perspective of a tutor and mentor, the educational support that the teens require is unquestionable, just like the injustices they face daily. Through service, not only does one gain perspective into the needs of the local community, but also insight into systemic issues of racism, poverty, crime, education and more. By participating in service and trying to counteract the sources of need for others, one will undoubtedly change their perspective of the framework question, knowing that the very least one should help others.
The sustainability of the project is based on the material’s durability. Today I will be discussing the Rebel Music video and how the it affects the individuals in the video. They are presenting an uprising of a new generation that is helping the Native American community turn in a positive direction by using music in different ways. Notable artists, such as Inez Jasper, Mike “Witko” Cliff, Frank Waln and Nataani Means are at the forefront of this new 7th generation movement of music.
I would love to organize a fundraiser that helps children who can’t afford musical instruments do so. Learning an instrument was one of the best things that ever happened to me because it allowed me to use my brain in new ways and to express myself. Music is one of the few things that connects people from all over the world. You can travel to a new country, not speak a word of the language, and still find camaraderie and respect through music: it’s a universal language of unity. It has the unique, unusual, and drastically underappreciated ability to promote peace and fellowship. Yet there are so many young people who can’t afford to pay for an instrument or lessons, and so they miss out on the opportunity to learn and appreciate music in new ways. By helping them do so, I believe that their lives can change and they in turn might change lives.
One of my personal goals for the project was to learn as much as I could about the sustainability issue facing us. I did this by participating in all of the projects that were done throughout the semester. The main project that occurred during the semester was the personal sustainability goals that we each set for ourselves. While doing the actions that we pledged to do, we learned different things about sustainability that we never knew before. One of the things that I learned was that, at Clemson, it is hard for students who want to recycle to be able to recycle. There are not the necessary facilities nearby our student housing to place our recyclables. I also learned that some actions that should be done to be sustainable are hard to do in the society that we live in. One of these activities that we do is the needless driving that Americans do in general. Since we live in a moving society, it is sometimes hard to do. An easy thing that everyone can do is to recycle some of his or her wastes. This can be done for most people at little or no extra effort than just throwing your trash away.
Since August of 2015, I, along with 47 other seniors, had an opportunity to participate in a year long project before graduation called The Senior Project. Initially, I did not know whether this project would be a beneficial experience for me. Also, I did not know if I would learn something that I never knew before. The Senior Project was a challenging activity that allowed me to use my academic skills to research a complex issue and find effective solutions. Not only was this project a great experience, but I learned something new that has change my perspective of the world and international issues. Through this experience, I became a more effective scholar, researcher, and person through the various assignments and activities.
On the first day of class, the Health Sciences class was assigned a service learning project which included a significant number of hours to be completed within the span of the entire semester. There are countless locations where one can choose to perform their service learning hours, more preferably in the field of the class this project is being done for as well as the field one is pursuing their education in. I chose to complete my service hours at a familiar community which consisted of a daycare along with an elementary school which consisted of five kids ranging from ages six months to four years old as well as a second grade class which was made of twenty five students. Before putting in service learning hours, I arranged some destinations and objectives for myself to achieve throughout the educational experience.

I had been looking forward to this observation all semester I was finally going to experience, a 2nd grade class, the grade I hope to teach one day. As I walked into Erin Arias’ classroom the students were finishing breakfast, a little girl who informed me that she was the “Snack Helper” was walking around with a trash can collecting the leftovers. It seemed every child had their own job for the year, which was shown by a piece of fabric on the wall with a pocket for every job, and depending on the magnitude of the job, had one or two tongue depressor with a student’s name in them. Which seemed to be the driving force behind the class, it kept them busy and under-control, most of the time. The class was broken into three tables of six labeled Earth, Sun and Jupiter.
