"La La Land" is a great film that combines the aspects of plot, believability, theme, and touch with the world in a masterful web, thanks to its witty director Damien Chazelle. The way the acting was done in the movie, one can easily be pleased with the movie by just having the plot acted out, without any music. The movie is an inspiring one for young people especially, who may be struggling to get their careers off to a running start. It inspires them to pursue their dreams in life, even if it means giving up loving someone. While this may seem harsh on some, it is something that is necessary in today's world for a successful career. The story in the film "La La Land" was compelling in that it touched upon the common human experience in life of failing multiple times at something before succeeding in making it a dream come true. Ryan Gosling starred as Sebastian, while Emma Stone starred as Mia. Sebastian was trying to get his own jazz club established, while Mia was aspiring to settle down in life as an actress. This story was believable, because it is natural for humans in their early adult years to struggle before getting into a good position jobwise and financially. …show more content…
In the beginning, the pace of the film was quite fast-paced with lively music and actors dancing animatedly, but gradually, the pace slowed towards the middle and ended just right with the plot advancing and then coming to a halt.
Not to mention, the ending was satisfying, due to the careers Sebastian and Mia successfully made inroads into, with Sebastian opening a jazz music club of his own and being successful early on, and with Mia having finally become an actress in a filming industry based in Paris, following years of auditioning. However, their career success stories came at a price: their love for each other was not allowed to
continue. The film is really good at grabbing and keeping the viewer's attention. That is to say, the events in the film are coordinated so that one must keep guessing as to what will happen next. The film is a thought-provoking musical drama that draws people of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures to it, with lively music, fanfare, and characters. It dawned on me, upon seeing the movie, that many young aspiring musicians and actors/actresses must go through numerous struggles before meeting the initial professional expectations of the music/film industries and making a career out of their respective industry. The film connected me back to my faith, restressing the notion that nothing comes easy in life; one must keep trying their best and have faith that God will bring them out unscathed through hardships. I would give this film a positive review of ninety percent.
Napoleon Dynamite is one of the best movies portraying loneliness and nerds. It is the story of Napoleon in high school and his lonely adventures. All the main characters feel separated, misunderstood, and have nobody to relate to. Napoleon has no friends and lives in his own fantasy land. He is avoided by everybody. His brother seems to be mislead, wanting to be a cage fighter but staying home all the time hopelessly trying to find love and attention on the internet. Their grandmother is never there for them, though she lives her own life right beside them. They live next to a huge field, reinforcing their isolation. Practically every home in the film is
The film Friday Night Lights, directed by Peter Berg explains a story about a small town in Odessa, Texas that is obsessed to their high school football team (Permian Panthers) to the point where it’s strange. Boobie Miles (Derek Luke) is an cocky, star tailback who tore his ACL in the first game of the season and everyone in the town just became hopeless cause their star isn’t playing for a long time. The townspeople have to now rely on the new coach Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton), to motivate the other team members to be able to respect, step up their game, and improve quickly. During this process, racism has made it harder to have a success and be happy and the team has to overcome them as a family.
Friday Night Lights by H.G. Bissinger is a story about a football town. The name of the town is Odessa. It is a small town on the west side of Texas and football is the only thing that matters. Bissinger gives the reader a glimpse of what life is like at an area high school called Permian. Very few towns are obsessed with sports like Permian and Ringgold when it comes to sports programs. In this essay, Permian and Ringgold sports will be compared by their programs and values that they place on sports.
Spike Lee is a filmmaker who has generated numerous controversial films that unapologetically bring delicate social issuest o the media forefront. He honestly portrays life's societal obstacles. He challenges the public to cogitate on the world's glitches and disunion. Spike Lee created a name for himself with films such as Do the Right Thing (1989) and Malcolm X (1992), and with documentaries such as 4 Little Girls (1997) and When the Levees Broke (2006). Lee’s goal was to portray African Americans in a more accurate light. Even today Lee still produces films that directly address modern society's most significant historical movements and episodes. His productions analyze themes of race and discrimination. His work can be analyzed in academic studies such as Philosophy, African Studies, and literary concepts. I am interested in Spike Lee because his craft and career choice is somewhat similar to my future career endeavors. He not only exalted his skills to produce films but he broke barriers of stereotypical Hollywood movies. His works address issues in society such as political, racial, and environmental influences on African American culture. Given that society has evolved into a technology dependent culture; using this talent to visibly shed light to these concerns is an ability I hope to obtain one day.
Sankofa filmed and directed by Hallie Gerima in 1993 explores the past in which African Americans were brought over as slaves and what they endured while there. In the movie, the main character Mona who is also portrayed as Shola, goes to Ghana for a photoshoot where she encounters the “village protector” Sankofa. Sankofa sees Mona and notices she is very first worldly, she’s wearing makeup and a blonde wig. While noting that she has lost her roots he approaches her to remind her to remember where she came from. Soon after she is jolted into a spiritual time travel back to the past where she experiences the life of those who lived in Ghana at the time of slavery. Mona who then takes on the role of Shola is taken though the experiences of traveling to the states, being branded, and mistreated by the master. Once at the plantation she takes us on a journey through the life of the individuals on the plantation as well as well as her own.
La Salle La Salle, René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de (1643-1687), French explorer in North America, who navigated the length of the Mississippi River and claimed the Louisiana region for France. La Salle was born on November 22, 1643, in Rouen, France, and educated by the Jesuits. In 1666 he immigrated to Canada, was granted land on the St. Lawrence River, and became a trader. From 1669 to 1670 he explored the region south of Lakes Ontario and Erie, and he later claimed to have discovered the Ohio River in 1671. In the course of his explorations in the wilderness, La Salle became familiar with indigenous languages and traditions.
There are a few examples that support this theme, mostly dealing with Mia. At the very beginning of the film, Mia finds herself stuck in a traffic jam just like at the end of the movie. However, at the end of the movie is when Mia is famous. Unlike her being the driver like she was in the first traffic jam, Mia is in the passenger seat while her husband is driving. While stuck in traffic with her husband, they happen to be right next to an exit, giving Mia the idea to take the exit just so they do not have to sit through the time consuming traffic when they could be doing something more enjoyable. This almost seems that because Mia is a now big time actress, she has an easy getaway to solve simple problems like this in her life, whereas before she did not. There is also circularity shown at the coffee shop that Mia worked at in the beginning of the film. When Mia worked at the coffee shop, celebrities were stopping by all the time. While working, a celebrity in a red dress comes in and when Mia’s boss tells the celebrity “it’s on us”, the celebrity replies with “Oh no thank you, I insist” (La La Land). Mia is astounded by the women as if she was someone that Mia looked to as inspiration. Furthermore, five years later when Mia is in fact a celebrity, it shown how she walks into the same coffee shop that she used to work at, with employees flabbergasted to see her as well as offering her free coffee. Mias reply is simply “Oh no! Thank you” (La La Land), implying that Mia was in fact inspired by the celebrity five years before. Lastly, the last circularity theme example we see take place is how the setting of the movie took place in winter and ended up being winter at the very
Mia and Sebastian are the central characters of La La Land, and are at the root of its justification of it being one of the greatest films of all time. Both characters are flawed in their own distinct, but equally human ways. The chemistry between them comes very naturally, and is authentic to what two real people would experience with
In the year 2017, “La La Land” swept many categories at the Academy awards including best actress, best cinematography, and best director. In addition to its stunning scenery and top of the line acting, “La La Land” won the Academy Award for best original score. After watching the movie, this choice will be obvious due to the incredible melodies intertwined into the plot of this jazz-based movie. “La La Land” follows the lives of Sebastian and Mia, two star-crossed lovers trying to make it in Los Angeles. Mia is an aspiring actor who feels defeated in her dream due to millions of failed auditions while Sebastian is a pianist whose goal is to carry on the magic of jazz with his own jazz bar but is currently hired as a restaurant pianist. The two meet briefly and their fates cross several times before a connection is made and a relationship is
This was because they were easier to make, Low risk of doing badly and had a clear, specific audience, La La Land also followed this, its main genre being musical. La La Land was strongly influenced by the style of not only The Golden Age in general, but many musicals over time since the 1930s. This can be seen from the many scenes in La La land that were based off scenes in other musicals. The opening scene when people are dancing on cars was inspired by a scene from Les demoiselles de Rochefort 1967, Near the beginning when Mia’s housemates are trying to convince her to come out while singing and dancing is similar to scenes in Grease 1978 and West Side Story 1961(Emmanuele, 2017). One Movie La La land, shares many similarities with is Singing in the Rain 1952 as it has a similar story, sharing elements of comedy and drama and an association with acting and movie sets there are multiple scenes based off the 1952 musical including; City lights, carpark dancing scene in the moonlight and around a pole, movie set scenes and the flashback sequence when people are dancing on a big movie set. Some other films that influenced scenes include; Sweet Charity, The Band Wagon, Funny Face, Broadway Melody, Shall we

The importance of music in movies is highly regarded for manipulating the viewer’s emotions and helping them immerse into the story. Music is one of the prime elements in cinema. Without it a movie would feel dull and unexciting. There are three elements in a movie: one is acting, the second is picture, and the third one is music. It is a holy trinity; if incomplete, there would be a lack of sensation and excitement. Both acting and picture can stand independently from one another, but music is the one that makes the movie memorable.
