The Tragedy of Lady Macbeth
What makes a person insane? William Shakespeare uses insanity as the main theme in the play Macbeth. The play is about Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s transition to insanity when their ambition to become royalty takes over them. Lady Macbeth shows her insanity through her narcissism, manipulation, and guilt.
The first sign that proves Lady Macbeth is crazy is that she’s very manipulative. When Macbeth refuses to kill King Duncan, Lady Macbeth states: “When you durst do it, then you were a man” (1.7.49). She’s trying to convince Macbeth that he’s a coward and the only way to become a man is if he kills Duncan. Throughout the play Lady Macbeth only seems to think about herself and lacks any emotions which are both common traits for narcissists. For example when Macbeth starts acting strange at the banquet Lady Macbeth says to the guests, “Sit, worthy friends:- my lord is often thus, And hath been from his youth” (3.4.54-55). This shows how she disregards Macbeth’s feelings and health because of how much she’s enjoying the attention she’s getting as queen. If she wasn’t insane she would have considered Macbeth’s feelings. Another example that proves she’s a narcissist is after Macbeth starts feeling guilty for murdering Duncan, Lady Macbeth says to him “These deeds must not be thought. After these ways. So, it will make us mad” (2.2.33-34). This quote shows that she isn’t thinking of it as murder and that killing Duncan was necessary in order for them to achieve their ambition. Narcissist always justify their actions to not feel guilty about what they’ve done, which is what Lady Macbeth does to convince Macbeth that it was not their fault and should not feel guilty about it.
