In Macbeth, William Shakespeare explores the effects of greed and ambition of those who seek too much power. One character who plays an essential role to this theme is Lady Macbeth. Through analyzing Lady Macbeth’s relationships, actions, and character development throughout the play, one can see the effect that her ambition to fulfill the witches’ prophecy had on her. Lady Macbeth’s relationship with Macbeth can be described as different from the standard gender roles of the times. While the witches plants the thoughts of Duncan’s demise in Macbeth’s mind, Lady Macbeth acts as the driving force to the plan. While Macbeth is hesitant to act upon the witches’ prophecy, Lady Macbeth states:
It is too full o' th' milk of human kindness
To catch the nearest way. Thou wouldst be great,
Art not without ambition, but without
The illness should attend it.

Thus, Lady Macbeth states that she will “pour my spirit in thine ear” and convince him to carry out the plan to kill Duncan. This establishes Lady Macbeth’s dominance in the relationship in a time period in which the typical gender role included the man “ruling” over the wife. It also shows the ambition that Lady Macbeth displays, establishing her role as a strong, independent woman.
Lady Macbeth also shows the strength of her ambition through her apparent lack of guilt over her actions supporting Macbeth. For example, when Macbeth expresses guilt about his actions towards Duncan and Banquo, Lady Macbeth comforts her husband by saying “Things without all remedy. Should be without regard.
