Not everything is what it seems especially in a relationship.This concept is hammered home in Rodall’s Lamb to The Slaughter. This story is about a wife who kills her husband and covers it up to escape the death penalty. Not everything is what it seems is a theme that is prominent in this story. While everyone thought that they were the perfect couple in reality they had problems and the husband was not happy. The theme of the story is not everything is what it seems because the novel uses this throughout the whole story as a way for the wife to escape punishment. In the beginning of the novel Mrs.Maloney expresses the theme of Not everything is what it seems first hand towards her husband. The wife acts like she is a loving wife towards her husband while in reality she is just as tired of the the relationship as her husband is. This is confirmed after she kills him as she says “ it's a relief that the marriage is over”. This supports my theme as she instead of just telling him that the feeling was mutual she hid it and acted like she did not want the relationship to end. In the story Mrs. Maloney is pregnant with her husbands child. The child symbolizes her resolve to escape the death penalty and is her inspiration to start using deceit as her escape. This is backed up in the story by Mrs.Maloney herself when she said “what about the baby? What were the laws about murderers with unborn children? Did they kill them both mother and child? Did they wait until the baby was born? What did they do? Mary Maloney didn't know and she wasn't prepared to take a chance”.
