As I open my eyes to the world around me, I am blinded by the misery and the despair of people. I am subjected to seeing the lack of style exhibited. Lianne George’s article “Why Are We Dressing Our Daughters Like This?” (2014) focuses on the societal issue of an increasingly earlier development of young girls. George states that companies facilitate this early development by producing adult like goods for children that push an adult mindset and behaviour. Through the use of various examples George argues that this trend is ill advised and should not be continued.
Since the beginning of time humans have worn clothing that defines their era, race, and personality. From a caveman wearing his favorite mammoth skin to a 1980’s righteous teen wearing her all time favorite bright orange neon retro blazers. Heartbreakingly, at the school of Putnam City North High, fashion has shot down the drain as teens decide to get dress blind folded every morning. As I look around the halls of sweats and dirty over-sized t-shirts, I am bombarded with the embarrassment of having these “fashion senses” be the look of our generation. These undressed, tacky, lazy wear must come to an end before our children look back on the classes of the late 2000’s with expressions of disgust as they wonder what the heck we were thinking.
William Strunk and E.B. White's handbook The Elements of Style, and Joseph Williams's book Style Toward Clarity and Grace, are both full of good tips on how to improve writing style. The Elements of Style has some good information on how to make writing more vigorous and forceful, but it also contains a lot of opinions on word choice that seem frivolous. Although the advice may not be helpful, Strunk and White's strongly worded opinions are part of what makes their book enjoyable to read. Of the two, Williams's book is better at describing how to actually form better sentences and paragraphs. Before reading these books, I was of the opinion that everyone had their own writing style. Strunk, White, and Williams make it apparent however, that there are rules every writer can incorporate into their style to help make their writing more clear and direct. Both books contain helpful guidelines for improving writing style, but as Strunk and White say, "the first piece of advice is this: to achieve style, begin by affecting none (70)."

The practice of improving the beauty of others may seem insignificant to some but for those in process of studying the cosmetology industry take great pride in the work they hope to produce. Hair stylist and nail technicians improve the way people look and feel about oneself to better improve self confidence; cosmetologist strive to do the best they can to achieve the look that their client may be searching for. However, these techniques must be taught thoroughly and without the proper teaching techniques, the upcoming cosmetologist may feel behind and uncertain about their abilities when performing on clients. Without the proper and professional ways of teaching, the student struggle to ever gain success in the business; this business builds only from the repetition of great work and failing to achieve the overall style of the desired look from the client will result in a failing business. The search of finding a successful and up to date school requires more work than one may assume.
Fashion in the 21st century is a big business, as its production employs millions of people and generates billions of dollars in revenue. Clothing is something that defines a person, and allows society to have an outlook on an individual’s lifestyle and beliefs. Unlike criticizing other material things like a car, a home or even something as simple as a television set, criticism of clothing is very personal. This suggests that there is a high correlation between clothing and personal identity and values. (Breward, pg.1) Clothing in a sense has the ability to communicate thought. However, similarly to art interpretations, this does not mean that any two people will perceive these visual aesthetics similarly.

It mostly refers to the current trends in looks and dressing style of a person (Cumming 234). In most cases, fashion is confusedly related to costumes; when a person talks of fashion they are seen to mean fashion in terms of textile. Fashion takes on many different facets and concerns many subsets— a model sashaying down the runway in a gown encrusted in real gems, Lady Gaga’s infamous dress made of cuts of raw beef, a teenage girl obsessing over the season’s latest styles— it is all an expression of our minds and who we are or want to be, made tangible. It is a medium just like any other, for while artists wield brushes and paints, designers use thread and cloth to illustrate their vision. The artistry is none more so apparent than in the exclusive world of haute couture, a world of extravagance that caters to aesthetics, producing one-of-a-kind wearable masterpieces that are made to be admired rather than worn. It is without doubt, high fashion and its design is an art.
Fashion is a controversial issue in society nowadays. We live in a consumerism advanced era in which whether following fashion trends or not has become a debatable point. Many people believe that it is important to follow fashion trends. For example, Lord Chesterfield once said, “If you are not in fashion, you are nobody.” The question is why fashion should be an essential matter of concern to all of us.
